Tales of Fracture
« on: October 14, 2004, 06:15:29 PM »
Many tales are told of mighty warriors performing heroic or villainous deeds, or of powerful magi bending reality to their wills. Yet seldom are the less glorious tales narrated: tales of faliure, of regret, and of downright despair. This is one such tale, brought to light that readers may ponder upon the lessons to be learned, and the infamy-- or lack thereof, of the characters involved.

It is told that since the dawn of time had existed a sinister organisation known only as "The Founders", led by an equally mysterious figure, renowned for his ruthlessness. Rare now that the name of this leader is invoked, and much for the better. Regardless, little more is known, save that The Founders were a bastion of goodness, and a symbol of purity feared and hated by the heathen outcasts. Any further detail is lacking, for those who spoke ill of The Founders or their leader were swiftly disposed of. While regarded by many as extreme, such measures were accepted as fair sacrifice, for without them The Founders, and with them all that was good, were doomed.

Naturally, The Founders did not stand unopposed: they suffered and survived many a rebellion. Communities even more sinister and reportedly twisted with corruption clung within the shadow of their glory. In one particular brutal and bloody rebellion, the very collective heart of The Founders was fractured. The leader himself found a knife planted in his back by his most trusted of servants. The Founders were severely weakened, but struggled onwards, as they had always.

It is here that we meet the most despicable of characters: a nameless mercenary, seeking only his own gain, who would pass from community to community-- like a common street-whore it is said. Once a trusted servant of the leader, he was seduced by the Dark Lord risen from the ashes of the fractured heart of The Founders, twisted beyond recognition into something less-than-human. Now, he is known only by his striking crainial adornments, rumoured to inspire fear within the very hearts of his foes. Long did this vile creature dwell in the midst of The Founders; his true colours were revealed well before their ultimate demise, but in their weakened form, The Founders found him simply unstoppable.

That The Founders would slip into insignificance was an inevitability. As they crumbled away, so too did all that was good and true, and darkness swept across the land. But as can be seen on countless occasions throughout history, even evil does not mix with evil. There were conflicts within the newfound domains, which brought with them countless new gatherings of even more horrific and vile evils. Similar creatures banded together: some endeavoured to recreate The Founders, arguably with significant success; a trio of marauding gargantuans roamed the land, consuming any unfortunate victims in their path; the fate of the nameless warrior is unknown. Some believe that he ascended to another plane of existance, coaxed by the Dark Lord and a select few other minions. The truth, alas, shall never be known.

And so, all that the leader had worked to create was, over time, fractured and eroded, crumbling to the dust from whence it came. Know this as a lesson, readers, for naught is eternal; even those close to you will come to crush all that you hold dear.
