An Appeal To Studios Administration
« on: January 23, 2005, 04:56:26 PM »
Please. Isn't it about time to cut ties with Telefragged?

http://www.dreamhost.com/shared : $10/mo for far more bandwidth and storage than you can possibly be using, particularly given the fact that most of the Studios modders rely on external mirrors for file hosting anyway.

Dreamhost is adequately now hosting the Attic, whose forum database contains roughly 2x the number of posts as Studios.

An even lower-budget option that I'd be willing to bet would still fit under your forum operation bandwidth costs with room to spare: http://www.oktagone.net/hostingmatrix-us.php

(for the innocent and uninitiated, this isn't some sort of vendetta against Telefragged, or even Studios for that matter. Performance has been subpar on the site literally since its inception and that's traditionally been blamed on the overloaded servers Telefragged provides for its free hosting. With value for money being through the roof these days at major service providers, however, the argument to stay on the free site is terribly uncompelling. And there's an ongoing outage today.)

It's strange; I've been regularly visiting another TF site for almost an entire decade now, and in all that time it can't have gone down even a quarter of the number of times as FWStudios has since its birth...

Sorry jason but you have no clue on FWMC bandwidth usage 400gb a month would be the minimum needed.

Then your forum is even more inefficient than I thought. We certainly know you're doing virtually no file traffic, having given up on 3DD.

This statistic is also brought to us by the man who brought us "90% of our hits are from Google."

Enjoy your downtime, then.

Funny. No jason once again you dont actually know what you are talking about with regard to FWMC, the website alone uses over 80gb of bw a month and the forum gets well over 3 times the traffic of the site, thats not including files on 3dd which I was ignoring in the 400gb a month minimum. It isn't inefficient its alot of visitors.
I don't enjoy the downtime at all but untill a suitable alternative can be found I have no choice but to accept it like everyone else.

Ever consider talking to Taluntain? Weidu.org certainly hasn't had much downtime the past couple years.

Yes I spoke to him sometime last year about it, sadly with the amount of bw needed by his own site and other things he hosts there wouldnt be enough to go around, and id rather not knock weidu offline :)

Some brief calculations suggest that half of that is probably due to the 100kb image plastered across the top of the site.

Oddly enough I knew you would say that heh

Sim thats not actually too bad, the graphics tend to get cached so they are not downloaded all the time.

Oh, I have caching turned off. I will enable it in the hope that it will help conserve your bandwidth.

I've also been reminded this info could easily help CoM as well, since they're apparently having some uptime issues now as well and I'd forgotten are also on TF.

Strangely enough, FW has been working just fine for me all day.  It's been a little slow, but so has Pocketplane.

And if FW is really using 400 GB of data transfer a month, then you definitely need to get your own server.

Seems like Telfragged is DoA at the moment. In the meantime for those who have questions about Chosen of Mystra mods go here for now until our main site comes back up.

And if FW is really using 400 GB of data transfer a month, then you definitely need to get your own server.

well in the last six months the main page has used between 60-80 gb bw a month, excluding hosted sites with between 1.5 and 2.5 million hits according to the stats program running, the forum hits are rougly 2-3 times more, yes i know its likely alot of rereshing and no caching but it all adds up no matter how you look at it, the online max of 128 wasnt a forum glitch. Now i know jason thinks im lying as ive just been forwarded his message frankly i wish i was because id like better uptimes for the site and forums and better service for the hosted sites too, however im not, i also didnt ask for money, i wanted to see who would help out *if* i was daft enough to want to spend 600 or so dollars a year on a dedicated server for everything fw hosts (and yes that would mean files too)

oh and right now its between 200 and 300gb a month, the 400 minimum is just being sensible, getting anything less would be silly if the forum is to keep growing.

Oh and the ddos thing jason, I know, golden oldie but thats what the owner of tf told me when i asked, aparently he has pissed off a few people lately by deleting them from the network *shrugs*
