Moving Silently&Invisibility
« on: May 14, 2005, 12:15:39 AM »
Hello,Echon!

I was wondering how technically Move Silently/Hide in Shadow and Invisibility (potion/spell) differentiate one from the other (if there is any difference). What I was thinking is that a successful Move Silently/Hide in Shadow should be more effective than normal Invisibility because it *also* includes avoid any possible alarming noises. Invisibility can be cast on anyone whom might have no idea about how to be good at stealth thus being audibly trackable.

I am curious to know if originally Baldur's Gate consider this aspect and if not, I'd like to know if FotD patches such inconsistency. Thanks and again, great job!!  ;)

Technically, the Stealth ability of thieves and rangers is nothing more than innate invisibility. The engine does not differentiate between a steathed thief and a wizard who has cast Invisibility on himself. And unfortunately, changing any of this is not possible.

I feared it could be so. To your knowledge, does the BG II/ToB engine behaves under the same principles ? Or is it more advanced in this regard ?

BG2 does split Stealth up into Hide In Shadows and Move Silently. As far as I know, this is what they might also have called those abilities: Become Invisible and Remain Invisible.

Yes, what you'd call those two proficiencies is certainly correct but slightly anticlimatic ( :)). What I meant to ask was if BG 2/ToB has the same hard coded limitation of considering succesfull Move Silently and Invisibility the same by not taking into account the "sound" parameter...

Yes, it is the same as in BG.
