Let's say I want to change Aataqah's short name only to "Genie", what's wrong with this code?

Much more luck, yes. Do NAME2 as well for good measure.

The difference between the two names in a creature file - one is used for the tooltip name, the other is used for the dialog name.

See, I actually want them to be different. Like it was in IWD: you walk up to the innkeeper, the tooltip simply says "Innkeeper", but if you talk to her it shows her name (Grisella). I'll be doing this with a number of creatures in BG2, in an attempt to break the old CRPG tradition that "the named NPCs are the important ones". Also, which name is used in the battle text?

I haven't heard of anyone actually trying to find out, so you'd be better off testing it out and reporting back to everyone else.

Well, I went through part of the creature list (the As and Bs) and converted their short names to more generic lines... Anyone want to beta-test it for me? (My installation of BG2 is too dodgy for me to play it anymore  )
