Two glasses later I can report that I kinda like it, despite generally not liking pinot noir.

not liking pinot noir? what sort of heresy is this? i see the true reason for the FARCTURE is revealed in all its horror  :o . i know cheap burgundy can be a bit thin, and cheap new world pinots a bit too much like alcoholic ribena, but really...

Oh, I think Pinot is a very grey area. It's hard to find a nice one. So many taste like raspberry vinegar.  De Bortoli of Yarra Valley fame do a very nice Pinot Noir and so do (did?) Eyton's.
Who's up for some wine-tasting ? Do we go on a hunt in our respective countries or just send each other bottles?

If it is Australian I prefer Shiraz of which I found quite many good ones around the greater Adelaide area.

i'll be back in australia (melbourne, to be precise) shortly, so if yr interested in a yarra valley wine run (*mmm* coldstream hills and yarra yering wines straight from the source) i'm up for it.

Seanas -I think we are wine soulmates. Unfortunately, straight from the source it will set us back upto $30 bucks a bottle from Coldstream, whereas if we hit Dan Murphy's it's a mere $18.

Jester - :D South Australian wines are our most famous, everyone bows to the greatness of the Adelaide hills. I like a Cab Merlot more, now, though. I can stay awake longer.

Ok, my ignorance is showing again, (and supposedly I am a Wine and Food snob) but ARE there non-noir pinots? (Your life is so much more interesting than mine, Rev.)

Pinot grigio I believe I've had a time or two.

Or at least seen somewhere. :)

that's the one.  also pinot gris (grey), which afaik is interchangeable with grigio - [both] a crisper sort of white (though i prefer the term 'crispy' just to be a boor :pirate).  oregon has a nice grigio or two (plenty of pinots in general, i think), though the italians started it.  (grigio, not oregon)
and pinot blanc (green-hued, of course ???), and pinot meunier (closer to noir, never had it).

i would advise jassy to keep a brunello [altesino, when he's $olvent enough] on hand if he doesn't already - as a general rule, the women seem fond of it (also because it's Real Good, naturally).  not that he isn't kept busy enough with Blue, of course... but who knows, even her rarefied sensibilities may appreciate it.  ;)

I learned a lot from the last post and all my doubts who founded Oregon were blown away. :P

In the 90'ies as I remember them pinot grigio used to be the staple yuppie drink over here and you had to know at least a couple grappa brands too to keep up with the trendy crowd. I don't like white wines that much, but the name sparked a memory or two. Thanks! ;)

Is this why we love the Internet? My education will never be over.
Might be time for an excursion to Phillip Murphy's. He's Dan's son, and I hear he runs a wider range.

can you save me something?  all we have left of the homeland are an alice white shiraz, a yellowtail shiraz and shiraz-cab, a koonunga hill merlot and a bridgewater mill cab.

Save the Koonunga Hill till last. Yellowtail I'm not all that impressed with. (Alice being the Springs? Bridgewater I don't know.)
I'll let you know if I find anything spesh.

yes, i reckon yellowtail has a better rep here (westcoast US in general) than at home.  i think that's caused in part by an impressive chain of grocery stores named 'trader joe's'.  they make a point of having a stunning array of wines (and cheese), and almost every thing they carry is surprisingly cheap.  but esp. the wine and cheese.
i'll run back down to the 'cellar' in a few hours and check alice white on the map.

For the price, Yellow Tail is pretty good. I particularly like the shiraz (which is like $9/1.5L at Sam's Club) after it's been open for a day.

*taps nose* clever man.  :)

@Eral - looks like Alice White is not really to be trusted.  it (or at least its export form) isn't even bottled in aussie.  and says southeast, so i'm assuming no relation to Springs.  and doesn't mention anything more specific about location of production.  *raises an eyebrow*
must be why dad said 'this you can have' while putting the koonunga hill in the 'hands-off' reserves (with >all< of the italians :'() (so it's safe, as per your suggestion).

Anything drinkable under $10 counts as good with me. Yellowtail is newish here, and just doesn't impress me as much as my firm favourites - Kingston Estate and Fiddleback. I shall give a bottle to my dad and get his opinion. Gosh, I might just need to practice it a bit more.

i liek... beer!
Do we start a whole new thread, discussing various brands and flavours, or is that just generally, and preferably in bulk?  :D
My dad does both - he's a drunk with standards.

Well, I tend to buy bizarre micro-brews or european fancy schmancy crap, but I'm sure you food and wine connoisseurs would put me to shame at that if I even *thought* about being even slightly pretentious. :)

Although if you're ever in Calgary, the Brew Brothers has a pretty awesome flavour.  I think I've tried two types of wine in my entire life.  Not sure what their names are, because there's a heck of a lot of info on those bottles, but since my roommate bought 'em, they're probably unfit for even my consumption.

I knew it. Heineken et al. :D

So, either we are all wankers or we all just like alcohol, hmm?

Nah, can't stand Heineken.  Hoegaarden's probably my favourite at the moment.  And summer is the time for any sort of beer that you can add a lime to.  I'll have to keep the seasonal-wine-colour thing in mind if I ever decide grape juice is a proper beverage.
