I love NHL playoffs.
GO WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I love the playoffs too ;) It means the season is almost over :P
Soon I'll be able to watch Sportscenter and see something other than hockey.
Although, hasn't the world's lamest sport (baseball) just started again?
Come on football season!... or at least the draft, that's soon I think :)
-
There are few things in life greater than plaayoff hockey.
Wings are gonna get past Nashville
Calgary just beat Vancouver, they'll take game 6 back at home
Ottawa will beat the Leafs, and all of western Canada well rejoice
Colorado will win the cup,of course.
and there's nothing wrong with Baseball :P
-
and there's nothing wrong with Baseball :P
I didn't say that something was wrong with it. It's just that it's "more boring than church." :P

Just because it doesn't have people preforming ridiculous dances after they score, doesn't mean it's boring :P
-
Well said :D I am defeated :-[
All Hail Baseball!, the greatest game on earth :-*
-
:D ;D
But yeah,I wanna see Ottawa and Colorado get to the finals. If not Colorado, then Calgary.I have hated the Red Wings for as long as I can remember :P
-
:D ;D

My brother and friend of mine go for Detroit. Next time I see them, I'll tell them they suck, just for you ;)
-
Yes! Red Wings fans must be silenced....
-
Well said :D I am defeated :-[
All Hail Baseball!, the greatest game on earth :-*
Yeah! There are no other sports in the world! Woohoo!
*Ahem*

Oh, yes, let us not forget the majesty of the nil-nil tie.
-
Oh, yes, let us not forget the majesty of the nil-nil tie.
That comes from teams who play the trap,IE New Jersey.I still want think the NHL should put a shootout after a regular season tie.Not the playoffs of course, that would be stupid
-
Actually, I was referring to Shodan trying to bring soccer into the discussion. Although hockey, also being possessed of the offside rule, is similarly fundamentally broken.
I WANT to be offsides, and leave me alone. :)
-

Exactly. Now Shinty, there's a real game. Possibly the most violent ball game on earth and definately the most fun.
-
Alarielle, you're Scottish and don't like 'soccer'? But i don't... oh, the terrible international side, right... ;)
-
FOOTBALL is the worst sport in the history of the universe. It appalls me. I much prefer rugby and shinty. As my friend Alistair likes to say: Football is a gentleman's game played by hooligans, rugby is a hooligan's game played by gentlemen.
-
FOOTBALL
Yeah, i was gonna say football, but i went with what the majority probably know it as.
Fair enough i suppose (although isn't saying it appalls you a little extreme?), personally football's my favourite sport, although i'm starting to like rugby (much better than 'American Football', what the hell's all that padding for anyway!?).
No idea what shinty is though, care to enlighten me?
-
shinty is like a mixture of rugby, hockey and a civil war ;D I believe it was used to train highland warriors in the agility of mind and body needed to gain their fierce reputation on the battlefield.
it's not football itself that appalls me, it's more the religious fanatacism that is associated with it
-

Hey don't count out Vancouver just yet, i mean if they play the way they're supposed to.....then Vancouver in seven (i just don't see Calgary winning three in a row). And hopefully anyone besides Colorado, Detroit and New Jersey will win the cup.....give someone else a chance to taste victory :)
-
Football is an excellent sport. It ocmbines skill, strength, strategy and janet jackson's boob to make a perfect sport.

Eh, Janet Jackson gives me a headache >:(

As long as it's not Detroit or Toronto,I'm happy

Our fanaticism scares you? :D
After seeing some of the 'riots' immediately following certain games in the UK I was mortified. It's our baseball fans that riot here.. and, even then, the drunks bust up their own town the idiots. Perception is a fickle thing, inn't it. ;)
For the record, I've never been involved in a riot but readily admit to yelling at the TV just like the next person. :)
Football is a gentleman's game played by hooligans, rugby is a hooligan's game played by gentlemen.
I'll keep that in mind. 8)
-
not yours specifically, ours is fairly impressive itself ;)
-
And the Red Wings advance to the next round... ;D
-
And the Red Wings advance to the next round... ;D
If the Flames beat Vancouver tomorrow,it'll be Flames v Red Wings. If they lose,it's Avs vs Red Wings.I wanna see Matthew Barnaby run Holmstrom into the Avs bench ;D
-
Ottawa beat Toronto. Yay.
I hope the Canucks can put it together and play a full 60minutes like their first 40minutes the other night.

