Another console title to forget about.

We're also working on a Game Boy Advance version that will ship this fall. Going straight for the big screen hey.

This actually sounds pretty damn good, kinda like LotR + Final Fantasy. Since i'm a huge fan of both, i think it's pretty promising.

I like the way you get to make your own team rather than playing as the fellowship, it greatly lowers restrictions to what the developers can put in. Also, the thing about being able to unlock evil characters makes it sound like it might even have replay value.

Then again, the 'action' Lord of the Rings games were mind numbingly repetitive and i'm always unsure of EA products...

I wonder when it'll be time to stop releasing crap LotR stuff and make some real games...

I don't like how it says 'characters of the films' and 'places of the films'.  Has no one heard of a book these days?

THE BOOKS!

It is just like the bible in five easy pieces for the short attention spanned.

Heh, believe it or not, but that's the second rabid hipe I live through with Tolkien.

The first happened in early nineties, when Soviet Russia discovered Tolkien and absolutely everyone was compelled to read it. As a good non-comformist I did not touch LOTR but read Silmarillion instead.

I read everything of Tolkien I could get my hands on in 1999, after playing BG.

And then the movie happened. I think I am getting to the point when the cult starts turning me off Tolkien. I do love the books, and I do like the movies, but...huh, it is a bit *too* "popularized", no?

It makes me to re-think my dream of last yer to see a movie/CRPG based on ASOIF... ;)

It doesn't put me off Tolkien, it just irritates me when people forget that there are books as well as films.  I get like that with all my favourite books though.  When the His Dark Materials films are made I'll probably end up killing someone

Domi *happily* A Song of Ice and Fire by GRR Martin - a wonderful fantastorical so far trilogy with awsome character development, priceless dialogue,  and mind-boggling compexity of intrigues and sub-plots.

Edit: Uhm...NOT for the faint of heart.

Em sligthly off-topic, but I have to add that hat really puts me off is merchandizing. Being a real fan of anything is great, but being offered your Darth-Maul tea mug and your Harry Potter underwear and that little amulet Arwen gave to Aragorn. There is a limit to what I can take. Don't get me started on chep One-Ring-replicas. :( Must see is sort of ok, but must buy calls for immediate retribution by the gods.

More console garbage. They need to make a good PC LotR game that is good as the BG games.

Nationnally, most of us probably enjoy freedom of speech.  But this is the internet, not our countries.  I propose strict dictatorship-like controlls over Bryad's statements of his opinion.
On a related note to the topic- LOTR isn't really a good series to base an RPG on.  You're far too limited in behaviour and future.

No, no they aren't. The only books I have read where I thought I would freeze to death in the middle of August. And some of the few books that made me LOATHE some of the characters. I mean absolutely hate. It's been a while since I have read them, and those characters still make my skin crawl.

Actually, they are not that limited. That is... if you can have the option of siding with Sauron, that opens up a sh*tload of possibilities. Plus, with this game thats coming out, i dont think you are limited to only being Aragorn or whoever there is. I hope you can be random people like a hobbit adventurer, A knight of rohan, a guard of minas tirith, though that would be boring :D... or a warrior of Saurons hoarde.. that would be cool. Also, there are so many un-explored places that are not dealt with very much in the main plot, and it also leaves alot of room for artistic license.

What blasphemy! >:(

Best place for you is at a console gaming forum, not here (where all the Bryadish people are).

As a punishment, I herby banish you from this plane of existance (the Pocketplane) for such heresy.

A hobbit adventurer?

Scene 1: 'See me, I am one of the Proodfoot family. My story, you ask? Didn't change much, but I am going to tell it to you anyway.'

Knight of Rohan?

Scene1:'I love the smell of leather in the morning. I loved the great charge. I was the 225th from the top left.'

I am sorry Bryad. I cannot see this is gonna happen with a movie franchise. You'd be lucky to even get to play someone outside of the fellowship, let alone a female char. Perhaps I am too pessimistic here, but I just agree to the too limited standpoint.

