You want your game in your head while doing other stuff?
« on: April 19, 2005, 05:24:20 PM »
Since I never purchase extra bonus celebration gold packages I never found out what <drumroll> gooodies they would contain apart from a bunch of trading cards, but after a friend treated me to the IWD soundtrack, I experienced how you can be addicted to a game and play it in your head while doing your daily chores. Yay, go me!  ::)(Yes, I am a desperate houseman).

So to those of you who have not dicovered it yet: Get the soundtracks asap! My personal favourites are Planescape Torment and the IWD series and of course 'A kiss to build a dream on'.

To those of you who have already been enjoying this stuff all the time: Shame on you! Why has nobody told me earlier? ???

If I listened to the sountracks of my games my family and friends would insist it's time for me to be medicated for ob/com disorder.  :D

I think the soundtrack came with the special boxed set of BG2 that I bought, not sure though.  I was playing in Amkethran the other night, thinking how the soundtrack there reminded me of some of the soundtrack from Conan.  Maybe I should throw it in the CD player and confuse my (non-BG-playing) husband.

I had extracted some PS 'themes' a while back - the music is just too damned good - but didn't realize there was an actual soundtrack.

A quick search on Amazon for "myst soundtrack" turned up hits for Myst, Riven, and Myst III: Exile.  I looked specifically for Uru but no dice.

Thanks for checking, Xiao. :)  It's too bad because I think Peter Gabriel did some of the music for the game.

Aw, man.  I love Peter Gabriel...  *goes off to sulk*

You know, now that I think of it, I don't think I ever played Myst III or Uru.  Dammit, more old games to buy.  (Currently playing Planescape: Torment and Sanitarium, in addition to BG2 and City of Heroes.)

I really enjoyed Myst: Riven but I did need one of those thick books to get me through it.  Uru, is different because of its real-time 3D environment and you make your own character.  Enjoyable but in someways I didn't like the departure from the standard environment. (Plus I still haven't finished it yet) :-[

Well, Myst fans can rejoice. Myst IV: End of Ages has been announced, and it's supposed to pick up right at the end of the original Myst, where your job is to restore the D'ni civilization.  Could be cool.

As for soundtracks that stick in your head, The 7th Guest and The 11th Hour stick out as two of the best soundtracks ever made.  My good buddy George "The Fat Man" Sanger is the composer of this, and several hundred other video game scores.  I so loved the soundtracks, that I bought "7/11" which is the combined soundtracks for both games.

The 7th Guest was groundbreaking in a lot of ways, but for all the accolades the game had, the soundtrack is the thing that shines above and beyond anything else.

If you want a list of the Fat Man's credits, try this link:
http://www.fatman.com/faqs.htm

It has only a partial list of games that he's composed music for, and some of them you guys and gals will go, "He did THAT!?"

If you want to listen to some more stuff that isn't available on his personal site go here:
http://www.gamasutra.com/galleries/audio/george_sanger/

Now you all will have to register to access the page, but if you want to keep your finger on the industry pulse, Gamasutra is a great site for that.

Anyway, track down an old copy of The 7th Guest and/or The 11th Hour. That music is great, has a rock/rockabilly feel to it, and trust me: ingame, it was creepy.  Really good ambient music for the office...I'm listening to it right now, in fact.

And if you want to buy Fat's CDs, try:
http://www.texasmusicroundup.com

And give a listen to Elizabeth McQueen and the Firebrands while you're at it.  80s covers with a touch of country. Some are better than the originals.

St. Jo will vouch for me on these, won't you?

Anywho. Take it as you will. I think George is a great composer, but and even greater person. Very personable, and gracious. Gives greaet advice about what pro audio eq to buy. Thanks, Fat!

Okay, the only link I could find for the BGII soundtrack led me to Interplay, which doesn't exist any more.  Any suggestions where I can get it, please?

Oh help, I found it by searching Bioware ... 79mb ... dialup ... <cries>

Yup, I will.  The Fat Man's 7/11 CD is really good music, period.  It's not just for background, it's that outstanding.  The only connection with Elizabeth McQueen is that they're both sold on the same site and that's how I found her, while looking for Fat.  Oops, I think they're more of a connection than that; I think someone from Team Fat plays on her CD (right, Opera?).  She doesn't do game music, though.  So, slightly off-topic.  Sorry.

I have the IWD soundtracks, as well.  Nice background music.

Using the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon approach, talking about Elizabeth McQueen is only one degree removed from the Fat Man, because he plays guitar on her album, and Fat's brother is the producer of both albums (also the drummer for every track on both albums)....so it relatively on-topic...:P

Even if you happen to not like Jules Verne and consequently loath Arcanum (although I would have loved to  use the Vendigroth Device on Jon) I think the soundtrack is amazing.

I like the dark mood which reminds me of Elgar.

Give your BG2 mods more music! Steal, beg and borrow, if you have to, but skip the action text and give me some sounds.

You are so full of shit. The soundtrack is amazing? What the hell is wrong with you?

The Arcanum Soundtrack consists of violins. Nothing but violins, forever, on infinite loop, the same god damn music playing over and over again for all eternity using only one instrument. Is it amazing? Yes. Amazingly fucking obnoxious.

Actually it is a string quartett most of the time so it is using only four instruments which btw does not invalidate your point of me being full of shit.

Not unlike a movie score it has to create a mood and not distract from the plot which a too catchy tune might do.

A movie, or game score can be catchy. Seriously, who here hasn't hummed Imperial March at least once (even a few bars), and the Star Wars movies are generally considered pretty good. All the music needs is to do is enhance the scene or drive you towards the appropriate emotion.

Arcanum sucks, and thus the music associated was clearly intended to make you hate the game EVEN MORE.

I was inclined to think you were going for an argument right up to that point. I am glad you didn't.

@Star Wars:
Oooh Jason's theme rocks for sure, but how often have you been humming ' Mouse Robot and Blasting Off' or the unforgettable ' The Land of the Sand People' not to mention 'Leia breaks the news' and all the other catchy background stuff.

You did not like the game? Fine! Since you haven't stated why there is little to say about it, but I did and I liked the music.

True, not every track is exactly memorable (or hummable), my point was that it's not a requirement for music to be non-catchy. And, well, everyone's taste is different I suppose.

They're probably copyrighted so they can't be legally 'given' away, but a quick search for me turned up 146 places where I can get the tracks for those three games, I won't say where right now so as not to promote'pirating', unless the moderators don't mind.
But the soundtrack that I find very hard to get out of your head is the one from the ST:TNG Inner light