And I hope Brendan Morrison DIES.DIIIIIIIES

Pfft, I may be the only one here but
GO LEAFS GO ;D
-
The Leafs will be out. They will lose in their 7th game to Ottawa. :D
-
Err... game 7 between Toronto and Ottawa is tomorrow. The series is 3-3.
-
It's a conspiricy
-
Post modified accordingly. GO OTTAWA.
-
And the Red Wings advance to the next round... ;D
;D
-
i'd like to see ottawa win just to piss off all the toronto fans at school
-
I kinda hope the Flames win. Then it will be Red Wings & Avs in the third round (save it for last). That matchup will be just as exciting as the Stanley Cup. :)
-

Don't count the Flames out, younger than Detrout overall :P
But you're right,Avs v Red Wings is always a great series.

Feh, being an "older" team has not stopped Detroit in the past. Older just means more experienced. :)

GO WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry, but now, ill have to kill ya.. CANUCKS WILL CRUSH YOU, MWHAHAHAHAHHAHHAAHAHAHHAH!
-
Ok,game update: 2nd period over, Calgary winning 1-0 over the greatest city in canada: Vancouver.... Something is terribly wrong..

-
Didn't he nearly kill someone?
-
Yeah, but stilll....
Regardless, tonights game ended in a tie, a shame theres no over time.... Oh well..
Man.. i cant believe the net was totalyl open, they had nothing to lose... :-X
Then. 5.7 seconds left.. WOHOO
-
Didn't he nearly kill someone?
Yes,he sent Steve Moore to the hospital with a horribley vicious hit and punch from behind. He should have been banned from hockey for life.

Yeah, but stilll....

Now that Vancouver is out, GO FLAMES!!

The thing is, I need the Leafs to win to tick off all the Senators fans I'm around :D
Edit: And they did 4 to 1. Yeah for the Leafs

-
GO HABS GO!
-
GO HABS GO!
Habs vs Calgary, just like in 89 finals ;D
-
I'd love to see that. The NHL exec probably wouldn't because of lost TV revenues, but it would be a great series.
-

and who knows? Calgary took the first game with Detroit :o
-
I am refraining from comment, because whenever I support a team, they lose. That said, I should make this absolutely clear: I am entirely indifferent as to how well the Flames do. If they win, I don't care. If they lose, no skin off my nose. Under no circumstances would I cheer them on, as I am unconcerned about the whole affair.
Is everyone perfectly clear on that?
-
Quite clear...you want the Flames to win.
-
No. YOU ARE WRONG, Kish. You are so incredibly wrong I can't even begin to explain how very wrong you are, that's how wrong you are. Quite wrong, I must say. Yes indeedy, wrong is the word I'd use to explain what your answer was.
-
I thought like you did. Then I watched every game of that Canucks series. You will be drawn in.You will be running up and down 17th ave screaming incoherently in a moment of rapture when they win the cup.It is inevitable.
-
i don't think anyone thinks like Ghrey does...
-
Red Wings won today. Everything is back on track. :D
-

They're headed this way.I am going to ambush Cujo and break both his knees.

And all is right with the world.

Why bother? Then they'll just send in Legace.
Anyways, since I have them in my hockey pool: GO Sharks!!!

