Planar Sphere: Hell graphical oddity.
« on: February 20, 2005, 07:27:59 AM »
SixOfSpades pointed out somewhere that area graphics here change when you go near them as if to obscure a cave entrance. He's furnished me with some screenshots though I don't really know if we can do anything with them. Still, it is a measure of Unfinished Business, even though we don't know what is unfinished. ;)

Still it looks nice and shows that, um, research and stuff is actually still ongoing. Maybe.

This shot, I think, is before you get close:

And this one is, I think, after. So there's a big boulder which stops you walking to where the cave mouth would presumably be.

It's safe to remove the "I think" dependent clauses, Andyr: The first one is indeed (pretty much) as close as you can get to the thing before the boulder suddenly appears, and the second one is after it has done so. The green "party go here" markers are in exactly the same position in both screenshots, by the way.

The ironic thing is that, whatever the thing is, it looks more like a cave when it's blocked than when it's relatively accessible: The boulder blocking the 'entrance' is clearly hollow, and there's light shining from beneath it, making me really really want to know what was denied to me. :)

So if, indeed, there's an unused ARE file that looks rather Hellish, this might be just where it was originally intended to go.

Yeh, that's why I put the I think qualification: the 'after' shot does look more cave-like.

Anyone else notices that the rock that covers up part of the area looks *exactly* like the one just above, that's present in the area's background? It must been added really hastily if they couldn,t even afford an original design for it...

EDIT: Also note the weird dotted line outlining the lower part of the top rock... It's not a pic error, this is actually in the files.

EDIT2: Now look at the lower rock. It displays that exact same line too, as well as a portion of what it's supposed to be covering (i.e. what's just below the top rock is also just below the bottom rock). A very shoddy paste-and-cut job.

EDIT3: Oh, and of course, this area has a cut area script file.

The overlay coordinates are funky. That's why this happens. What's supposed to happen? The eyes are supposed to open (they're eyes, in case you were wondering). I never could get the animation to work properly (the eyes would simply rapidly open and close continuously).

Just some left over crap where BioWare either ran out of time, forgot, or just gave up.

What makes you say they were/are eyes, out of interest?

Check the animation. They're AM414E*.

Cookie if you figure out how to make it work.

They have three separate animations and you can open one whole eye and half of the other one, IIRC. As I stated, I couldn't get them to do anything more than continuously blink.

I BET THIS QUEST IS TIED IN WITH THE UNSEEING EYE WHICH IS TIED IN WITH THE TWISTED RUNE!  omg!  The ever-blinking hellish eye + unseeing eye = bifocal tyranny!

A blinking eye might be hellish and a little creepy, but would have nothing to do with a cut area script.

Got any screenshots, devSin?

That would make sense, since Lavok is one of the original members of the Twisted Rune.

Or not :P

Okay, well, I got one of 'em to blink on a timer, but using BAMWorkshop to delete the first sequence (three frames of closed eye) made it have pink dots.  Suckeriffic.

Anyone know how to get a VVC to play a BAM's second sequence, instead of first?

The overlay co-ordinates should be fixed, I think. It looks like shit right now.

The Fixpack contains the fixes that devSin coded up for this, at least, if you want to nab them.

Okay. Well I don't think UB really needs it if the fixpack has it.

Well, if we're all in agreement that there's either nothing to fix or it'll be fixed by the Fixpack, then can we close the book on this topic?  I'm just itching to merge it.  :)

I fix the coordinates. UB is supposed to make the eyes actually do something.

(I don't vote here, but my thought is that this one is a non-starter. It seems like a fix best left to the Fixpack, and not placed in UB)
