Baldur's Gate III and Neverwinter Nights II
« on: April 06, 2004, 06:56:56 PM »
An interesting article: http://pc.ign.com/articles/504/504198p1.html

As to its validity, however, I do not know.  Atari certainly isn't one of the well-liked gaming companies at the moment...

I don't think any of the big "mainstream" publishers (EIDOS, EA, Activision, etc) are particularly well-liked right now.

If it was to happen and Bioware was not involved then I would not buy them. They know the series well and any other company would just screw it up.

But BioWare made NWN, so you can hardly say they're a decent developer any more.  Then again, I haven't played either of the expansions, and I hear one of them is good (Hordes of the Underdark, right?  Not the Undrentide one)

I have seen reference on Interplay that they are pitching Obsidian to do BG3, but no confirmation on that either.
If it is screwed up, it is probably my fault!

Meh. BG3 without Bioware, and with no connection to the Bhaalspawn story? Publicity stunt, nothing more. Another BG:DA in waiting.

Hordes of the Underdark wasn't bad, but IMHO Knights of the Old Republic was superb :)

I really don't care who the hell makes it, I'm buying it. If it sucks I'll just trade it in for another game  :)

KoToR is superb. You can finally pull a Darth Vader and choke your enemies or a Emperor Palpatine and zap fry them. Mind Trick is also fun. You can be a complete bastard and convince Zaalbar to kill Mission.

Shadows of Undrentide was ok.  It got better once the plot moved beyond being a replay of the first chapter of the NWN OC.  The ending really sucked though.  Hordes of the Underdark was much better, due in part to the fact that you could have 2 henchmen in your party and they actually interacted with each other. :)  The first chapter was fairly weak though, being mainly a dungeon crawl, but the rest of it was very good and you got some good wrap-up in the epilogues.  KotOR was great, although once again the ending really sucked (well for the light side at least... I'm not sure how the dark side ending went.)

Two great games that I wish I had. NWN was right next to me (no really, it was) but that left along with the other. Then KotOR was in my grasp, but my charisma skills failed me.  :P

Interplay is hated because they killed Black Isle.
EIDOS is hated because they (and Ion Storm) killed Looking Glass Studios.
EA is especially hated because they killed (well, more like assimilated) both Origin Systems and Bullfrog, and are the publishers of that mockery of all that's PC games related, the Sims.
Activions is hated because the company directors allegedly lied in financial statements, which let them to sell company shares at a much higher value than they were really worth.

I thought that one Looking Glass Studios guy went bonkers anyway, according to what I've heard. Thief 3 becoming an action game and such.

And what's wrong with The Sims?

Lionheart is a mockery of PC games. ;_;

The Sims is sort of cute. :D

I want to play Sims 2, I hope it has thrilling action sequences. That are easy to win.

The Sims is a fun diversion, nuthin' wrong with that. Some people think it's too "girly", I guess, because you don't go around blowing things up  ::).

I don't think Interplay's going to exist for much longer, even on paper. And I see no reason that a developer besides Bioware couldn't make a great BGIII. Look at all the wonderful mods, many of which are much better than what Bioware came out with in the first place.

I tap my foot impatiently, waiting for Ziff-Davis's 90-day exclusive to expire on my story about romance-in-gaming which mentions Bioware and the Sims...

Yes. To me, the core of a good BG3 would be an engaging story with developed characters who talk to you, one another, and the world around them in interesting fashion. Bioware has demonstrated skill at this, but, as you mention, there are others who can hack it as well.

(and, right on all counts, may I add.)

I probably would buy BG3, but only if it was run on the same engine, same rules and had party interaction (something sorely missed in IWD).  However, if some abominable fiend has the audacity to bring out NWN2 I will hunt them down and kill them.  NWN was appalling and definately the worst £30 I ever spent
