'Progress?' threads
« on: November 14, 2005, 02:21:55 AM »
They are perhaps one of the most annoying things ever.

Discuss.

Edit: Note the question-mark.  'Progress' threads are nifty.  'Progress?' threads are not.

This thread is about 20% done IMO. RL is messing with me, so I can't say how long it'll take to get the other 80% done.

That's why having a forum is not necessarily a good idea, in my book. Nobody bugs you about when your alpha becomes beta, when you're going to get these damn PID ready, and so on.

On the other hand, if there are no "progress", "comments on progress", "split from the comments on progress", "discussion of the comments of progress" "progress?" "release date?" "is this mod dead yet?" "is this mod dead already?!", what the heck are mod forums for, then?

"Progress?" threads suck, especially the ones where GIRLS *fall on floors, clutch pictures of NPC xy and giggle like mad*.
"Show me how you do that trick! The one that makes me scream", she said,
"the one that makes me laugh!" she said and threw her arms around my neck.

I miss "Progress?" threads for my forums (MTP and STH from my sig if you want to do some   :-*)... they make me feel the mod is welcome.
of course, replying "nothing added change since an year ago" isn't the best way to treat people

These people make me uncomfortable. They should be outside learning the social skills they desperately need, not leaving spastic messages on a forum. I guess I feel embarrassed reading their drivel.

I have to disagree strongly. Progress? threads keep the Falling Gigglers activities in a well-defined area that is easily avoidable. Coupled with the strategy of never reading any posts bar those of the mod creators, I hardly ever get bothered now. This is how I would like it to stay. It's sort of like the play area at the pub for the kids. Go in there at your own peril. Would you prefer to have Falling Gigglers hijacking threads all over the place? God forbid.

There's some in larger pubs here.

The landlords tend to take a dim view of you using them when you're drunk, though. But if you can fit down a slide designed for an 8-year-old I reckon it's fair game.

It's very civilised. The kids all go off to the playroom, allegedly with an adult to supervise them, while everybody else gets to eat their meal and have a drink without the usual chorus of "I'm bored", "She hit me","When are we going home?", etc.
I'm sure Canada has some. Pubs with a bistro section. You wouldn't frequent them unless your family has produced a third generation. Some people denounce them as horrible facsimiles of real pubs, for others an easy way to have family dinner. Really, they are a symbol of the egalitarianess of our society - everybody gets to go to the pub.

I normally check only "samples" threads in "mods in progress" forums.  And there are too few of those, especially compared to "progress?" threads.

And pubs and clubs with play area is a truly scary thought.

Clubs are where people go to drink, dance and pick up. They are stylish and chic and up to the minute. Young people only. No middle-aged people or kids.
Pubs are where people go to drink, talk and hear music. They can be up to the minute but generally not stylish or chic. Middle-aged and young people. No kids.
Pub bistros are where people go to drink and have dinner. They are not stylish. They are comfortable and cheap. There are the kind of places that are full of nannas and grandads at lunchtime, and families at dinner-time. The presence of children is acceptable. There are often poker machines downstairs.
