Creature editor?
« on: November 09, 2005, 03:11:33 AM »
Hello,

Which editor do you use to edit creature?

I have:
- Near infinity 1.32
- DCLTEP 6.7f
- IE Creature Maker 3.1.3

DCLTEP seems the most usefull, with nice interface and functions. I use it to create a mod under tutu. The setup wasn't clear, I've just set BG2 chtinin key.
But then, when I use it, it bugs a lot. Just loading the program lead to about 2 errors. When I modifiy spells or click on some button, program crashes.
So, I really can't use it...

IE Creature Maker isn't good to add spells to mage. So I left it.

Near Infinity is good in everything. Quite stable, I only need to relaunch it every 1 hour because it starts lagging a lot (probably some memory allocation errors hehe)
But Near Infinity has some bad problems:
- Some unknown fields in spells editing. When I saw hex data in unknown, I guess someone do have a program which identify the unknown field?
- Very bad interface to set up a spellbook for a mage:
* You have to specify hex offset for each spell level
* One error will definitly screw your .cre file (Just lost 2 hours yesterday)

So is my question : what creature editor is the best?  :)

I prefer using Creature Maker because I like its interface. As Near Infinity is my default tool I sometimes use it for minor changes unless it has got anything to do with spells.

Basically Creature Maker, for minor changes DCLTEP
DCLTEP is definitely superior to all other tools that can (or try to) do the same, but you don't need a lion to fight ants

I've never used DLTCEP beyond checking it out a bit, and Creature Maker seemed very broken when I first tried it.  I would suggest NI, which is obviously biased, and another good one to consider is WeiDU for byte-patching existing creatures.

Creature Maker is a bugged piece of sh!t. I use Shadowkeeper (add items and stuff) with Near Infinity.

I've had it crash on me a few times before when trying to save changes - that was under Win ME. Not sure how it works on other operating systems, since I switched to editing via tp2 and NI instead. :)

It crash too many times with me so I gave up on it and started to use the two things I mentioned above.

I used Creature Maker all evening yesterday and it didn't crash but...
when I opened one of modified file in NI, I discovered it changes one unknow effect (added by walking speed) to default "bonus to AC"

So I had to manually modify all files I edited with CM.
I will try Shadow Keeper now (because for many spells, NI is an horror)

I generally only use Creature Editor for quickly looking at CREs e.g. finding what a particular stat is.  For editing, I stick to NI and WeiDU (for on the fly C_Eing of CREs).
