Yes, it is true. Not all of us can think up a poem that describes the darkness within at the drop of a hat.  Not all of us are even poets on any level. So how does that work when we want our favorite drow to spew some verse in a dialogue or flirt? That's where this thread comes in.

If you either write a poem, or read a poem (or even lyrics...I don't think it matters) that you can imagine Sola reciting in a given situation, why not post it here with your thoughts on it? Of course, only if you're willing to let others use your poetry...and I guess for legal purposes, cite if the work isn't yours.

EDIT: Please ignore my stupid misusage of "here" in place of "hear"...I'm tired.

I for one can definitely hear Sola reciting either Emily Dickenson or Robert Frost. Both are very dark IMHO. Also, if the PC is a male, I can definitely hear some Walt Whitman in there.

One problem is that if we cite an easily recognizable poem, it will make the scenario seem like FR-ish. Hm...

Well how about we find good modern online poetry. Ask the authors for special permission an all that. Then we could have good poetry that most people don't know of. Like my sig. for example that's how I got it. B)

What I did as a part of Valygar's mod was using the period poetry (13-15 century) which is relatively unknown and adds flavour.  :)

You'd be amazed at how little-known even some of the most famous poets are!  Take the lines below my title, for instance.  Well-known Hamlet stuff.  But what about this?

My words rise up.  My thoughts remain below.
Words without thoughts never to heav'n go.

Or this?

For I have sworn thee fair, and thought thee bright,
Who art as black as hell, as dark as night.

(The above is one of my absolute favorites.  Full poem to be quoted upon request.)

Or even this?  (Though is likely to be recognized by some of the romantics out there!  Not Romantics, but that's another story!)

These violent delights have violent ends
And in their triumph die, like fire and powder
Which as they kiss consume.

Let me know if you want more of this kind of stuff.  I use some of it (not these quotes yet!) in my own mod, but hey, he's out of copyright!  Let's all quote!!!  :D

Heh. I was playing and one of Sola's banters with Immy came up. He recited a poem about hope, and I said (IRL) "Hey! That's the Emily Dickinson poem we read in English!"

Speaking of which, I did a project on a French poet named Yves Bonnefoy. Not very well known to Americans, so if we put in some of his translated works...?

Passer-by, these are words. But instead of reading
I want you to listen: to this frail
Voice like that of letters eaten by grass.

Lend an ear, hear first of all the happy bee
Foraging in our almost rubbed-out names.
It flits between two sprays of leaves,
Carrying the sound of branches that are real
To those that filigree the still unseen.

Then know an even fainter sound, and let it be
The endless murmuring of all our shades.
Their whisper rises from beneath the stones
To fuse into a single heat with that blind
Light you are as yet, who can still gaze.

May your listening be good! Silence
Is a threshold where a twig breaks in your hand,
Imperceptibly, as you attempt to disengage
                 A name upon a stone:

And so our absent names untangle your alarms.
And for you who move away, pensively,
Here becomes there without ceasing to be.

Another time.
It was still night. Water slid
Silently on the black ground,
And I knew that my only task would be
To remember, and I laughed,
I bent down, I took from the mud
A pile of branches and leaves,
I lifted up the whole dripping mass
In arms I held close to my heart.
What to do with this wood where
The sound of color rose from so much absence,
It hardly mattered, I went in haste, looking for
At least some kind of shed, beneath the load
Of branches that were full of
Rough edges, stabbing pains, points, cries.

And voices that cast shadows on the road,
Or called to me, and, my heart beating fast,
I turned around to face the empty road

^_^ He's a surrealist, in case you were wondering.

Here's a poem I liked and thought it would go good with Solaufein. You now how Hare daleis (can't spell) calls you raven. What if Solaufein called you shadow. Oh my shadow are you all right  .  This is by Adam Gibbs and can be found at the fantastic poems link.

Shadow
If it won't leave me alone it's no surprise that I'm shrill
but to no avail, my shadow follows me still.
When sunlight reveals my frown, that only fills it with glee.
Yet on a moonlit night it never fails to locate me.
Until my shadow appears the only thing that is true
appearing in a flash on any wall within view.

But increasingly I realise that it is pleasing after all
to have such a constant companion, then I recall
that the only times my shadow has left me alone
have been the darkest times that I have known.
And so it fills me with delight to have my shadow about
for it completes my world, without a doubt.

Yah! :D
So he would say this poem to you and I'd have to writ additonal dialog with him calling you shadow. And I think shadow is romantic not gloomy.

Well, I like the poem, but I don't think 'shadow' as a pet name is appropriate. A shadow is a weaker copy of something, with no will of its own. Just follows the person around silently. The PC is more like the sun to Sola; s/he was the one who guided him out of the Underdark, physically and emotionally.

