Question about one of the songs: French Translation
« on: December 02, 2005, 02:31:53 AM »
Hello all!

I'm happy to announce that the French Translation of Keto is almost done! But we're still struggling with some of the... songs!

I know that for all of you, English-speakers, this must be obvious, but could one of you explain to us the meaning of this part ?

@1253 = ~Me father said he'd pay the smart,
And he'd run for a golden guinea,
But the Sergeant swore he kissed the book,
So now they've got young Jimmy.~

Thanks in advance! :)

Basically, it's saying that the girl's father is going to pay the debt (i.e. "the smart") to the soldiers, who are trying to take "young Jimmy" away because he accepted the king's shilling.  (A bit of English history for you all ;) )
The book referred to is the bible, and the guinea is just the currency of the time.

Hope that helps. :)

Personally, I wouldn't have translated the songs, as unless they have an obvious translation (e.g. Les Mis, which was French to start with) they'll lose something in the translation.

Perhaps leaving original English text be, but including French translation in brackets? I think it works best.

I think for something with an historical backdrop that needs to be explained like Alarielle did brackets won't really work. :/ I'd say put it in the readme under erm additional material.

The problem is that Keto will be singing English lines, and French lines will display, which is kinda jarring with songs. So, I'd suggest an explanation in the readme, as you say, but both English and French (or just English) as the dialogue goes.

Nah, many people listening to the music in language knowledge of which they do not posses (e.g. me) read the translation of the lyrics while listening to the original. It's also the way songs in movies are treated (at least here), so don't think English sound + French subtitles are such a bad idea.

Well, as we are used to French subtitles while watching movies in a foreign language, the idea was basically to have the text in French, so that people could understand what it is all about and still listen to the song in English...
But thank you so much for your explanation!

I am still pondering this point in a German translation and have yet to decide what to do with the songs. Not that I have exactly been rushing things up to now. ::)

I could go with old German to match the dated English language, modern German or English and the readme version. I very much like old German, but not unlike old English it quickly seems out of place if not placed within the right context.

The really important part is they're translating Keto, and it's almost done. I'll get to learn the French equivalent of salt-water taffy! Excellent!  :)
