...Is this possible?
« on: January 31, 2005, 09:01:20 PM »
I have BG2ToB installed with the Big Picture mod and several others (it was hell to install and work the bugs out), and I have a very long game that is now into ToB (Finaly).  However I have been wanting to take a bit of a break and dust of BG1, and I am very interested in playing BG1Tutu.  I have installed a full install of BG1 and TotSC, and BG2 (so I have 2 installs of BG2 in diffrent directorys), and seeing as I have less then 1 gig left of free hard drive space I dont want to install Throne of Bhaal.

Now here is the problem:  When I go too install the BG2 patch it says that I have Throne of Bhall installed and I dont need this and it cancels the install.  Obviously it is checking the registry and only looking at my old install of BG2ToB, and not my new clean install of BG2.  Soooooo how do I get around this without loosing my Big picture verson of BG2ToB in the process?

I don't know if that works but you could change the path in the registry for the "BGMain.exe" and for the "baldur.exe". But don't forget to backup your registry before any changes happen in case something goes wrong or you forget what you changed  ;D.

Try this
http://forums.pocketplane.net/index.php?topic=15921.0

You may be able to move/copy/rename  your heavily modded one to a new directory name ifi for no other reason then to have a full backup) then install a new copy to the same directory for registry purposes, BG really doesn't appear to need the reg keys, it seems to help more with autostarting. Then put a shortcut on the desktop to the Tutu'd copy of IIRC bgmain.exe to the desktop, with the starting directory the Tutu directory.

I did that it works for me, I have a BG1/TotSC full install, BGII full install, BG2-Tutu without the CDx directories, on my computer.

Wow, I read that thread and the subthread, and it was really confusing.

underdog is right, BG doesn't need the reg to work. You can move your modded game to another location and install a new one exactly into the old location (so that you do not double the entries in the registry).

That new game can be patched and modded as much as you want to without changing the old one. You can play the original when you doubleclick baldur.exe directly (via explorer) or you can add a shortcut to your desktop.

If you don't know the registry well I can't recommend making changes there. Things might backfire. Awfully. Been there..

As far as I understand, however, the problem is not only running the game, but also installing the patch. And the patches, afaik, do need the registry.

If the copy of BG you have installed is patched, you're copying the patch, too.  Yeah?

Doesn't Big Picture have an uninstall feature?  Copy it, and uninstall it from one of those games.