You've got a good point Tenma. The cruddy thing is I already wrote the first ascociated flirt for this. If you have any suggestions on another poem with a nickname. I would really apreciate it. That goes for everyone.

Or you can always add a branch into your flirt where the PC asks about the 'shadow' reference. Then Sola could explain what he meant by it, so the PC would understand it was intended as a compliment.
Just a random idea. :)

you don't even have to disguise the references: don'tforget that sola comes with a book of poems he liked. so nothing prevents him from quoting a poem, writen by someone else, that will go well with the situation.

of course if you can use the poem and slightly change it so that it goes with the PC, thats even better

*nods* We have had a couple of poems in the mod that were edited to sound more FR-ish. Poems don't necessarily need to stay in their original form.

Um, hey, I posted some Solaufein poetry over at the other boards, and they suggested that, if I wanted them included, that I come over here. This is something I just wrote on the spur-of-the-moment, but it seemed to fit the Solaufein we know.  :)

Anguish of a torment that I never left behind,
Tortures worse than knowledge saturated in my mind,
Lost recall from heaven's sigh as stars sing from the sky,
Wandering through a desert of broken memories left to cry

Weeping, I am lost and can no longer find myself,
Angered rage unknowing in the heart of this Dark Elf,
Yet still I love with passion what I've found on surface bright,
Yet still I'm hunted, hated, by those of surface and of night

How many times can I redeem myself to make my pureness whole?
Can they not accept me, my body AND my soul?
Oh life has fled to darkness that I cannot hope to find,
Seems love is met with hatred and the light is met in kind

Those that see me shrink back from the mere sight of my skin,
Never even thinking to look for my heart within,
Through their eyes I'm a demon, I'm a monster, I'm a blight,
So forever am I doomed to be a creature of the night

Hello Shadowhawke,
I love this one!  Correct me if I'm wrong, I saw your work on that other board that you mentioned, wasn't there another one that you had wriiten for Solaufein ? To my ear they sound like something Solaufein might have written or said. . . very nicely done! Hope they're included!  ;D

Note Please: Poem below belongs to Shadowhawke
Quote

"Darkness falls, yet still I wander through this world with joy,
Awakening the peace and love I thought had been destroyed,
Moonlight shines a tribute to your gentle, singing soul,
Awakening a fire within that burns as bright as coals

Shadowed dancing through the mists, revisiting as night,
To you, you are my heaven, my storm, my muse, my light,
Awakened from the darkness that my heritage has brought,
Reliving what I've always known and what I've always sought

In darkness wreathed, the stars shine bright from Eilistraee's midnight (sorry, can't spell!) hair,
And forever, I wish to drown in moonlight's wondrous stare,
Yet deep beneath I feel the stir of feelings warm and bright,
To you, you are my heaven, my storm, my muse, my light"

Hope you don't mind Shadowhawke ::) I snuck (spelling?) back to the old board and brought over that second poem I had aked you about above. . . I apologize if that wasn't the cool thing to do w/out your okay, my only excuse is that this one is my favorite one that you wrote for Solaufein. I wanted it to be seen, hopefully by the right people. . . (hides under computer desk in case of storm brewing. . . ) :-[

Heh, a flood of inspiration for no apparent reason.

Thou knowest of the sunlight and the sky that beckons blue?
Thou knowest of the golden bliss and words that breathe so true?
The surface life is painful yet is filled with words of fire,
Quenching, burning, drowning me in love and sweet desire

Thou knowest of the trees that sway in gentle wind's soft sigh?
Thou knowest of the grass that springs up tall to meet the eye?
Thou knowest of the river's song that spins up through the air?
Thou knowest of the waterfall that combs her silky hair?

And thou knowest of this darkling, the one that's gone astray,
Fighting hard and praying just to live another day,
Thou knowest that the surface now will always be my start,
And thou knowest that my love for thee will always warm my heart

What do you guys think? Sorry... spur-of-the-moment thing...  :)

OOOhhh, that's nice, :)  I can not write a line of poetry to save my lfe, but I enjoy sweet romantic verse, (especially from Solaufein). I wish I had such "spur of the moment" bits of inspiration! Sigh. . . at least you have your poetry a la Solaufein to keep you company until this mod-add-on is complete.  ;D

Again, nicely done. . .

i like the imagery in the first verse, but it does get increasingly sappy after that.
but my perspective is of someone who has consumed a large amount of poetry, written a very tiny amount, and not yet played the sola mod.
the lord of murder shall perish, yadda yadda yadda.