Oh no no no no no no, that's where your wrong.  I can't tell you how many times I opened up my BG or BG2 game looking for my true love interest, Legolas.  :-*  I've searched cloakwood1, 2, 3, 4 and all of Suldanessellar, not to mention all the un-named wooded, rolling hill, or forest areas and for some reason I can never find him.  :'(  Yes, I would play as Gimli just to get a view of the cute little elven arse. :P

I'd agree with Jester - there is very little potential in the LoTR rpg, becuase the events are so pre-set and pre-cast. What I would not mind seeing is a game dealing with Noldori exedus from Valinor, and ability to join either with Feanor or Fin-Fins and adventure for a time in early ages of ME.  :)

From the interview (edited for Alarielle's sanity  ;D):
Quote
You play as a group of characters that you create. Those characters live in the world of the Middle-earth depicted in the films books

You travel on a sort of "S" curve that weaves in and out of the path of the Fellowship through the story of the trilogy. At times you'll be behind or "next to" them; at other times you'll be in the same time and place as members of the Fellowship.

The main focus of the game is the quest on the side of good, but you can also unlock evil encounters, and we think players will really enjoy playing on the side of Sauron in addition to playing as good guys.

Admittedly, this doesn't mean the game will be good, however it does mean it won't be restricted by the fellowship characters and their adventures.

It all matters about taste. I am sure if you set up a poll at a console game forum, the results will be dramatically different as if you not only set up a similar poll like this in a PC/MAC game forum, but in a PC/MAC game modding community. (yeah, these modding communities are more tightly knit than regular gaming forums. Something unexplainable keeps the community together).

But by the way, I feel great distaste towards console games of any kind. I really don't know why people buy such engines, as console games can be programmed into PC's, but not necessarily vice versa.

I am excited about the game, simply because it sounds a lot like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic as far as game playing, only it is set in Middle Earth. Now that is frickin' awesome. And there are some games that are SO much better on console than they would be on PC.

Some games that are better on Console than they would be on PC?!!!  You have got to be kidding.  ???
(Sorry but I've got a raw nerve at the moment with xbox bringing the new Thief game down to its level.  Grrr...)
I'm still hoping that the Console fad will fade away and the games industry will start making quality Computer RPG's again.  I won't hold my breath. ;)

Not kidding. Some games are just more console friendly, because of the way the controller is. For example, I couldn't POSSIBLY imagine how it would be to play the mini-games of Star Wars: KotOR with a mouse or the arrow keys. It just makes more sense to play it with a controller. :)

This is true for any game that requires running around, jumping, or performing any type of reflex-oriented actions.

The PC version of KotOR is superior because the graphics are superior. There's also the modding potential of PC games. PCs can do anything consoles can do better - except when the bugs hit. Even then, PC game bugs are fixable and console game bugs are not.

How much do consoles cost these days, anyways?  There will come a time when people realise that the consoles they're buying are actually computers that can only play a select few overpriced games, and don't do things like scan pics, do resumes/reports/letters, or e-mail, etc.

Then we--the computer people--will be able to stick our noses in the air and say with an air of disdain, "I knew it would happen."

Fricking consoles.  Gah.

Companies do not want versatility. The developers want a streamlined system. An xbox is and xbox is and xbox. They know what to develop for. The salespeople want a system that lets you buy the games and play the games. Period. Modifications and backups (see other threads) ar not on the menu.

For the consumer I do not know of anything a console can do that a PC or apple can't aside from every gadget known to man.

I know someone who dislikes the Xbox because she thinks it is too close to a computer because of its hard drive.  The problem with computers becoming the universal gaming machine is SOME people still think of playing computer games as either Doom, or some guy with a huge retainer and three inch tick glasses hunched over staring at a screen for hours on end.  (No offense to anyone with either of those accesories)

??? Whereas I imagine console customers as sporty entrepreneurs who are married to a singer turned model turned actress who give yoga classes and lectures on classic French poetry and enjoy half an hour of gaming fun in between their boardroom meetings and their golf rounds.  :P

Considering the immense popularity of The Sims and the ubiquity of computers, I don't see how anyone could still hold that particular prejudice. Not to mention that having a strange aversion to computers is a very good way to not get a job.

I have edited the post to make it more appropriate.  Anyways, Jester, I thin kthe console appeals more to the less technologically skilled user because of its lower level of complexity.  It's much more difficult to screw your computer to hell than your PS2, unless you count smashing stuff with a hammer.
