Where does your nickname come from?
« on: March 05, 2005, 09:38:21 AM »
Whilst reading the boards at... some other place ;) I basically stole this idea, and forgive me if it's been done before, but I am rather curious...

I've been lurking about here in PPG Land for a few months now and occasionally putting my 2 cents in, and some of the nicknames are interesting, but I would be curious to find out the sources of said nicknames.

So... Where does your name come from?

Mine? Well it comes from a bit done on the show MST3k in Episode 522 - Teenage Crimewave, where they make note of the fact that the first person to suffer actual harm in the movie was a great big Doughy Guy, then proceed to extol the virtues of Doughy Men, and their heyday during the 40's and 50's then show a crawl on the screen listing 20 or 30 great Doughy Guys in history, all the while singing 'Doughy Guy, Buttery Doughy Guy..."

Here's a transcript of the skit : http://mst3k.booyaka.com/lists/522.shtml

One day I had to create a nickname for a chat room and happened to be watching that episode, and I kinda just kept it... Beside, I am kind of a doughy guy... :)

So please, I'd like to hear where some of the more colorful nicknames originated from...

Ahhhh. I knew it was used in MST3K, but didn't realize you were using it in that sense.

I'll just make my usual joke about how my real name is Derward Jablonsky but my agent suggested that "Jason Compton" would go over better in Hollywood.

Kismet was the name of my first character in Asheron's Call back from 1999.  I needed a vaguely Arabic sounding name that was easy to type and remember and "Kismet" fit the bill.  Now I use it everywhere.

The name "Evaine" was the only thing I liked about NWN.
"Dian" refers to the Roman goddess of hunting. It used to be my nickname on chat. Back then, it brought me good luck, as it caught the attention of the son of a classicist and huntsman, so I used it ever since  :)

When I was little I used to like to pretend I was "King of the World" where I would make my 2 younger brothers be my slaves.

As I got older I was disappointed to find the US run by 'turd sandwiches and giant douches.'

Anyway, it doesn't bother me now because I've realized I don't like any other kings except those played by me.

On the plus side, the crown is pretty authoritive.  :)

It's from one of my characters from EverQuest; I was trying to come up with the name of a monk and thought of my tai chi instructor from back in college.  So, I adopted her name for my character, and it became my board nick as well.

Mine is just a shortening of my name. The very first time I joined a board- Mask of Eternity? Return to Krondor?- I experienced a complete lack of ideas about what name to use, so I just used the first 5 letters of my name. That was rejected,(I think because I joined twice - I was still learning how to double click) so I dropped another letter. I was trying for a male sounding name: in those days some posters were extremely disparaging to you if they thought you were a girly-type person, as if you had no business either playing games or being on the Net.

If only those guys realized how many women they could meet by writing softcore game add-ons, perhaps they'd have changed their tune.

In this post I will admit to two shames.

The first being that Ghreyfain was the name of a paladin I played in... Diablo 2.  Yes, I played Diablo 2.  Shuddup.

The second is that now that I'm actually self-confident enough to let real world people know what I do online (you should hear me talking to my manager to request a day off for Iron Modder), I also have to tell them what my alias is.  Of course, if I changed my name, no one here would know who I was, so I'm sort of stuck.  Ah well.

So... you just stopped playing Diablo and realized BG is better, or what? And to play Diablo 2... you must have played.... Diablo 1? Good god man. Some things are better left behind.  :-X

*whistles appreciatively*  ;D

Yeah, even at the start of EQ - which was what, 6 years ago? - I ran into a lot of guys online who were surprised I was a woman IRL.  Then again, I ran into enough other guys who hit on me, which means either they're optimists or don't care...

[shameful admission]Um, I played D2 as well.[/sa]

Corvis was a character I played in a PBeM (Play by E-Mail) Planescape game gone horribly, horribly wrong. He was a wereraven mage/thief with ties to the Indeps who was, essentially, a tabloid reporter. He talked far too much (like me) and was essentially decent (not like me), and I still thing it's a shame that game went bad.

Diablo 2 kicks ass. Which is where I got this cool name from, one of the end bosses. Plus it fits my vampiric nature.

Mine started as an IRL nickname, when I began my habit of dyeing my hair primary red. There was another girl who dyed her hair green, so we became Stop and Go.

Go went away, but I remained, as Stop.

The name just got longer as time went on.

There are actually people out there who don't know what my real name is, albeit they're rather far and few between.

Also, Diablo II is a perfectly acceptable mindless activity, good for multiplayer and frustration venting!

Mine isn't so colorful as all the above, I just plugged a couple of letters together and added an apostrophe or two.  I was g'lain l'oral when I first got on line, but now I've just shortened it to g'lain.  :)

Bah, I'm as boring as they come.  I named myself after the city I lived in.

And I confess that Diablo II is one of my guilty pleasures.  I love formulating my own weapons.  And... killing mindlessly, as well.

SeanFan is the name I picked when I was joining a movie forum to discuss the Lord of the Rings movies. I posted in USENET for a long time using my RL name (like brave Sir Jason does), but after a bad experience with that I decided to use an alias.

It just so happens that one of my favorite actors was in the LotR movies and is named Sean, so it seemed appropriate. Less so for this forum, but hey, I'm used to it.

I must say the name does lead a lot of people to assume I am male, especially since the av I used on the movie forum was the actor's picture. What was really funny is how many times other posters, knowing I'm a Lord of the Rings fan, assumed that I'm the stereotypical LotR geek---you know, a 16-year old pimply male living in his parent's basement.

After a lurking period as otaku at various boards I decided to settle for an agenda instead of a name. The reason was that I could not think of a decent name nor letter-number combination of any kind.

After brainstorming a shortlist of a hundred names which rivalled in being equally obnoxious and aspiring I wanted to settle for Derward Jablonsky as it had a manly ring to it, but decided against offending any living powers. So I settled for something I could remotely relate to: a jester

On a sidenote I noticed that my dog disapproved of this name as he has been giving me the look ever since. He might have tried for something more heroic. Well, in another life I guess.

Regullus or correctly Regulus is a double star in the constellation of Leo. The double ll was a typo that I never bothered to fix. In life, Regulus is a six year old Connemara mare who descends twice from a stallion called Star Boy hence her name. I have used the name, and other pony names too (there are twenty-seven to choose from), to name my pc characters

The soft core add-on remark has left me puzzled and  I am almost offended by the assumption but not.
