Research assignments
« on: June 25, 2004, 02:33:53 PM »
Current dialog.tlk string research assignments:
Barren34000-40125
Regullus40126-46250
MERLANCE46251-52375
SixOfSpades52376-58500
BevH58501-64625
Bibbi64626-70750
Eltharodo70751-76880

Just post whatever weird strings you come across, and we'll try to track down if they are indeed used in-game or not.  Also, there is no rush, so go at your own pace.  Do, however, let us know how far you've managed to dig into the file every now and then.  If you get tired of the work or no longer have time for it, just let us know and we'll either divvy out what you have left, or recruit someone else to complete the assignment.

Remember, don't be afraid to post anything that looks odd.  Even for those people who've been through the games a dozen or more times, there still may be a line that, when seen out of context, looks odd.  Better safe than sorry.  :)

Now, on that note, I'll start sending out the assignments.  :)

Thanks, again!

Looking good so far.  Icelus, what copy of the game does this come from?  Are there any mods installed?  Only, all over the place there are references to the Solaufein Romance.  Also, in the lines around 76670-76714 and beyond, there looks like new Thieve's guild quests.  However, I also know there is an improved thieves guild mod out there.  Are those lnie UB or part of extended thieves guild mod?

Cheers,

Um... oops.  I thought the master file was from an unmodded game.  Sorry about that.
@74106 *should* be the last, unmodded line in a SoA/ToB install.  Just read up to that point.

OK, just as an FYI to the researchers:

It may be awhile before Barren or I or whoever gets a chance to check out some of the odd dialog strings.  If any of you have access to NearInfinity, there is an easy (though not always foolproof) way to determine if a string is used and where.

1) In NI, go to Search-->StringRef...
2) Type the string number in the box that says StringRef:
3) Hit enter, and see if the dialog that appears matches that which you're checking
4) Click the Find References button
5) Leave all boxes checked and hit Search
6) Press OK if any errors popup (many files are referenced in the chitin.key file, but do not actually exist, such as files used during Bioware game testing)
7) You should then get a new window that shows what files contain that string, if any.  You can double-click on the file(s) if you need further information

by the way, do you want us to post the empty dialogue spaces or not?  i guess they aren't much use to us, but is there a way of tracking down what the files were, or are they completely erased from the dlg?

I wouldn't bother with those, no.  Even if we knew where they went, it probably wouldn't do us much good if the dialog is gone.  :(

Here's my question: You do the above and then what are you looking for?

Now I did the above with several different strings and they all had files, except for Ferg Patoo, even the Haer D'alis sequence had a file, what I took to be test talk had files, etc.

Stupid question I am sure but I don't know what type of file or evidence I supposed to be looking for? Also, how do you want a report? Forinstance, Ferg Patoo, no file found, or Imoen string#*****, found in .tlk?

Yeah, it's something I didn't take into consideration.  The problem with doing an NI search is that, though it may find the string used in a file, that doesn't mean the file is necessarily used in the game.

So, for now, just ignore the NI procedure unless there's something that you think looks kinda familiar and doing a NI search may help jog your memory.  I'd rather have too many findings to double-check than not enough.  :)

Sorry for the confusion.  :(

I'll let you know.  I think a few people have finished, but there are a couple of people who have not checked in yet.  Thanks for the offer, and I'll put you on standby.  :)

That, and schoolwork. Ill get it done! I promise! Maybe by this weekend.

No hurry.  But there are one or two people that haven't posted anything, so I don't know if they're still on the project, or just waiting until they've completed it to post their findings.

I am still on the job. My free time has been spent trying to figure out why the game was not working correctly and trying to install. One problem is fixed and the other? I wanted to check some stuff with NI again. Within the next couple of days.

No worries, you two.  I know you've both already done a lot, and I do appreciate that.  There's no hurry, and you both have checked in already, so, again--thanks.  :)

OK, I'm going to do my best to get the bulk of the work done for UB13 this weekend, so a new release should be out a few days afterward (I need to give the translators time to translate a few things).

After that, I'm going to try and organize some of the things you guys have found in your research.

If you could all do me a favor and let me know if a) you've finished your range of strings, or b) how far you've gotten, I'd really appreciate it.

Also, Barren... I've not seen anything posted by you about your chunk of the dialog.tlk.  Have you been able to do any of it?
