Title: ambition dialogue, part 1
Post by: Kiki on January 05, 2003, 05:52:16 PM
This is a cut at the main dialogue flow. Side branches will be added (someday). Thanks to Lisa, Domi, and Doewen for inspiration; I borrowed some lines from an old thread.

------------------------

Solaufein: CharName, I have been thinking about the time that Bodhi captured me.

PC:
1. Hm, can't say that I remember that specific incident in all the chaos that follows in your wake.
2. Yes, I remember it rather well.
3. Seeing you change so dramatically was quite a shock at first. But I'm hardly one to talk, seeing as I have an unfortunate habit of becoming an avatar of Bhaal every now and then.

Solaufein: I am sorry that I caused you any pain, or any fear for either your safety or mine. At that point, we did not know each other well, and I cannot thank you enough for trusting me enough to restore me to life.

PC:
1. You were part of my party. You trusted me to lead you, and if I had never brought you to face Bodhi, you wouldn't have been her victim. I owed it to you to restore you if I could.
2. Bodhi was an incredibly powerful vampire, Solaufein, especially with the taint of Bhaal that she had from possessing Imoen's soul. I'm not sure anyone could have resisted her.
3. You have never given me cause to regret it, Solaufein.

Solaufein: Since coming to the surface, I had nearly forgotten the darker parts of my history, as I was no longer surrounded by treachery and hate. Bodhi found all my shadows, and marshaled them to further her purpose. I still have dreams about how I unleashed my new powers upon you and our other companions, and the feeling of horror when I realized that part of me, no matter how tiny, actually enjoyed it.

PC:
1. I have shadows in my own soul, Solaufein. I think I understand some of what you must feel.

Solaufein: We both have had to confront darkness and demons in our hearts. It is part of what draws me to you. Though you are not drow, you are mastering your own struggle against committing evil acts.

Solaufein: Bodhi reminded me of how corruptible the mortal soul is, a lesson I thought I had learned some time ago. But that is a conversation for another time. Let us talk now of happier things.

You'll be glad to see that not *all* of your lines end up in Imoen's mouth.

Thank you m'dear.   :)

Of course, it's not like Imoen could manage anything as serious as the conversation above.  Well, not without bursting into flame aftwarward anyway.

Recalling some of the Vamp-Solaufein dialog, it seemed like it was more than just a "tiny" piece of himself that enjoyed his new powers.   It's definitely a good topic for a dialog though and I like what you've written so far.  I'm interested in what you would write for the not-so-good PC response branches too.

I will look at the vamp dialogue again. In general, this will probably get reworked some, as the rest of the dialogues develop (one or two more).

Thanks! You mean, new options for non-good PCs, or responses to the smart-ass options?

I believe she means "replies other than those saying 'oh, sweetie, it wasn't YOUR fault.'"

Yes, that's pretty much what I mean.  I'm sure this dialog will be happening a while after the whole vampire business so possibly my PC would have cooled off by then, but her first inclination on restoring Solaufein was to rip him a new one rather than just tell him "well, these things happen."

OK, I see what you mean. If my PC were that pissed off, it is unlikely that she and Solaufein would even be having this conversation. :) For me, the Solaufein romance was already well advanced by the time we got to Bodhi, so I wasn't angry with him, I was angry with Bodhi.

As others have said, I think that the most effective place for what-the-hell-were-you-doing comments would be the Solaufein dialogue immediately following his resurrection. But I will be glad to suggest some of those options, for PCs who are still angry.

Wes may have an allergy to "forced fights" but I think there's plenty of room to have credible options in a romance track for someone to give a less-than-glowing endorsement.

Hmmm, yes but presumably you're writing this for more than just your PC?  It's not to say that my PC wouldn't forgive him, but she'd certainly want to vent on him first. :)  And for me, the Bodhi fight happened really early in the Solaufein romance, practically right after I picked him up.

:)  Your wish is my command. Here's one quick take of a possible branch:

Solaufein: CharName, I have been thinking about the time that Bodhi captured me.

PC:
4. Yes, I was pretty tempted to just leave you there to rot.

