The BGII Symbol
« on: May 22, 2004, 10:12:16 AM »
Is their any meaning to the BGII symbol, the one with the two heads? The BG1 symbol means Bhaal, but I see no reason for this symbol.

IIRC the top, golden part is the official crest of Amn, while the bottom, darkened part is it's shadow - playing into the title, "Shadows of Amn".

I always thought the head on top was supposed to be Ellesime and the bottom one Matron Mother Whatshernameagain. Which wouldn't exclude the shadow theme, I suppose.

Well, it's hardly her fault that she's killed by a plot device before she has any chance to become a major character  ::)

(if the design is based on the crest of Amn, that's obviously the official answer. I'm not trying to argue that, I'm just interested in symbols and how they can have more meanings than just the "official" one)

If it is indeed the crest of Amn, then it probably depicts the goddess Waukeen.

I always thought it is a symbolic representation of the duality of the protagonist, since in a way the gam eis geared tpowards the good character who combats his dark heritage blah, blah, blah...  ;)

That's what I thought. The good or the dark side that you can choose.

Aren't there any books that depict what it really means?

The BG2 novel maybe?  That'd mean the bottom one is Bodhi and the top one is Imoen and they're gettin' it on.  Or was it Phaere and Imoen?  I forget, but anyways, this post isn't so much constructive input towards the topic as a jab at how bad the novels were, so it's not like accuracy really matters. :)

Yeah... why are the BG novels always end up being so shitty. Those writers prolly get frustrated the second they see the game, then ask someone like me about the story line... Man...

Nevermind what it means, it's pretty and I wanted to have it as a tattoo, but Jason didn't want to allow it  :)

Despite the obvious retort, I always though it was the two aspects of Melissan, protector and nemisis of the Bhaalspawn.

I know that it seems strange to use a Melissan theme to brand SoA ut I didn't make the choice.

I really, really hope they didn't plan ToB so far ahead that they could make Melissan the logo for SoA.  Then they wouldn't even be able to use the excuse "but we were in a rush" for how bad ToB is.

ToB was that bad.  It sucked on toast.  Possibly burned toast.

TOB had some good things..........high level abilities, higher experience cap, some epic battles, more items, Sarevok as an NPC (although some people despise SarevoK), but yeah if I could change a lot of things about it I would in a second

Now back to the BGII SoA symbol.......it does make sense if you think about the dual-nature of the PC and so it's only logical if the symbol represents this at least on the surface.....in terms of the main story there isn't much of a difference whether your good, neutral or evil :)

When I say always, I mean of course once I'd met Melissan and learnt that she had two aspects. :)

I'm sure they new they werre going to do a part II for SoA from the first day they spent money on SoA.

Heh, seems like everyone has their own theory. I always thought the bottom part had something to do with the underdark. It makes sense as Amn's shadow, though. I wouldn't think it's Melissan, TOB goes back to the Bhaal logo. Does it look like Melissan? *loads up game to inspect*

Could be.......but in terms of the "Shadows" of Amn I'm more inclined to associate it with the vampires and the shadow thieves in the game..... :)
