A Question of class
« on: October 10, 2004, 04:52:10 PM »
Sorry if this forum was for technical stuff and this isnt the right kind of topic for this forum but im looking for some suggestions

I have this npc I have been working on for about a month now but while playing baldurs gate 2 with him he didnt seem right. The cleric part made me think of him more as a priest then just a healer.

Hes like strider out of lord of the rings in that he knows of the wild and about tracking.

Hes a half elf who grow up round only the elf. which gives him his healing abilitys.so I think I will need to try and learn to give im just the inate abilitys other then a full class. So he can just be a ranger for now. Other then a cleric/ranger.

any thoughts on class? if i should stick with cleric ranger or ranger with some special inate ability?

Given that elves have no special healing abilities...why would he have healing abilities?

Sounds like a druid to me. But without more info on his background and personality, it's hard to tell. If you want him to be a healer through nature, druid's the way to go. Innate healing abilities, though? That's something else entirely.

When he was younger they would make fun of him because he was half human and because he couldnt see as well as them in the dark so they used to hurt him real bad. The elfs can be crual when they want to be. So hes had to protect himself and in doing so tot himself to heal.

a little more info is on my forum but i dont get any replys proparly cause theres so many other npc out there or hes not that interesting yet

I think for the elves tarnishing their race is even nastier than being a dwarf or human. So I think he would have a pretty tough time among the purebloods.

Strider is anything but a cleric, but the ranger idea is different when Tolkien uses it IMO.

Yea he did have a rough time but he knows how to take care of himself now.

Tolkiens rangers are differnt but i only used strider as a example cause Tallon knows about the wild and tracking and he grow up with elfs personality wise hes more like a smug charmer in the group. The only why i know how to put it is think Alec out of Dark Angel or Lt brodie out of seaquest.

Sorry im kinda getting of subject here what do you all think of class someone on another forum suggested a custom kit because the cleric healing powers were to high for him.

i think i know what you're after.  how about an innate ability, similar to jan's create bruiser mates, that creates sort of a more powerful and longer lasting goodberries, but only when he's in the wilderness.  you'll need an item, two spells, and a script.

the first spell would be applied at level 1 and would simply give him innate spell 2.  this is also a good place to put in any other kit effects.

when the innate is cast, it sets a local variable to 1.  that sets off the script which checks to make sure he's in the wilderness and not in a city or dungeon etc and no enemies nearby.  if he's not, the script can display "doesn't work here" or whatever.  if he is, it sets the variable back to 0 and creates ATHELAS.itm in his inventory.

you can make more than one item (and corresponding additions to the innate according to min level required) so that early on it only heals hp's, but later can cure disease, blindness, level drain, etc.

the rest of this post are just some ideas; ignore them at your leisure:

he's definitely a ranger, but disable his spellcasting entirely.
use stalker for unusables as i never recall him wearing any type of heavy armor.
give him an innate like "Inspire Party" that casts a combination of chant and remove fear.
he should be immune to panic/fear, and possibly to charm/domination as well, though that could come at later levels.
at higher levels, he should gain some powers over undead, maybe summon zombie warriors.
