Here's an interesting link to how game ratings are determined in the U.S.

Despite his heartthrob status in real life, Orlando Bloom has consistently functioned as a node of negative energy onscreen, sucking the life force out of all who surround him. --Dana Stevens, Slate.com

Notice that the author calls people who unlocked hidden content "hackers".

The paper today says the govt here is will withdraw GTH:SA from sale because of the sex content. Because we don't have an R rating, anything over M can't be sold. Rockstar is saying they will produce another version without the contentious material.
The modder is quoted as saying his mod did not introduce the material, just like Sim said - and that Rockstar is responsible for it. He's a bit mad they tried to blame him.
(Modders are vindicated. Pathetic that Rockstar tried to wriggle out.)

oh look, it's Paramount vs. the ST fan community, all over again...

more proof modders are bad ppl:

publisher considering legal action against mod-tool maker (wes better watch his arse if BG suddenly enjoys a return topopularity, or Hillary finds out about Kiarya/Zaiya..)

and from Bungie.net:

Quote
Q: Why is modified content bad?

A: Because it sucks. It ruins the experience for legitimate players, and is almost universally used to cheat. If you want to play modded content with your friends, do it on System Link. If you log into Live, you're banned. You've been warned.

I still can't believe that in a game which lets you commit all sorts of crimes, sex between consenting adults is the major issue. I might be totally mislead, but is Mrs Clinton compensating?

@game companies vs. modders: To get things straight I would wager that modders have a major influence on a games longevity, community appeal and follow-up purchases. Going around threatening legal action against the people who care most about your product is just as stupid as suing people for dressing up for conventions or fanfic.

As for the XBOX: Bill Gates will safe your world today! Or you he'll get a new patch out tomorrow.

Action Replay is more of a cheating tool, so if anything the ShadowKeeper author should be keeping an eye out ;).

Especially because in this case, Rockstar blamed those evil haX0rz for the content, then had to backpedal furiously when it was also discovered on the PS2 version.  Exactly how stupid do they think we are?  Any game company with the tiniest bit of sense knows that for decades, people have been turning up the "Easter Eggs" and other things in games, and finding ways to get at that via passwords or whatever else it takes.  They knew they were essentially shipping a game with strong sexual content, and skirting the ratings system in the process.

Not that I think the ratings board should be making such a big deal about sex, but Rockstar is primarily to blame for this one.  (And Sen. Clinton should go elsewhere to find a new issue for her upcoming run for the Presidency, and leave video games out of it.)

Re: Game companies vs Modders:
Did I read all those articles wrong?  It looked to me like they were only going after people that make tools and make a profit from it.  If that's the case, the modding community shouldn't have to worry as long as they don't charge for thier stuff.  Sure, we'll still often be the scapegoat, but closing it down completely would hurt the gaming companies in the end (hind end ;D).

I think if you wind up hurting the gaming companies profit margin, you get in trouble, too.  Which I agree with.

Actually on one angle you could say modders are bad people as they revive old shite while you want to peddle your brand new game.

But since your brand new game is an obvious attempt to cash in /rip-off/ perversion/less interesting copy of something else that was successful, modders are providing a community service by giving gamers something to play until you make something they want to play. Not optimum for you, but at least you can see the kind of thing they are actually interested in. Not that you will pay any attention, but we fight the good fight.

GTA:SA changed from M (17) to AO (18) and removed from shelves and production, while the patch will remove the exploit. R* and Take Two prepare for really low profits, shareholders will lose .50 $ per share: http://ir.take2games.com/ReleaseDetail.cfm?ReleaseID=169278. R* will also re-release the game at the end of the year, with impervious-to-Hot-Coffee code.

Umm, I wouldn't like to be the maker of Hot Coffee (or the employee who hid the scenes in the game script), if they sue him for the lost sales  :(

The sad part is that you actually see a naked woman in GTA:SA - during one of the cutscenes, you enter a sex shop and will see a woman with bare private parts, then shortly after enter her house wearing only a tanga and wielding as a weapon a dildo.
Mom: "What did you do today, Carl?"
Carl: "I stole a car, killed the previous owner with a chainsaw, ran off some people"
M: "Ok..."
C: "Then I entered a sex shop, saw a nude woman, killed a guy and entered in a stranger's house wearing only a tanga and wielding a dildo."
M: "OK..."
C: "And then I had sex."
M: "WHAT!!!?? YOU HAD SEX!!!??? GO TO BED WITHOUT DINNER AND DON'T GO OUT FOR A MONTH!!"

The good news is, of course, that nobody who already owns the game will bother installing the new patch anyway, because GTA patches never actually fix any errors.

Believe it or not, in 19th century England it was illegal to publically display a naked mannequin.

Picture the scene. Encouraged by his favourite game appearing on the front page, a 10 year old sits down at the kitchen table reading the newspaper for the first time, his parents watch fondly. Half an hour later he looks up frowning, "Mommy, what are 'labia'?"

How did the pollie get the information about the  alleged display of genitalia? Had he played the game? I would like to think that it was someone mischievous, tapping into the fears of the nation. I would also like to think that the pollie was just taking the opportunity to say the word labia, and give himself a thrill. Sadly, it's much more likely that it was just election preparations. What do you think they will say when they find out about anime?
