I am trapped in some kind of insane time-warp
« on: December 14, 2005, 11:56:34 AM »
One of my bizarro co-workers just told this joke.

A grasshopper goes into a bar, and the bartender looks down and says, "Hi there little fellow,
hey, you may not know it, but we have a drink named after you."
The grasshopper looks up and says, "really! you have a drink named Murry?"

The thing is, she HAS TOLD THIS JOKE AT LEAST TWO TIMES BEFORE. Once on Monday, once last week. Every single time everyone who heard it, except me, laughed as if it were new.

What the hell. Is this normal? Am I trapped in a mysteriously dull time warp? Are my co-workers conspiring to make me think I'm crazy, or do they all have single-day attention spans? Is this just how work is - repetetive down to the smallest detail, not just the big things?

Soon they'll be coming for you too.
Well, there was this doggy. He was a very clever doggy. He said things like...like... "I would feel infinitely more comfortable in your presence if you would agree to treat gravity as a law, rather than one of a number of suggested options."

I'm rolling on the floor right now.  I mean, you could tell me that joke every day an it would never get old.  I think your problem is that you have no sense of humor.
Poor baby. Couldn't find a fight anywhere else so you had to come here, huh. -Cybersquirt

This joke was funny the first time I heard it too, but when you haer the same sh*t 15 times, it kinda gets worn out.

Is this just how work is - repetetive down to the smallest detail, not just the big things?

This one. Or at least that's how my last job felt.

[with feigned joviality]
"Hello, Mr. Bill."
"Hello, Mr. Rick."

"Dennis! How are you?"
"Oh, not too bad for a [pick one of: current day of week OR rainy/windy/cold/summer day]."
[laughter]

Every conversation had a script. There were minor variations, but you could pretty much see them all in the space of a week. And deviation from the script... well, that was always met with bewilderment.

Monday morning script, directed at me:
"So... you had a good weekend." (Always a statement, never a question.)
"My grandfather died."
[uncomfortable silence]

But you see, the problem isn't their repetitive phoniness, it's my bad attitude.

Maybe they know that she's a psycho so they're humouring her in cse she brings in her gun.

The script is there to keep everyone from saying nothing, since eventually there's going to be a time when no one has anything they want to say to anyone else, and people find silence uncomfortable.  That's when the shooting starts.  Better, instead, to fill the void with meaningless drollery like, "Hey, X.  Workin' hard?"  "Nope, hardly workin'."  "Atta boy."
