You might have a bit of a wait on your hands, Wes is finally on the vacation we thought he was on a couple of months ago.

I believe he said it's more like a month. What did you need?

Informally you can get started without discussing it. The WeiMorph code base is GPL open source and is included in the WeiDU distribution.

If you come up with additional builds, I can certainly help you work out a place to house them.

Well then, from this day forth IWG2 is being worked on and coordinated by icelandismine and DevilishPope!

Until you can coordinate any code changes with Weimer, you might call it something else in the meantime to indicate that it's your changes, your support, etc.

IcelandGate2 or something like that. :)

This does beg the question... do either of you guys know ocaML, or are you learning, or what?

Ermm....
WTF is OcaML? We know WeiDU, and we can pick up really easily on scripting and dialog. Is that enough?

ocaML is the programming language WeiDU/WeiMorph were created in.

It's certainly possible to improve on a WeiMorph creation using just WeiDU .d/.tp2 tasks (see the BG1Tutu Fixpack and Tweakpack) but to make deep changes in IWG2 you would need to look at the rule sets the converter uses (which are defined in text files) or possibly at the code of the converter itself, which is written in the aforementioned ocaML.

And of course, you jump the gun and don't bother to evaluate the situation and perhaps have some chitchat with Weimer first, since he's the Godfather of all Modern Infinity Engine Mods (I am referring to WeiDU)  ::)
Even further so, we don't even have weimers permission to use his intellectual property yet, so all we can do for now is small bugfixes and scripting fixes at the most.

We should definetely wait for his "yay" or "nay", as we may be in over our heads ;)

Like I explained, WeiDU/WeiMorph code is governed by the terms of the GPL, which is fairly permissive all things considered, and worth a look if you don't understand it.

And the fact that he said the whole thing is open...

And we can always start, and just not release it if he says neigh.

I always said I would put WeiDU on sourceforge (or somesuch) -- now is perhaps the time.

You guys are welcome to branch development off and try to improve things. If you do end up making any changes to the source or the configuration files and I don't have public WeiDU CVS up, just send me your diffs and I'll incorporate them. Or you can make your own binary distro and I can put a link to it in the pages.

Aside from learning OCaml (http://www.ocaml.org/) you should probably talk to the bg1tutu people about how easy (or not) it was to work with "weimorph". BG1->BG2 required fewer weidu-source-code changes than iwg2 will, but their experience will probably prove invaluable to you (or other would-be maintainers) in the long run.

Any chance of seeing BG1 or IWD1 being converted to the IWD2 engine?

Any insight on how difficult this would be compared to BG2->IWD2?

BG1->IWD2 would be similarly tricky.

IWD1->IWD2 would be easier because they share more scripting in common, but I still wouldn't recommend holding your breath.

I experimented with it and got a skeletal Easthaven working in the IWD2 engine.

would probably be the easiest conversion to make.  All you would really need is:
* automated code to update the areas and hack the chitin.key
* remade / converted, non-monster, NPCs
* some store tweaking (although you really could just re-use the IWD2 ones)
* automated dialog and [some] script conversion.

as IWD2 reuses and/or updates most all of the IWD1 content.

That sounds promising. Would take me sometime to learn all the stuff if I were to do it myself, though.

Hope someone does that.  ;D

IWD1->IWD2 sounds like a great idea, I'd be willing to help in any way on such an endevour even if its just testing.

I know I have ESL problems here, but isn't the thread title odd?

not in the EFL world of advice/fan columns.  but it is ported from paper-based periodicals rather than something that should necessarily look natural 'on the web'... :-\