BWA HA HA!!!!
Your Avs may not even make it out of the second round, at the rate they are going. :P
And don't worry. Legace is more than good enough to beat them. Not that he will need to be tested, as the Queen of the Undead (read: me) will be Cujo's new personal body guard. ;)

Don't say such things.I have endured heart ache for too long. The avs will make it to at LEAST the conference finals. They have to,or else I am going to kill Tony Granato. And being the Queen of the Undead, would you have a slight aversion to daylight? :P

You're making this harder than it should be.If not me who does it,than a fanatical Flames fan. They would be much worse, most likely going after Yzerman after(which is a hockey sin)
-
I like the fact that you quoted Rufus Wainwright in your sig. :)
In all honesty,I hope the Avs win their series. Seeing the Wings and Avs play in the third round would be good fun. :)
-
They always play great hockey. And if you mention the last time they played each other in the playoffs,i WILL cry,I assure you.Poor Patrick. What happened?
I had an opportunity to go to a Rufus Wainwright concert recently.I didn't have the 35 bucks,so my sister took someone else. You'd think a sibling would lend you some money in times of dire need ::)
-
I believe the original lyrics are by Lenord Cohen, great song though.
-
Leonard Cohen is a genius, if a little depressing
-
Leonard Cohen is a genius, if a little depressing
a LITTLE? :D
Yeah,he originally did the lyrics.Jeff Buckely also covered it,and it's very well done, just him and his electric guitar, though no distortion so it sounds very nice :)
-
Jeff Buckley's version is my favourite by far. I believe that rendition of the song has additional lyrics compared to the original Leonard Cohen.
Leonard Cohen's songs to slit your wrists to albums can be a bit depressing, but it isn't so bad if you don't listen to the lyrics. :).
GO FLAMES!
-
Leonard Cohen doesn't depress me that much, it's more people like James Taylor that get me down

Jeff Buckley has the voice for it when Rufus Wainwright doesn't.And Leonord Cohen can be depressing, but if you actually listen to the man try to sing,it's even more depressing
And James Taylor depressing? I don't see it.
-
Fire and Rain? Don't Let Me Be Alone Tonight? Sweet Baby James? Ok, he's not THAT depressing, but a lot of his songs have a sad significance for me.
Now Bright Eyes, there's a band that makes you wanna die
-
Eh,the lyrics are depressing, but the music isn't.Don't get me wrong,I love James Taylor though.Though, more depressing if they mean something to you,as you said.
But for me,it's Elliott Smith(rest in peace) that makes me wanna jump off the nearest roof.
Crap.Hijacked thread.Um.Todd Bertuzzi should be killed, and Peter Forsberg will lead my boys back to the finals!
-
he does tend to induce suicidal feelings
-
Who? Todd Bertuzzi? I thought he just induced homicidal rages in most people :P
-
no, elliot smith silly :D
-
How did we end up whit a musical hockey thread?
-
don't question the natural progression ;)
-
What do you guys think makes hockey so popular? Its like soccer, but with sticks and a puck, and on ice. Okay, so its not like soccer at all ::)
-
*sigh* My Avs lost again.Managment is gonna clean house soon.
-

Hockey is so popular because...well, it's the best damn sport out there! :D

*ducks and runs from all the sports fans in this thread*

the excitement, the drama, the highs and lows, the coolest game in the world or so it claims..... :)
but it's mainly popular in countries that have winter....no quite the same in countries that constantly experience 25+ degrees Celcius (or 80+ degrees Fahrenheit) all year round
soccer which i also like is also quite popular thus quite similar to hockey in that regard :D
GOOOAL!! GO-GO-GO-G0-GO-GO-GO-GOOOAL!!

I never will get the whole "hockey in the desert" thing.
-
Actualy hockey's not nearly as popular as soccer globally. We just have lots of Canadians here to fanactically induce conversations about hockey.
-
very true. You know, more people go to football (soccer) matches every sunday in Britain than go to church

Those teams are gonna be hit hard if there's no season next year.

