Author Topic: Simding, a question about the mod compatibility/issues.  (Read 3346 times)

First of all, I want to say that this mod is GREAT.  I never felt the complexity of a character in RPG games could be actualized in any more realistic way.

But to the main question now.  Few days ago, while I was installing virtue mod on the game, my computer went to a drastic break down.  I do not know what exactly happened; I heard the phone ring, and I rushed off from the computer.  When I came back about 5-10 min later (it was a bit long call), the computer's power was off.  And most "tragically," when I rebooted computer, virtually nothing was working in windows.  For example, clicking internet explorer or microsoft word from the start menu would not cause anything to happen.

Eventually, I had to format the whole computer and reinstall everything.  Because I do not want to go through the whole procedure again, obviously I have not touched anything with BG2 including mods like virtue.  Well, I am feeling the call to play the game again :) and I just wanted a little advise/help from you.

I think I only had a couple of weidu mods installed when the crash happened.  This time though, I am thinking about installing all of following mods:

Unfinished Business
Ease of Use
Ascension
The Longer Road (or Redemption)
Banter Pack
Flirt pack
Virtue

Now, except LR and Flirt Pack, I know for sure everything in the list is weidu or pocket plane mods.  And in the readme, you have indicated that these work fine with Virtue AS LONG AS I install virtue after all the others.

So here are my questions.  I know you are busy, but some help would be really nice.

1.  What do you think caused the kind of damage I just explained?  I merely want to learn the cause/possibility so that I would not repeat the mistake.  Formatting your comptuer when completely unprepared with no backup [I almost lost some important files I accumulated on my comp :(] is not a procedure I would like to go throug again.

2.  How do I install all the mods? (i.e. All the Weidu or Pocket plane mods first, then virtue, than any other mods that do not belong to weidu and pocket plane?)

3.  Are LR and Flirt pack considered as Pocket Plane Mods as well?  If not, should I install them after Virtue?

Finally, I know this is totally unrelated with the question I am asking, but could anyone give me the website address/direct link to the forum of the Longer Road?  I somehow cannot find it for litterally one hour :(.

Many thanks to everyone who can help me! :)

If there are any particular mods that are known to have a severe error with Virtue, I would really appreciate it.  Thanks!

Sorry, I am utterly clueless about the rest. What kind of operating system are you running? I never managed to kill XP prof with anything.

Maybe there has been an istantaneous black-out, which shut down the PC and damaged the HD. I'll be damned if this has to do with Virtue, somebody would have noticed before.
Istantaneous black-out = some times, your electricity panel is set up so that it re-starts automatically, or at least so happens in my dorm.

BTW, all the mods you listed are WeiDU, and in a general rule PPG mods, with the exception of Virtue and parts of Ease of Use, are somewhat archaic - or don't simply need to be installed late - and should be installed as close to first as possible. useful pointers are Solaufein, then Kelsey, then Keto, then Spell50, then the rest.

Code-wise, they could use some reworking to improve compatibility. OK, they came out before modern ones and the burden should fall on newer mods, but stuff like overwriting IDS and other files should be still turned to patching.

There's not really any way this can be directly connected to Virtue, I'm afraid, or indeed any mods at all. Coincidental timing, most likely.

Of the mods you list, make sure you install Ascension before Longer Road and Kelsey, and Virtue last of all.

Flirt Pack is a PPG mod, since it's hosted on this site. LR is hosted elsewhere, and so isn't. However, that doesn't have any direct bearing on install order, because Virtue should always be installed last without exception.

Hope that helps.

Here's a stupid question.  I'd been intending to install Virtue, but what happens if I want to install a new mod afterwards?  There wouldn't be any problems if I uninstalled Virtue, installed the new mod, then reinstalled Virtue, would there?  Or does that only happen if you uninstall-then-reinstall (in the wrong order) a mod that affects the dialog.tlk file, where you get screwed up labels on people/wrong dialogue?

Well, theoretically, there shouldn't be any way problems can occur.

In practice, however, from time to time somebody comes along with text issues apparently caused by mucho reinstallation. Whether that is the actual cause, or they've just done something wrong, I'm not sure, but I generally discourage adding anything but NPC mods and minor tweaks mid-game, because there's a fairly broad spectrum of stuff that might go wrong unless you're extremely careful.