Solaufein: I ... see. Yes, I can understand that. We hardly knew each other, and it would have seemed like I was betraying you to one of your great enemies.

PC:
1. Damn right it seemed like betrayal.
2. It felt like you were deserting me for the winning team.

Solaufein: You do know that I was taken against my will, don't you?

PC:
1. Well, you seemed to enjoy it a little too much for that to be completely true. I have a hard time believing you had no choice in the matter.

Solaufein: Surely by now you know me better than that.

PC:
1. Maybe I do now ... but at the time I certainly didn't. You spent your whole life in the Underdark, after all. Bodhi offered you the kind of power that most drow would kill for.
2. Come on, Solaufein, don't you remember that little speech you gave me right before you leaped at my throat? It didn't exactly sound like you were fighting her thrall too hard.

Oooh, this is fun to write. And it's going to get us to the same setup for the ambition discussion as the sweet forgiving route. To be continued ...

new dialogue suggestion:

PC:

Weimer:
1. Kiki, this direction sounds fine, and it might be something I'd include in the mod. I'd like to see more.
2. God, this sucks. Solaufein would never stoop to this kind of discussion. Stop wasting your time on this.
3. This could be a good topic for a dialogue, but I'd suggest a different approach. Try this instead ...
4. (fill in the blank)

:)

Well, I for one would like to see Sola say something back. Something not as meek. He's a drow... and as we've seen with Phaere, he has a nasty streak. I don't think it should be a break up thing but a sharp reminder of the Slayer and such...

I would love to see some more agitated discussion... *emotions*! How about that:

************
PC: WOULD have? Soula, now, come, puh-lease, back once to earth!!! You actually DID betray me!!! [Optional: I have had Yoshimo, and he was at least honest enough to see things not so bloody simple as you, obviously!]

Soula: I... I thought you know that I was held under a powerful spell, like a dire charm spell -

PC:
1. You think that makes a difference to the fact itself? No? Stop *thinking* and start to *understand* you oaf! You, you.. (words go missing)
2. Yes, I know, but it´s still hard. Especially if you.. have feelings... they get hurt even if you know it´s different... it still hurts *now* hearing you talking so carelessly about it.

Soula:
ad 1.  ... I do not understand... I though you.. we...
ad 2.  May Eilistraee bless me for beeing an idiot! Please, accept my most sincere apologies... I ... can only say that -

PC: SHUT UP! +
1. ... Just shut up, you simple minded self-absorbed fool! I don´t want to hear.. -
2. ... Go and cast stoneskin! Make a poem, but leave me alone in future! All you love is yourself! [romance broken]
3. ... How about you *show* your caring about me, instead of philosophing about it with mere words?

Soula:
ad 1.  - Oh, please, am I this distant to you? (graps [charnames] shoulder, shakes [charname] lightly, takes [charnames] hands, what he manages after a short struggle): Look in my eyes, look *at* me and discard my careless rambling, please tell me you know my true feelings!
ad 2.  It is strange that we could agree on so much and still remain so distant from each others true self for all this time, as is now obvious. I again offer my apologies and I will trouble you no more.
ad 3.  (comes close, a very intensive, almost frightening fire in his glowing drow-eyes, touches lightly [Charname]´s cheek): I do.

PC: ad 1. and 3.
1. (lean towards him, shivering at the touch of his dark drow skin as he lays his arms around): I ... hope I know. Your way to analyse and discuss things so rationally makes me sometimes feel so... sad and lonely.
2. (start a first unsteady, then deepening smile while looking deep into his eyes, then holding his gaze for a long time)

Soula:
ad 1. (holds [charname] close for a long time ... whispers hoarsely): I am here... my love.
ad 2.  (unmoving for a moment, then a slow and rare smile on his lips, he whispers): I am so glad.
(Soulafein turns away, blinking eyes, pretenedly fasting some strap of his armor).

Weimerfein doesn't get irrationally angry, and I picture him as having a lot of patience, but I imagine that like anyone else, he has his limits to what he can take. I am contemplating pushing him that far, but the muse has temporarily abandoned me again and I'd like to know if my efforts might be used or adapted before I spend a lot of time working on this route.

