Crashing in the Underdark
« on: September 12, 2005, 06:15:10 PM »
I'm playing BG2 w/ TOB for about the sixth time and have run into my first game killing bug.

I'm just about ready to emerge from the Underdark, having retrieved the White Dragon's eggs from the House Despana Matron. The game crash happens after I give the eggs to the dragon, specifically after she tries to teleport my party to nearer the surface. A loading screen pops up ... it either lights up about a quarter of the way or not at all depending on if I've cleared out cache/data. I also get a crash if on the main Underdark map I exit on the upper left side, which I think leads to the same general area the Dragon is trying to take me to.

These are things I have done trying to fix this:

  - Deleted everything in cache/data and temp (there's nothing in tempsave).
  - Overwritten the stuff in cd4/data with the original files off cd4.
  - Fresh install of BG2/TOB on another PC, patched up to date, installed all the mods I'm currently using, loaded my last save. Same crash when handing over the eggs/
being teleported or exiting the left side of the map.
  - Reloaded from an earlier save back in Spellhold. Took the portal to Underdark. Ran to the exit on the left side of the map battling the odd Illithid and what not. Same
crash. I did this to exclude any sort of Drow avatar bug (which I've never had in any previous play through, so didn't know what form such would take).

There is no error message that I can report. I get dumped to desktop. Sixty percent of the screen remains black, unpainted, whatever. No amount of waiting results in any sort of message. I have to kill BGMain in task manager. Oh, I'm running Windows XP w/ SP2. The other PC is XP only patched up to SP1.

These are the mods I currently have installed.

  - 1PP-v2
  - Ashes of Embers (selected components)
  - Banter Pack v6
  - BG2TOB Fixpack 112
  - BG2TOB Text Update 12
  - Ease-of-use (selected components)
  - Tactics (selected components)
  - Item Upgrade
  - Cespy Audio v1
  - D0 Tweak v15 (selected components)
  - D0 Quest Pack (selected components)
  - Detectable Spells v1.2.4
  - Scriptable Spells v1.2
  - eSeries v1.2.09
  - gMinion v1.6.5
  - Totemic Cernd v1.3
  - Improved Horn of Valhalla v1.1
  - G3 Tweaks v13 (selected components)
  - G3 Oversight v6 (selected components)
  - Unfinished Business v14 (selected components)
  - Refinements v2.01
  - Virtue v18
  - Item Value Tweaks

I'm not sure about the order. I know I installed 1pp first, then detectable & scriptable spells early on, and eventually banter pack was next-to-last and virtue last. At one point I decided to uninstall "Improved Bodhi" from Tactics mid-game ; this hosed up Cromwell's dialogue such that when I asked him to search through my pack for things to work on I got a whole lot of unrelated dialogue options, so I backed up my save directory and uninstalled / reinstalled everything, in the same order sans Improved Bodhi, and then resumed from my last save with no problem.

I don't know how likely it is that any of my cds are hosed. I looked at cd4 in particular and there are no scratches ; it has rarely left its case. I ran Near Infinity and asked it to check for corrupt ARE files (is that what I'd be looking for? sorry, I don't know any better) and on a couple of files it reported that "data/progtest.bif is missing" but nothing else.

Anyone have any ideas? Does it have something to do with the mods I've installed? Corrupt files? Ought I have started a new game after the Improved Bodhi debacle?

I have no idea what eseries and gminion are, but it could possibly be a compatibility issue. Except for the mods I mentioned, I don't see any mods that deal with the underdark or that would have compatibility issues... hm.

When you installed the mods, did any error messages come up?

If not, then I suggest toying with installing/uninstalling mods, to see what happens.

They're AI scripts for the player and summons, they shouldn't pose any problems.

No, there were no errors, but your common sense suggestion was naturally spot on. I did yet another clean install on my testbed with a relative minimum of mods (1pp, scriptable & detectable spells, ease, the custom scripts, the fixpack, virtue) and there was no crash. Move along folks, nothing to see here.  :-[

eseries and gminion are AI scripts related to monsters, and I know I've played with gminion without any problems, so I doubt those're the problem.

Oh, the bigg already answered that.  Well hey.  Yeah.
