No imminent risk of BG3

(quick summary: Hasbro gave Infogrames a $65 million cash infusion in exchange for returning the digital rights to various Hasbro properties. Infogrames' D&D/D20 license is re-upped for 10 years, but listed titles for 2005-2006 are "D&D Online, NeverWinter Nights 2 and Dragonshard.")

I realize it's Dragonshard but all I can think of is that Dragonshard has such potential as an XXX RPG.

Although, one person's pornographic computer game is another person's erotic awakening through point and click.

Oh, nicely put, St. Jo. All I could think of was the juvenile, "Tee hee! Horny dragons! Hide them from the kids!"

Still that is a lot of dough for a company deemed 'dead'. I thought the trend was to make up your own gameworld and just 'adapt' the rules implicitly without buying into the AD&D universe from WotC.

Well, clearly Hasbro believes (rightly so) that there is money to be made on D&D computer games, so it follows that there would be a company out there that would feel there is money in developing and publishing them.

Perhaps I was surprised to see the license still with Interplay after its shutdown a while ago. One would think that such gems would be the first to go. On the other hand while I think there is money to be made in CRPGs, I would wager that it does not necessarily have to be AD&D. Are Fable, Jade Empire, Guild Wars AD&D titles? I'll have to do some surfing to back up that assumption.

Infogrames has the license now, not Interplay.  Their names may both begin with the letter 'i', but they're two different companies :).  Infogrames absorbed GT Interactive a few years ago, and is the parent company of Atari.

And to further confuse matters, it had been Hasbro Interactive which licensed various old-school Atari trademark/intellectual properties until Infogrames came along and bought up the rights to the name.

Even more confusing is that Infogrames also bought Hasbro Interactive, Hasbro's computer game arm :).

Yeah Infogrames and Atari confused the hell out of me with Civilisation X. Please Sid, I want Firaxis back!

@Jester - isn't Civ4 done outside Atari?

As for no BG3 for time being - considering the things I read about plans for the game I'd say it's better this way...

Just read more, BG3 is not mentioned but they talk about Dungeons & Dragons in "all interactive formats" whatever that means...

'DragonsHard' needs to be on the jcompton Seedy Romance Novel list.

It means the license includes games for mobile phones, cable/satellite boxes, DVD players, handhelds, etc as well as the standard computers & consoles.

I feel that BG3 won't be released just yet because they don't have funding to go ahead with it. They'll wait to see how(if?) Dragonshard flops.
Maybe BG3 will be released same time as Duke Nukem forever.