I suppose so, but the man's gotta be a saint to grin and bare being yelled like this when the PC can go 'randomly' and at will become Miss/Mr Porcupine of Doom and kill all their loved ones.  :P

Anger can be firey (example, Anomen or Sarevok) or it can be icy cold (Irenicus). I see the pre-mask Sola (canon Solaufien) acting like fire but Weimerfien would be ice. Ice scares me the most.

But I really like Kaylord's suggestion! *looks hopeful to Kiki-sama* You might work with that suggestion, hopefully? ^_^

Well, what the hell, here's the rest of the venting dialogue. Solaufein has variations on some of his responses to some of the PC's options that are italicized, but because I'm lazy, those branches aren't more than one dialogue long. I hope the formatting isn't too confusing.

Thanks for inspiring some lines, Kaylord. And if anyone can tell me how to automatically indent text, I will be forever grateful.

-----------------------------

Solaufein: CharName, I have been thinking about the time that Bodhi captured me.

PC:
4. Yes, I was pretty tempted to just leave you there to rot.

Solaufein: I ... see. Yes, I can understand that. We hardly knew each other, and it would have seemed like I was betraying you to one of your great enemies. I can only apologize for the pain I caused --

PC:
1. Damn right it seemed like betrayal.
2. It felt like you were deserting me for the more likely winner. Not a big confidence booster.

Solaufein: Are appearances all that matter to you? You seem to forget that I was taken and held against my will.

PC:
1. Well, you seemed to enjoy it a little too much for that to be completely true. I have a hard time believing you had absolutely no choice about it.

Solaufein: Surely by now you know me better than that.
       I was trying --

2. I know that in my head--but you don't seem to understand how it made me feel.

Solaufein: I know I caused you pain. I cannot tell you how sorry
I am. We know each other so much better now--don't you know
       how much I regret --

PC:
1. Maybe I do now ... but at the time I certainly didn't. You spent your whole life in the Underdark, after all. Bodhi offered you the kind of power that most drow would kill for. Do kill for.

Solaufein: That is unfair, CharName. Do you truly think me like
other drow? Why are you refusing to understand? My own will
      was submerged beneath Bodhi's.

2. Oh, come on, Solaufein, don't you remember that little speech you gave me right before you leaped at my throat? It didn't exactly sound like you were fighting her enthrallment too hard.

Solaufein: CharName ... Bodhi *forced* me to become a vampire.
That was not the man you know and, I hope, love. Why are you
      refusing to understand?

PC:
1.  So you're telling me that not even a small part of you enjoyed it? Seems like that glitter in your eyes --

Solaufein: And are you entirely indifferent to the power that your sire's blood gives you? Think carefully before you accuse others of lust for power. Truly, you of all people should understand what it is like to struggle against the evil that your blood calls you to.

Solaufein: I do not mean to say that all drow are born evil; I do not believe that. But I know myself well enough to say that the depths of my soul have many a shadow. And Bodhi found them all, and harnessed them to her purposes. Look at me, look in my eyes, CharName--can you not tell my true feelings?

PC:
1. Sorry, Solaufein, but that just isn't convincing.

Solaufein: It ... it is strange that we could have experienced
so much together and yet know so little of each other's true
thoughts. I ... did not know how deeply this wound still
festered. I again offer my apologies for the pain I caused
--still seem to be causing--and I will trouble you no more.
      [dialogue and romance end]

2. Is that the best argument you can give me? I'm through with you. I was a fool to think a romance with a drow could ever work.

Solaufein: No more a fool than I was to think that a surfacer
could ever truly understand me. [dialogue and romance end]

3. You're right, I do have my own shadows to deal with. I ... think I understand at least a little, Solaufein.

Solaufein: We both have had to confront darkness and demons in our hearts. It is part of what draws me to you.

Solaufein: Bodhi reminded me of how corruptible the mortal soul is, a lesson I thought I had learned some time ago. But that is a conversation for another time.

PC:
1. I'm glad we cleared the air about this.
2. I still need to think about this some more, but I ... I'm glad we're together.

Solaufein: As am I, CharName.

For the benefit of those without photographic memories, could you post the entire dialogue please?

