Pub bistros are where people go to drink and have dinner. They are not stylish. They are comfortable and cheap. There are the kind of places that are full of nannas and grandads at lunchtime, and families at dinner-time. The presence of children is acceptable. There are often poker machines downstairs.

So... restaurants?  Although I don't know of any of those that have kids areas, except McDonald's, but that's not really a restaurant.  They don't serve food or alcohol.

They are not restaurants. They are part of the pub. They are an expansion of the great Australian tradition of The Counter Tea at the pub, which were brought in once pubs could be open past 6:00pm. To encourage people to keep on drinking a cheap meal from a simple menu was available. You ordered, paid and were given a number. When your dinner was ready your number was called and you went back to the counter to get it.
A seperate area called the Ladies Lounge that was the women's drinking room was made redundant by changes in the law saying women could enter the bar and drink there. These rooms were made into the Counter Dinner rooms, and were enormously popular. Some pubs did not expand and remained Drinking Pubs. Most pubs with a bistro area still have a Bar devoted to drinking only and no kids. Thus endeth the short history of Australian Pubs.

We are still fighting the good fight against pokies. They can only be in licensed hotels in a seperate area. Some councils wanted legislation to allow them in shopping centres, but it was howled down.

Ahh, good old counter meals. Some of the pubs have totally merged their dining and drinking areas, at least here. During the day you feed, at night, you drink.

Man.  Australia's weird.  I heard that down there, hamburgers eat people.  Can you confirm that?  Judging by the rest of the wildlife down there, I bet they're poisonous, too.  Not that a Big Mac up here isn't poisonous, but they're not paralyze-you-in-five-seconds-and-shut-down-your-lungs-in-twelve poisonous.

I don't think the proletariat was allowed to have junkfood.  Maybe Stalin had some big macs--or maybe a whopper here and there--exported for his own personal stock, but not the masses.

More a railroad. Highways were Adolf's territory.

I think it is hard to think of a time where people just disappear and are held captive without access to any form of judicial process, are subject to torture and abuse without the hope to ever get out again. Thank God we do not live in Stalinist Russia!!

I had not seen this article before. So hard to make head or tail of most reports.   Jester, at least you may console yourself that no EU country or candidate country is involved in this mess or so says the EU, for the moment.

Regullus, there is such a thing as taking the position of Devil's Advocate too far. When the papers here reported on the 14 yr old boy who was taken prisoner and sent to Guantanomo, they didn't mention anything abpout the beach. I'm pretty sure that wasn't selective journlism. Let's not play into the hands of the warmongers.

The only reason civilisation has succeeded here is that Nature is so inimical to Europeans. We have had to develop infrastructure or else die out. We have survived out of sheer bloody-mindedness, much to the regret of the indigenous population.
Please don't try to sidetrack us with questions of hamburgers. As a multicultural society, we certainly include hamburgers on our menu. Right up there with souvlaki, fish and chips, spring rolls and curried everything. After you have visited here and found Thai, Mediteranean, Chinese/Vietnamese, Italian, Indian and Afgan restaurants all in the same street, then we will discuss the inadequacies of Australian culture.

@ PS - I am invoking Godwin's Law.

Does not apply as it clearly states that it has to be used without any reason. While certainly off topic to a degree my mentioning of highways is in no way a reason to take refuge to GL. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_law)
It is in complete accordance to history and bears apart from the connection to Stalin no other relevance whatsoever erm not even to this topic which in itself doesn't quite make the cut in that department.

@article: If there is a club holiday section there too, fine with me. If it is that great, why not let me go there for an extended period of beachcombing, surfing and whatnot? We will see how many governments will finally admit to wrongdoings, if this, hopefully unravels any further. We are loosing this  'war' on terrorism, because our hypocrisy. I am not even happy even if it turns out to be only isolted insidents. I find myself wholeheartedly agreeing with a republican on this, Sen McCain. As it sadly had to be expected most governments will not be very forthcoming when it comes to information about this. They know why.

@Progress: Yeah, baby, yeah.

Hey! My link came from Jester's link. You doubt the Guardian? I found the mention of snorkeling to be quite mesmerizing. No worries, the prisoners are snorkeling.

To Jester: Godwin's Law is not applicable?

More a railroad. Highways were Adolf's territory.

I think it is hard to think of a time where people just disappear and are held captive without access to any form of judicial process, are subject to torture and abuse without the hope to ever get out again. Thank God we do not live in Stalinist Russia!!

You mention Adolf and while there are many benign Adolfs, the populariser of the Christmas tree in North America for an example, I do not believe you were referring to any other Adolf than Hitler.  You also brought up Gulags, if not by name, and your link distinctively compares Gulags to Gitmo. Hence you are guilty by association.  I will grant you that it was Andyr (a moderator) who started this progress to G'sL. I stand by my invocation.

What do you think Stalin did with all of the people he had killed? Food for thought. ;)

I believe he built a highway in Siberia.

You followed up on Stalin and I was tempted to say that highways are highly impractical in permafrost territory. The analogy was neither ad personam nor emotional in any way. It stated a historical fact although I must admit BR's post lends your GL thesis some veracity if you read my response that way.

To clarify what I was trying to say:

I think it is hard to think of a time where people just disappear and are held captive without access to any form of judicial process, are subject to torture and abuse without the hope to ever get out again.

Perhaps a bit too subtle for the foxes out there, but I know you caught the implications as you presented a link to Gulags yet failed to mention any recent events that would come to mind when someone would say that. This forced me to also mention other incidents this phrase would seem applicable.

Thank God we do not live in Stalinist Russia!! This was not meant as a historical statement. *hint, hint* Gandhi once said that, if you wanted to learn about the degree of civilization of a nation, go into their prisons. We should be ashamed of ourselves.

You explanation about the other guy (:P) showed me that you did not mean to claim the analogy for Stalin.
If GL also applies to Stalin, then I humbly apologize and agree that you were right, again, dammit.

IIRC, according to the Big Black Book of Communism, permafrost was indeed the problem and the solution was bones.

I have reached the 350th post with this reply. I had hoped to do something incredibly zippy in my 350th post. I had contemplated writing a riff on an extremely funny leaving forevar post which I cannot link nor can I post because the content is too racy for ppg or write a post entitled "According to Legend or What I learned on IRC?" or even a poll which would have asked "Who Is the Hawtest Person to Grace the World of IE Modding?" But no, as in most recent milestones in my life, this too must pass unmarked, unnoticed and unrepented. I am sure I will get my act together by the 500th post.  :-\ :-[ :'(
