Installation Questions
« on: September 27, 2004, 06:10:21 PM »
I've tried several times to install tutu but I kept getting a message that I need the new patch for BG2. I downloaded the patch but it didn't load because I already have ToB installed and apparently I don't need it. I checked the config file and everything there is in the right place and I've re-installed BG1 as a full install, etc. The other problem is now BG2 doesn't work at all. Thanks in advance if anyone can figure this out.

When you downloaded the patch, was it the Shadows of Amn patch, or the Throne of Bhaal patch?

I installed the ToB patch but now I'm getting something saying "chitin.cpp at line number 1628" and the game won't start. Sorry if this question has been asked before but I'm not sure how to fix this.
Thanks.

Did you install the ToB patch after running the Tutu converter?  That's not a good thing.  I hate to say it, but you'll have to restore your BG2 install, install all the patches for all the games you have installed, run the converter, then install the fixpack.

Thanks for the help. I re-installed and re-patched everything and got BG1 working. I never finished it the first time so I'm psyched to start up again.

Now that JRS's problem is solved, I have a separate installation question.  Is there any way to play without the cd in the drive?  A friend of mine came over and wanted to network play with me on my second computer but it won't let me have it running on both computers without the TOB cd in each.

Well, having it installed on two computers when you only bought it once is, y'know, stealing and stuff, so I can't help you there.

How is that stealing?  I own the game and there is nothing in the license.txt that says I can't have it installed and running on two of my own home computers.  I'm not trying to copy the disc or anything else that's prohibited under the license.

It is, actually, since you only paid to give one person enjoyment at a time.  If you're playing it on two computers, then two people are enjoying themselves for the price of one.  That just will not stand.  Heheheh.

So you wouldn't let your spouse or kids play it on your computer when you're at work?  Only the person it was purchased for is allowed to play it?  I think that's a little overboard don't you think?

A different example is if I was playing a DVD movie, and I had one copy of the disc in a player and was distributing the signal to more than one TV in my house at the same time.  That's perfectly legal.  The same thing with software.  Some software has a license agreement that restricts you from using it on multiple computers at the same time.  Microsoft Office is a good example because the license agreement says that you are only allowed to install it on a single computer plus a portable computer.  Because you agree to the license during the installation you are legally bound by any restrictions they chose to include regarding it's use.  However the TOB license has no such restrictions.  I don't see anything that would restrict it's use for what I'm trying to do.  Both of my computers are set up side-by-side in the same room and I simply thought it would be fun to do a multiplayer session with a friend in a way that was legal (i.e. without making a copy of the disc).

Hey, I'm not on a crusade or anything, so let's not get craaaazy here.  And furthermore, you actually read the license agreement for ToB? :D  I think my remark about not getting crazy was too late.

But anyways, I'm tired and cold and hungry, so I'm going to prematurely end this post having said little to nothing of relevance to the topic at hand.

Yes I did read the license and I still don't see any restrictions prohibiting what I wanted to accomplish.  I was just wondering if there were an INI setting for it but evidently there isn't any such feature.

The obvious solution is simply to make a cd image backup of your own game disk... You are allowed to make a backup for your own protection of anything you own.  What you do with it... is your business.  Or you could just buy a second copy... it shouldn't be that expensive.  $15-20 maybe?  That's what I would do... then again, I actually like the game.

BG2-ToB also runs with the SoA-CD 2 in the drive.
