One of the boring points of the story.

Yeah, I start to doze off whenever I get near that part.  LoTR in general is just not on my all-time favorites reading list.  Hell, not really on my any-time favorites list either. :P

One of the boring points of the story.

Along with:
The Party.
The Crossing of the Shire.
Bree.
The Midgewater marshes.
Weathertop.
The run to Rivendell.
Rivendell.
The trip to Caradras.
The crossing of Caradras.
The Mines of Moria.
Lothlorien.
The River Journey.
The breaking of the Fellowship.

And that's just from the first book (well. two books, but I've never seen a 6 volume version of LOTR). Tolkien may have been a genius, and a master at creating worlds, but he sucked totally at making an engaging story. I get teh impression LOTR was made todescribe the world, not tell the story of Frodo etc.
The Hobbit is a far better book by comparison.

Blasphemy. My only problem with Bombadil was it was dull, boring and not necessary. The other parts of the book were good, long winded at times, but good.

Lets not start a holy here and remember when your joking be sure to add some ;) or similar effect. You can't tell sarcasim from text very easily. You can only guess at it.
Now, at last, the masks had fallen away.  The strings of the puppets had become visible, and the hands of the prime mover exposed.  Most ironic of all was the last gift that Raziel had given me, more powerful than the sword that now held his soul, more acute even than the vision his sacrifice had accorded me - the first bitter taste of that terrible illusion:  Hope.

. . . So I'm 'not allowed' to have a negative opinion of the Lord of the Rings unless I'm joking? :P  He did design an interesting world, but the writing/story telling, frankly, sucked.  Note the lack of smilies and joking manner.

The world wasn't even really all that interesting.  Who did the Gondorians and Rohirrim trade with? Why were there, like, cavemen between Bree and Isengard?  What was up with Bree, anyways?  Which country did they belong to?  What happened to that old kingdom that Weathertop was part of?  Kingdoms get destroyed, sure, but people settle to fill the vacuum.  Why the heck is the river Anduin flowing between Minas Tirith and Minas Morgul, when--if you look at the map--it's probably far more likely that it'd turn east and go into that big vast empty expanse that is apparently full of evil humans.

Oh well, at least there's Umbar.  And oliphants.

LotR is a good book. It had it's moments where the plot could have moved along quicker but each writer has their own form of writing. Tolkien happens to be detailed orientated.