Most people I know are hardcore football and baseball teams. I see know very few people in my area who play hockey.
-
Well then heres a question, if Hockey isn't that popular word wide, why is it in the Olympics and other sports such as Soccer(Foot Ball for the Non Candians here) Baseball.
Or you just going to blame the our Evil Candian influence on this one as well ? :)
-
Well then heres a question, if Hockey isn't that popular word wide, why is it in the Olympics and other sports such as Soccer(Foot Ball for the Non Candians here) Baseball.
I'm not sure what you mean but i'm going to take a stab here and say that soccer and baseball are also in the Olympics (Summer Olympics that is). In terms of global significance for hockey, winning in the Olympics is the biggest prize (i.e bigger than the World Championships), but at least for soccer the biggest worldwide event is of course the World Cup. It just seems that soccer is more popular mainly cause more people on average play it for various reasons (not the case in Canada though).
Or you just going to blame the our Evil Candian influence on this one as well ? :)
Canadians aren't evil.........unless of course i'm in on the whole deal and i'm just saying to this deceive you all.....or i have already been influenced :)
-
Oh,we're evil alright. We unleashed Celine Dion upon the world.
-
Oh,we're evil alright. We unleashed Celine Dion upon the world.
Now that was harsh
;D

Actually, more young people play Soccer nationally in Canada than play hockey. Kind of a strange statistic when you consider the quality of our national hockey teams compared to the quality of our national soccer teams, but the universe works in mysterious ways.
-
The hockey players are given the genetic alterations free of charge. Soccer players can only afford cheap cybernetic enhancements
-

Hockey costs so much to play, which may be a part of it. If someone has played hockey for a while, you're pretty much guaranteed that they're really into it. Soccer, on the other hand, doesn't need much more than a ball and a lot of room. No zambonis.

Yes, money is definately a factor, but you'd still think that with the huge number of people playing soccer that we would be able to field better international mens teams. I guess it might partially be the lack of a Canadian international mens soccer tradition and establishment or we may see stronger Canadian mens teams in the future when the current batch of boys youth soccer players get to be old enough to play on the international team. Our international women's team fares much better than the men. *Shrug*

Sadly Canada just doens't have the tradition of other countries (not even a decent stadium to call our own....which is why we don't host many international soccer events), and i guess it's hard to develop an effective style because of several factors (i.e weather, no real professinal league, lack of player development). And the women do better because compare to a lot of other countries in the world they have actually been playing for longer and receive more support than other women (unfortunately sports such as soccer in other countries remain male-dominated). Not that I want to take anything away from Canada's women soccer team and the Canadian men still don't have an excuse for playing so below-average....GO CANADA!!

Yay Red Wings!
This is a REALLY exciting series! :)
I'm all for Calgary, but Ville Neimenin is an IDIOT.

Well, duh. Didn't he used to play for the Avs? ;)

Ok I could be mistaken, but I don't think I've ever remember watching Baseball or Soccer in the Summer Olympics. I could be wrong, but I just can't seem to remember them. Maybe its just the Hockey Fever right now. Anyway.
GO LEAFS GO
They tied the season up with Phili 2 to 2

No one can score in Pittsburg ;D
-
MARIO LEMIEUX. HE'S LEAD THE LEAGUE IN SCORING SOME SEASONS WHEN HE'S PLAYED LIEK HALF THE GAMES. AND MORE RECENTLY RYAN MALONE, RIK JACMAN AND DICK TARNSTROM.
-
:D
You poor Pittsburg fan.They just butchered that team.And Mario's injuries.....but you've got Fleury,mmm?
-
We do indeed have Fleury. Pittsbruh ens with and "h". If oyu don't put it here I will go nuts and ppossibly end up hurting smething *attempts to calm himself*
-
I should spell it incorrectly just to have some fun I'm thinking. But yeah, you're gonna lose Fleury eventually. The young fool wants too much money. But I'm probably in a worse off position. My Avs have fallen flat on their faces, with more talent than Pittsburhg could ever hope to see. When they lose,I'm gonna go get drunk then jump off the a bridge into the bow river..... :'(
-
If things go right in the CBA and other similar agreements, a nice salary cap and profit sharing is gonna put teams like pittsburgh back into the upper echelons..*thinks longingly about the good old days which ended abou five years ago when players became greedy bastards*
-
I expect the league to shut down, and teams will fold.I have no faith in Gary Betteman
-
Just to drive the Penguin fans further up the wall, Vancouver got Naslund from Pittsburgh where he played on the 4th line....
-
My Avs have fallen flat on their faces, with more talent than Pittsburhg could ever hope to see. When they lose,I'm gonna go get drunk then jump off the a bridge into the bow river..... :'(

