Item Upgrade code

I'm sure this is hiding in plain sight somewhere but I've been unable to find it.  I vaguely recall that someone (Cam?) posted some code on how upgrading items via Cromwell/Cespenar could be done more neatly than Item Upgrade does it.  Anyone know where this is?
