Problem with First NPC (Following tutorial)
« on: November 19, 2004, 01:38:07 PM »
Hello all. I've been trying to learn to make a new NPC. I thought the best way
would be to use Ghreyfain 's tutorial so I can get something working straightaway
and then slowly change it to what i want to create. So I copied and pasted all the
files.

Anyway I copied Ghreyfain's guide exactly, except that in the area baf I used
AR0602 (first dungeon) instead of AR1000, and I set the co-ordinates to the room
with the golem in it.

IF
Global("J#VondoExists","AR0602",0)
THEN
RESPONSE #100
SetGlobal("J#VondoExists","AR0602",1)
CreateCreature("J#Vondo",[3133.2829],3)
END

Also I created a normal character in BG2 and exported it. Then I opened it with
NearInfinity, but I didn't know what to set the Death variables and scripts (the
tutorial mentions assigning a script, but there are around 4 or 5 different script
entries) so i left it as it is. I then exported it with Ni but used the CRE file
extension. I copied the tp2 file from the tutorial and made both the weidu EXE and
the tp2 file as Setup-VondoTheNPC

Anyway the problem is, as soon as I enter the room the NPC is supposed to be in,
the game throws me back to the desktop (although the BG2 exe is still running in
the background). And i always start a new game when trying out any new changes.

I read another similar post here in which the poster was recommended to change the
Death Variable to a name, so i set it as "Vondo". Still no luck though.

Can anyone help?

You need to use NI to convert the .chr to .cre.  Just saving it with the .cre extension won't work, since there's different info at the top of the file in a .chr.

Oh right. Can you tell me exactly where the option is? I can't see any button or command saying to export as a CRE. I am using NI 1.32 and when I open the CHR it opens in a new Window, I press the Edit tab and the only buttons not greyed out are: add, find, print, export, save. Export just saves as a CHR.

Browse to the Characters tree, that should keep the option from graying out.

DLTCEP is far, far better for making creatures, IMO.