How can I not? After seeing Roy give up those soft goals last year to the Wild, and now seeing my poor Aebischer at the mercy of the detestable Patrick Marleau? Alas,I fear the heartache is too much
or I could just get really drunk and then pass out on my bed. We'll see.

Dude, trust me. The Avs aren't worth killing yourself over. I'd vote for the "drunk and passing out in bed" scenario. :)

The Avs as a whole....maybe not.But Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg, yes.I do go through a mourning period when they lose in the playoffs though. It usually takes me a week or two to recover.
Bah,I don't drink anyway

If it's any consolation, the Avs have had their glory :)
Poor Pittsburgh...although at one point they were full of talent too (Lemieux, Jagr, Francis and company)

Don't they have a great chance of getting the first round pick AGAIN? I guess there is a small advantage to being the worst team in the league.
-
What a great day for me.First, the Flames game,Kipper was amazing. And I truely hope that Steve Yzerman is ok.A man of pure class and heart.
And wow. What an Avs game.Joe Sakic is gonna lead my boys back to win this series. He has scored their past 3 goals, and two straight overtime winners. He is now tied with Maurice "the rocket" Richard for most career overtime playoff goals. No one in the league right now deserves the C on their sweater more than Sakic. My screams of joy could be heard across the whole neighbourhood when he scored on that exquisite pass from Forsberg.

Actualy Washington won the draft lottery. The last place team hasn't gotten the first pick for five straight years now.

One of the many teams to dump their big salaries. My Avs thank them for Steve Konowalchuck :)

Excuse me while I go drown my sorrows with a nice, cold, comforting screwdriver.

I know that pain well.I've gone through it too many times.Joseph played amazing though.Good effort by them
-
Ow last game Sunday still hurts being a Leaf fan. Only thing worse than that game was Don Cherry (if you are Canadian and know who he is) outfit. It looked like he made a suit out of somones bad looking curtains.

time to get drunk
:'(

Or the Sharks, who will beat Vancouver/Colorado in the next round.
Don't make me laugh.Vancouver,yes.Colorado? NEVER
And we even get home ice for another round. Life is good. ;D

The wound stings.I want Tony Granato's head on a platter!! The only way to ease the pain.*sigh* at least we didn't lose to the Red Wings

WOOT! GO FLAMES.

Hey, awesome. That's the way I do it, too. If a team is good enough to beat my team, then I'll cheer them on. As long as it was fairly won and all that jazz. :)
-
Well, sure, and that provides some built-in wound-salving.
"Hey, well, at least they got beat by the eventual champs!"
sounds better than
"Well, uh, yeah, they got beat by the guys who got swept in the next round."
-
reminds me of some fan-manship of mine a couple years ago whilst watching the NFL playoffs...

No, it's more like "If they're good enough to beat MY team, then they're good enough to deserve my cheers." If they lose, the other team probably bribed an official or cheated somehow.
-
Okay, it's amusing image time.
Flames pwn u all. :)
-
Beautiful ;D
-
Amusing even for the non-Calgary supporter.
-
Classy.
-
Pirates are all about class.
-
So, out of curiosity, why does everyone love to hate the Red Wings?
-
You know my reasons.Just been an Avs fan so long,I have to hate them.
-
I personally have nothing against the Red Wings, although I like to support the underdog which over the past ten years has usually NOT been Detroit mainly for the reason that they're usually the top team in the NHL. :)
As a Canuck fan though the rivalry (and sometimes displeasure) is strongest with Colorado :)

