Baby Name Suggestions and Poll but This Time for a Girl
« on: February 05, 2005, 01:51:51 PM »
I would like to think the title says it all. If you have any suggestions please feel free to post. :) The name Lily Beatrice Taylor is the name that my husband and I arrived at after much discussion. I like it quite a bit but my husband is less enthusiastic but not against it. He worries that she may be teased. Also her pet name could be "Lily B."

Lily is a fabulous name for a little girl. Just because it is my neice's name does not make me biased in any way. Nope! Not biased! (OMG! Best Name EVAARRR!)

I like Beatrice, too. It does have an old-fashioned feel to it, which is probably causing the concern, but from what I gather, retro names have grown in popularity the past few years over the Hannah-Briannas and Emilys.

The name flows rather smoothly, so it's good in that respect. :)

But if I may ask about using Beatrice? Is there some significance to using an older generational name, perhaps a family relationship?  Personally I'm not fond of the Lily but I do think as a whole, it's a lovely  name. :)

In my neice's case, she is actually a Lillian, named after her great-grandmother. It does make you wonder, though if I were of a reproductive bent, I doubt would give that any consideration and just pick names I liked saying and hearing repeatedly. Because, you know, they'll get a lot of use. :)

For my first baby we used a family surname for the first and a good sounding 'G' name for the middle to match the initials of his grandfather.  For the second baby, we just used names we liked.

Because, you know, they'll get a lot of use. :)

Beatrice is both my mother's name and my sister-in-law's name. I am not overly fond of Beatrice when pronounced in
English, I love the Italian pronounciation but it would probably sound affected in English. Actually all the names are family names. The name Lily is from a great, great aunt that had a short but brave (imo) life in the 19th century.

I don't necessarily believe in using family names, as first names, my name is unique (no, not Regullus) to my family.

i like traditional names.  my husband's grandmother's name was Beatrice (also Italian), so i guess i am a bit biased, since she was such a terrific woman.

Lily B. is a character in a series of young adult books.  :)

Lily is a pretty name.  I have a friend who had a spunky Victorian era aunt named Fabiola that we both vowed that, whoever had a daughter first, would get the name.  Well, she has a son and I don't have any children, which I guess is all for the best.    ;)

If they are family names then it's a double winner.
I would hesitate over Beatrice usually but's that's the anti-monarchist in me coming out. Call her the Italian one, it will really only be in your family that people use it, and they will all say it right. It gives her some cache having an unusaul name. And something to resent you for when she's a teenager. That's very important.  ;)
Lily is a really pretty name, and has no behavioural/learning problems attached to it. I would have no concerns when reading that name on the class roll. Very good name.
Reassure your husband teasing over names is passe now. Nobody will blink at Lily - and kids don't start using their second names for some years. They are usually fascinated to find they have one. She will be quite safe. (I think it's safeto say that children where you are have the same basic nature as here.)
When is she due? This is so nice. :D

@St Jo - I had no idea there was a book about a Lily B. Very exciting. Part of the reason I love the name Lily is due to the story of my great, great aunt. I wanted to use her full name which was Lily MacGregor but my husband thought MacGregor sounded too Scottish and was adamantly opposed. He has nothing against the Scots, he just thought it sounded too ethnic. I am unsure why he has the problem but compromises must be reached at times.

@Eral - I am glad to know that there are no behavioural/learning problems associated with the name, and that teasing is passe. I am excited. She is not due for another twelve weeks and I am huge and awkward.  :-[

Name her Ghreyfina.

Well, she probably would get teased beat up ostracized much less with that name than if you named her SimDingA.  ;)

You mean SimDing4.  And yes, I see your point.  No one's going to go after someone named after a pirate.  You think Blackbeard got teased at school?  No way.  He bit off the noses of bullies like that and bartered them for lunch money.

Well, I am disheartened that 2 people (or 20% of respondents) find the name ugly. Names I find ugly are along the lines of Condyloma, Chlamydia and Rubella. If anyone has those names, I do apologize for any offense. I would have thought the name too bland to be ugly.

All opinions are valid, and I did after all add the ugly option. Thanks for voting...anonymously. ;)

@ Blood Raven - I do like the alternate spelling of Lilly too.

@Ghrey - Would it not be more logical Ghreyfaina? I do wonder how SimDinga or Dinga would play at school, I almost think there would be guaranteed teasing and of course, teenage resentment from the child later.

Maybe the flower was named after Harry Potter's mother.   ::)
