Huygens probe lands on Titan!

In case you didn't know, it worked! :) Images and stuff are being posted on the ESA website at http://www.esa.int - I for one think it is pretty amazing.

Part of me gets all thin-lipped and disapproving that we spend squillions of dollars to find out what other planets look like - oh, rocky and dusty, in the mean-time people are dying of hunger, etc.

The other part of me that thinks knowledge is a good in itself, is so impressed and admiring of the achievement - I didn't think it would work. Here we are, finding out how a world is made. Incredible.

I wonder if early science fiction writers who envisaged other planets as fabulous other worlds would be disappointed. My grandfather always liked it when discoveries of similarities and regularity were made across the universe. He used to see it as proof of God.

Eh, we could spend all we wanted on space exploration, have free health care for everyone, and feed the hungry if we didn't bother with war, so I don't feel so bad about this sort of thing.

Although yeah, rocks and stuff are pretty boring.

I also question the naming of a probe which looks suspiciously like "huge anus" to me.

They become more interesting when they're from a million miles away, though.

Shouldn't we have made contact by now or do we need James Cameron to do the job?

St. Jo sent me here. I told Opera she'd be cross. But would he listen? No. Once they get a trailer it all goes to their heads.

It said on the news tonight that they haven't found any signs of life on Titan. Not a big surprise, but then I thought about Jester and Blood Raven, and hoped they're not too disappointed. Apparently Titan cannot sustain life because of the methane in the atmosphere. Umm, didn't we already know that about Titan?

I thought we are just searching for rocks. Aliens would be irritated, if we claimed to be searching for other intelligent lifeforms.

Unless of course we found life that could breathe methane. Which makes me somewhat confused about the comment that Titan couldn't support life. We've known the atmosphere is methane for...forever. I will blame it on crazy news people and be content tho.

I guess the media are in a bind on that one. Do they assume everyone listening to the item knows about Titan and just tell us the new stuff? Or do they have to quickly educate everyone in the 30 sec grab? Probably No.2.  Electronic media debate, etc.

Unless of course we found life that could breathe methane.