That is true,I am starting to hate the Canucks an awful lot too.Damn that Todd Berutzzi
Now when I say hate,I don't mean the players, just more the team.I do like players like Pavel Datsyuk or Brendan Morrison, just not their teams :)
-
So, out of curiosity, why does everyone love to hate the Red Wings?
Probably because they have a tendency to win a whole lot. So it's sort of like hating the Yankees.
-
Exactly ;D
-
I don't hate them, it's only a sport. I just prefer Calgary, since it's my team.
-
Great game tonight if you are a Flames fan. 4-1 over San Jose. It just seems like Calgary is the hungrier team right now.
-
I hate the red wings because they can buy victories. They're like the yankees of hockey: huge icty, big bucks, lots of fans and an expensive franchise. They're like the Rangers, but they win.
-

I'm afraid the Avalanche are in that category too :'(

So wait, I'm confused. You hate them because they try to build a team with a bunch of really good players? :P Isn't that kinda what you are SUPPOSED to do with sports? And since when does a franchise come from a small city? ;)
-

You're comparing Detroit to New York City. ::)

I don't think the Red Wingds buy victories, they do spend a fair bit of money but they have good coaching, the right team make-up and they also have heart........the only thing annoying about them is that they win a lot. I think in baseball money plays more of a factor than in hockey though.
-
If this degenerates into a baseball discussion, I'm going to murder you all and burn your respective towns to cinders. Except Calgary. If you live there, I'll just torch your house and probably your neighbourhood.

I love baseball.Roy Halladay is a good pitcher. The yankees suck.I like Al Leiter,he used to play for the jays.
Bring it on,pirate boy ;D
-
Perhaps I will merely let your own incompetence and bad taste be your downfall. Yes, that sounds like a much better plan, as it means I can continue to sit on my ass and do nothing.
Consider It brought on.
-
ah, the classic lazy man's vengeance
-
The majority of hockey teams are losing money. Meanwhile a small few can afford these teams full of superstars and with experienced coaches and huge stadiums and such. That's whyTEH NHL NEEDS PROFIT SHARING!!!!!!!!11111

SALRAY CAP OMG!!11!!
-
I've got the small franchise blues..
-
I've got the canadian small franchise blues,I win :P
-
Yeah they definitely need to do something about keeping spending in check and levelling the playing field..........but I doubt that profit sharing will be implemented...
-
The NFL is the most profitable league in the wrold, and they have profit sharing. I'm pretty certain the NBA does too. Why can't hockey follow the common sense trend? (Don't the NFL and NBA also have salariy caps too? I know the NFL does)
-

Only the NFL and MLB have profit sharing, and the NBA has a "soft" salary cap meaning that exceptions can be made so that a team can go over it..........I think revenue sharing is a good idea but it'll most likely get accepted only if both the owners and the players see it as beneficial to the league (i.e improve profits)
-
On the whole profit sharing will help the league, but certain larger teams *cough*Detroit*cough* will not really gain anything and might actualy lose money
-
The whole idea behind revenue sharing is that richer teams won't be able to dominate the sport year in and year out and that teams with less financial resources will actually spend any profit they get on improving their team, but yeah not everyone will like it........it's probably safe to assume that this will only happen if a salary cap is put in place first
-
Let's do both!!!! ;D ;D
-
Let's do both!!!! ;D ;D
If only. But Bob Goodenow would sooner cut off his own hand than let that happen.

Suppose someone did it for him...?

So,Philly or the Lightning tonight? I'm going for Philly,I figure they're easier to beat for the flames

With Philly it would have probably been a more physical match......it's hard to say with the Lightning although their captain has plenty of motivation to win the cup........
-
He's an old man.I'm looking forward to seeing Robyn Rehger take big chunks out of Vinnie L ;D
-
Old indeed........he's been playing in the NHL for 22 years...
