Do you remember the first book you have ever read?
« on: December 27, 2005, 02:25:07 PM »
Just curious, both about memory in this respect and what was the people's first touch with literature. Yes, I mean a "literature book" not a school book. ;)

So, for me it was "the Chronicles of Narnia" by C.S. Lewis (I had an edition with all of them in one book)

My very first book was Dumas' "The Three Musketeers". At the time, I was only six, so I never understood why the Queen's necklace was so important.  :) It felt nice to read about duels and stuff, though.

I taught myself to read before I entered kindergarten. I don't remember the first book I read, though I remember many different stories.

I read Watership Down for the first time in the second grade, which would have made me about 8 years old. That's probably the first "adult" book I read, though I had read novels previously. Tom Sawyer was a favourite.

The first book I remember reading and loving was The Cat in the Hat Comes Back. It was the first book I ever owned - it was a birthday?Christmas present. My father claims I was reading before kindergarten, but Cat in the Hat Comes Back is the first book I remember making me laugh, and want to read it over and over. I particularly liked the fish in the tea-pot.
First chapter books were probably Nancy Drew and Trixie Beldan. My younger sister loved Enid Blyton, but I thought they were very wussy characters. I read them but I didn't like them.  Oh, and the Anne of Green Gables books.
Thank you Melora, for posting here. Now someone will say Oh yes I remember those, rather what?Never heard of them!

I liked Enid Blyton, but it was the stories about kids surviving while stranded on an island, or exposing kidnappers or smugglers that really grabbed me. Not so much about the playing with dolls.

I had a huge thing for "kids on their own" stories, actually. Runaways, orphans, lost children... it was quite a theme in my reading.

Other things I remember liking a lot were the Jack McGurk mystery series (far more mischief-oriented than Encyclopedia Brown), Albert Payson Terhune's dog stories (tear-jerking!), and a series of talking animal political allegories by Ben Lucien Burman, called the Catfish Bend books (they're wonderful, but out of print).

One traumatic reading experience was sampling some of the New Hardy Boys novels, and Irma (can't recall if she was Frank or Joe's girlfriend) was killed by a car bomb. Talk about innocence lost!

Never, ever read "New" anything books. Everything you liked about the old books will be gone. I remember being particularly upset by "Return to Flambards" by K.M.Peyton. It made better sense rationally, but it was the improbabilities that had made a satisfying book in the first place. All the triumph of the underdog allegories were dumped. I love triumph of the underdog allegories.

I think it was "Mysterious Island" by Jules Verne. After folktales, of course.

oh, yes, Eral, i do remember those.  i really liked the Trixie Beldon books, but i honestly preferred the Hardy Boys to Nancy Drew.  My mom had us in a Classics book club. each month we got two books in one volume, reversed.  it was pretty cool, except when 2 of us tried to read the same books. LOL

My mother preferred single sex literature for us. Although after I read how Nancy chastely shared a double bed with her boyfriend when they were stranded overnight
(I believe I was about 10) I asked my mum questions about the purpose of double beds,("I thought only mums and dads slept in double beds, mum") whereupon all the Nancy books strangely went missing (I couldn't figure out why my older sisters were pissed off with me) and after a dull period of only being able to access Enid,
I stumbled across my brother's books. There was a series about three boys who I think were the English version of the Hardy boys- one of them, Julian, had an encyclopaedic knowledge of everything a la Sherlock Holmes, and I greatly admired his superpower-logic. They were the famous Five only older and without any girls, and they travelled by themselves without having to ask permission- which I also admired greatly. They were interesting, but I gradually gravitated back to books with girls as the main characters. Or at least making token appearances.
I read a tremendous amount of crap as a kid.

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, by Dr. Seuss.  And if you tell me that's not literature, I'm going to punch you in the ear.

In the ear? Silly choice of a target. But don't worry, literature it is :)

I think it was either The Black Corsar by Emilio salgary or The Inka Legacy by Karl Mei. I was in first grade and read them almost at the same time, so I have no memmory which I finished first.

I've read worse books than Harry Potter. Take Operation Chaos and its sequel for example - real junk.

Splinter of the Minds eye (A Star Wars book. maybe even the first) takes the cake for a bad book. As for what I read first, umm...The Hobbit is the first novel I can remember reading. Probably Green Eggs and Ham was my first book of any sort tho :o

I read a lot of those, too. I didn't like "The Famous Five", but Fatty and his band were sort of sweet.

My first was also a Doctor Seuss book.  It was "Hop on Pop".  The first literature I read was Eyes of the Dragon, by Stephen King.  I was in second grade.  I doubt I really understood most of it.
