one request.

Could you have one of the voice actors say Nalia's last name. I'd like to know how it sounds exactly. As far as I can tell no one voices her last name in the normal game.
Now, at last, the masks had fallen away.  The strings of the puppets had become visible, and the hands of the prime mover exposed.  Most ironic of all was the last gift that Raziel had given me, more powerful than the sword that now held his soul, more acute even than the vision his sacrifice had accorded me - the first bitter taste of that terrible illusion:  Hope.

Hadn't occurred to me, but sure, that seems reasonable.

I think you could also be justified in making it sound like D'arnise...

I am far from a French speaker, but I would think the two vowels would blend, and make one syllable...similar to the D'artagan from Three Musketeers fame

That's sort of funny, too, since I would've sworn I'd seen de'Arnise spelled d'Arnise in the game, as if it actually was french.  And yeah, my inclination is to pronounce it as such.

You could also decide not to have it pronounced in the mod and have everyone continue to pronounce it the way they want too.

If the name of the family was de'Arnise in the classical sense, would that not make it the Arnise hold?

On reflection, the castle would likely have the same name as the ruling family.  The region that made up the Keep's holdings would be called Arnise.

i think it's actually Dee-ar-neese.  It would only be Darnise if it was spelt d'arnise.

This is true. That is if we're following french pronunciation rules. But I think it would be more of a "day" than a "dee" sound.

I've always assumed De'Arnise was a spelling error, because in French you can't have an e next to an a. Or so Mme Simmons always told me. (It's not like it's the first time there was a spelling error in a game.) De just means of, but indicates status, old families had de in their names. Simone de Beauvoir was always proud of her de. So Arnise is the family name- and it would be pronounced Darnise. IMO.

This discussion may not even be relevant. Do they even speak french in the FR?

julwise, relevant? Relevant? Wash out your mouth! :o
As a proud contributor to the 8 page Romance in Gaming post, I am stunned you even use the word!
They call it first class blather for a reason you know.( I realise this isn't EFCB, but the thought's the same.)
Besides, since FR isn't REAL, they can and do use any language they like.

I thought this particular discussion did have a goal though... That goal being trying to decide how to pronounce "de'Arnise." And, although I'm not a D&D-er, I know the FR have certain races with cultural rules, norms, and languages. However, I don't know if French is one of them. :)

julwise, you're scaring me.
It's FR, not the Silmarillion. They've culled from many different cultures I imagine. Have you listened to Saemon Haevarian?
It may be that the language has been created with the same (lunatic) devotion that Tolkien gave to elvish, but with names spelled like De'Arnise, I don't think so. I don't think they had that sort of production time.
I'm just giving you my guess. French-based, Darnise.
Someone else might be right.  :D

Well just because Bioware did it doesn't mean it's "canon."

My guess would be they just thought De'Arnise sounded neat and decided to go with that.

No kidding, I think it'd be safest just to keep the pronunciation of the name out of it and let the player decide. I know I would've been happier if the movies hadn't ruined my Harry Potter name pronunciations. :P

I had a friend who misread Hermoine (or however you spell the girl's name) as Hemroid once.

In pnp there's an "Arnise Hold".  Since it's location is roughly where the BG2 "De'Arnise Keep" is, I'm guessing they're one and the same.
