Nowadays, I only allow myself a doughnut once or twice a year, but when I have one, it's Custard Filled with Chocolate Icing.

How fortunate we are to be surrounded by beauty *and* taste.  :)

On topic: I really don't see this problem though. I mean, as long as everyone doesn't go to the Starbucks, things can't go wrong.
Will my city become bland and lose its individuality?
See my concern?

Well it really can't be all that individual, because I've never even of the city until just now.  :P (or yesterday anyway)

Discharger/Dosh/Echani: I don't think most people have heard of anyone here, but we're still all individuals. You appear to be confused about the meaning of the word "individual". It has absolutely nothing to do with "famous".

Bons: I've never had anything from Starbucks that I've liked, but I don't particularly hold that against them; everyone can't have the same taste, after all. (Yes, I have tasted dirt. Playing outside all summer, every summer, from age 3 to age 16, leads to many interesting experiences.) I'm glad they do good things internationally, but I like thriving local communities, and Starbucks doesn't help with that.

Maybe I overlook something, but I think it was me, not Eral  :)

Before such activity meant moving up another dress size, I ate more than my share of the things. Never eaten a Krispy Kreme, though. There are none perceptible to me here. I'm with Cliffette on the spelling though. I've spent a significant portion of my adult life trying to teach children how to spell, and I wouldn't be able to darken the door.

Echani, although your statement would no doubt upset me if I worked in the Tourism industry, the fact that people haven't heard of Melbourne is part of the reason I like it. It's only Sydneysiders who crave international recognition and ridiculously high house prices. ;)

St.Josephine you speak in mysterious tongues. A long john wouldn't be an Italian cannoli, would it?

Echani.. Echani is my name. And anyway, I interpreted Eral's meaning as famous instead of individual, because I thought that was what he meant. I'm more then likely wrong, but whatever.

Eral: That's good point, too many tourist would add alot of chains (McDonalds, even more SB's, etc.)

I thought you were able to abstain from from Those Things Which Taste Good But Are Very Bad For You. Knowing it is merely you like things of a higher standard than mere doughnuts, see my second comment, "I am relieved."

Oops, sorry. Temporary brain short-circuit. At least I hope it was temporary.

Dosh: Not hearing of Melbourne is pretty amazing in and of itself. "It can't be all that individual, because I've never heard of it." Hm. "Individual" is certainly what you wrote. And looking under Eral's name, as well as at her forum posts, I do believe she is a she.

Hmph. The latter is merely a side-effect of the former. And why should we crave what we already have? ;)

(PS - I am mainly full of wind, as I would move to Melbourne at the drop of a hat... I love that city, despite its lack of harbour and golden beaches... if only all my loved ones would come down with me.)

As for the coffeehouses - I'm with Bons. As long as people like you exist, they too will exist. I assume that the people running it are in it for the society and as a labour of love, more than as a means to a stream of cash.

'Leave me alone' requires at least two participants, and sometimes agitation can be difficult or even impossible to avoid. Hurrah. For the sake of topic, coffee is evil. It galls me that the franchises so frequently attempt to expunge culture, in this instance culinary. Why can't they be content catering to the teeming masses of lowest common denominators?  :-\

I wouldn't know, never having experienced them.  :(

I like coffee on occassion. Unfortunately, it induces one of two states in me: awake FOREVAR or immediate crash. So I generally stick with hot chocolate or tea at coffee shops.

I once had this gross coffee syrup type thing, which you were supposed to squirt into milk and drink that way.  Now, I'm not entirely lactose intolerant, but for some reason I can't drink milk unless it's seriously diluted, so yeah, I took a sip of this stuff, and knew the milk would make me sick.  What did I do then?  Oh, I just squirted in a bunch more of the syrup.  It was a brilliant plan that could not fail!  I used to do it all the time with chocolate milk as a kid, so coffee should be just the same.

Yeah right.

Anyways, I wound up with some pretty freaky heart palpitations going on, and had to sit down for a while before going to work.  I also drank a lot of water to try and dilute it, but didn't feel terribly good all morning.  Needless to say, I chucked that coffee syrup in the garbage next time I saw it.

St.Josephine you speak in mysterious tongues. A long john wouldn't be an Italian cannoli, would it?

Nope, a cannoli is a cannoli and is filled with ricotta cheese.  A long john is just a rectangular-shaped donut and is topped with some sort of frosting (it can be filled or not.)  Kinda like an eclair but not quite.   :)

Yes, I am a donut expert (which, now that I think about it, is strange since I don't eat them all that often.)  Bear claws, anyone?