This new version is kind confusing, and without the other answers that you've already shown us to balance it, it makes the PC seem pretty bitchy.   :(
Title: ambition dialogue, part 1
Post by: Kiki on January 12, 2003, 03:26:09 PM
This is intended to be a standalone bitchy version of ambition dialogue #1. I can add some opportunities for a PC to get from the bitchy branch back to the original forgiving one, I suppose. But the PC I really had in mind for this branch was one who had been smoldering at Solaufein for quite some time (e.g., Kismet, Domi) and just wanted to let it all out.

So, the way I see the final version, there will be two routes to go, a forgiving one and a bitchy one. There will be chances in the first couple of dialogues of each route to get onto the other one, but after that, the PC's pretty much committed. To go back and forth between forgiving and pissed would be difficult to write and, in my experience, somewhat unrealistic.

This one's going to require quite the flowchart to figure out what's going on.

Well okey-dokey then!   B)

quite a flow chart, but easy enough codding, I think.  Just need to add a variable.   I have something like that, as almost the core of my mod.

Kaylord: Wow, that last bit was quite touching. You are a true romantic.
I don´t know what hit me... but I am fine again!  ;)

It´s just that many of the romance-discussions seem so damn sensible "american". Sort of "we can talk about everything in a rational and sensible way". Hmpf.

So I hope you all forgave me because in the last bit I turned Soula a bit "softy" ...

Go on! I am with you on the bitchy-part! After all, Soula needs some challenge to tackle!

I'm not against giving Sola a challenge or two (quite the contrary), it's just that not every PC would fit that second round of dialogue.  But, since (as Kiki pointed out) that second bit is not the whole picture... bitch away!   B)

PC:

You know what would be even cooler? Breaking up at that point and coming again together at a later point!

Technically, by allowing a force-talk option for the player, to restart the broken relationship. Soula wouldn´t move an inch. It has to be the player, making the amending step.

Now that would be great! The player can choose to break up, he can choose to restart after "cooling down"!

(Ups. I start clobbering Kiki with suggestions whereas Weimer would be the correct adress ... Hope Weimer reads that some day.)   :)

I totally agree, but, uh, another mod under development is already going to use that idea and since it's such a darn cool idea, perhaps we should give the new mod a chance to debut it?

Waiting for an unreleased mod to do something is a mistake, in my opinion, since many unreleased mods stay that way.

Kiki has advanced a notch in her CSoH training by sending me a D/TRA version of this ambition dialogue. It will be included in the next Sola release. I must say that I'm quite pleased with the "fiery" side of this dialogue. Normally I don't go for that sort of thing ... but it's fairly well-written here, and a number of people have said that they were mad at Sola after the vamping. Well done, everyone.

 If that's what it takes to get ahead in my training, I've probably hit a permanent plateau. Getting it into D/TRA wasn't hard, and didn't take any longer than doing a flowchart, but trying to compile it to see if it worked ... ugh. I managed to eliminate all of Solaufein's dialogues, proving that I was indeed tampering with the correct file but not in the right way.

Glad you liked it, Wes. And welcome back!

Yes, Leeza Bronte, there is a Weimer-claus.

It's kind of you all to miss me and make a great huzzah when I reappear, but now I feel that the burden is on me to make some sort of scintillating conversation. :-)

Yesterday I took a ninety minute hike through Tilden Regional Park (aka Tilden Mud Flats, this time of year) ... but aside from a general perception that the sun was too hot, I was unable to come up with any Solaufien-related ideas. :-)

No worries. We'll come up with the scintillating conversations, at least for Sola, and your job can be to tell us how wonderful we are and find ways to sneak it into the mod.

I've decided that since clawing my way to the top seems to require knowledge of WeiDU, the next rung on the CSoH ladder shall be to come up with a dialogue where I can use CHAIN.  Maybe for Safana in GB's mod, although I don't know if that will count towards my Solaufein standings?

Nah, don't work up a sweat. Your job is to sit there as they giggle to each other about how naughty they are, so that they can feel like MAYBE they're bringing a slight flush to your cheeks.

Which would only put Tsuru's dialog at X-rated (or XX-rated at the MOST) not XXX-rated. :)
