I love the playoffs too ;)   It means the season is almost over :P

Soon I'll be able to watch Sportscenter and see something other than hockey.

Although, hasn't the world's lamest sport (baseball) just started again?

Come on football season!... or at least the draft, that's soon I think :)

There are few things in life greater than plaayoff hockey.

Wings are gonna get past Nashville
Calgary just beat Vancouver, they'll take game 6 back at home
Ottawa will beat the Leafs, and all of western Canada well rejoice
Colorado will win the cup,of course.

and there's nothing wrong with Baseball  :P

I didn't say that something was wrong with it. It's just that it's "more boring than church." :P

Oh, yes, let us not forget the majesty of the nil-nil tie.

That comes from teams who play the trap,IE New Jersey.I still want think the NHL should put a shootout after a regular season tie.Not the playoffs of course, that would be stupid

Actually, I was referring to Shodan trying to bring soccer into the discussion. Although hockey, also being possessed of the offside rule, is similarly fundamentally broken.

I WANT to be offsides, and leave me alone. :)

Exactly.  Now Shinty, there's a real game.  Possibly the most violent ball game on earth and definately the most fun.

FOOTBALL is the worst sport in the history of the universe.  It appalls me.  I much prefer rugby and shinty.  As my friend Alistair likes to say:  Football is a gentleman's game played by hooligans, rugby is a hooligan's game played by gentlemen.

FOOTBALL
Yeah, i was gonna say football, but i went with what the majority probably know it as.

Fair enough i suppose (although isn't saying it appalls you a little extreme?), personally football's my favourite sport, although i'm starting to like rugby (much better than 'American Football', what the hell's all that padding for anyway!?).

No idea what shinty is though, care to enlighten me?
Title: Re: Hockey, eh?
Post by: Alarielle on April 16, 2004, 12:43:54 PM
shinty is like a mixture of rugby, hockey and a civil war ;D  I believe it was used to train highland warriors in the agility of mind and body needed to gain their fierce reputation on the battlefield.

it's not football itself that appalls me, it's more the religious fanatacism that is associated with it

Hey don't count out Vancouver just yet, i mean if they play the way they're supposed to.....then Vancouver in seven (i just don't see Calgary winning three in a row).  And hopefully anyone besides Colorado, Detroit and New Jersey will win the cup.....give someone else a chance to taste victory :)

Our fanaticism scares you?  :D
After seeing some of the 'riots' immediately following certain games in the UK I was mortified.  It's our baseball fans that riot here.. and, even then, the drunks bust up their own town the idiots.  Perception is a fickle thing, inn't it.  ;)

For the record, I've never been involved in a riot but readily admit to yelling at the TV just like the next person.  :)

I am refraining from comment, because whenever I support a team, they lose.  That said, I should make this absolutely clear: I am entirely indifferent as to how well the Flames do.  If they win, I don't care.  If they lose, no skin off my nose.  Under no circumstances would I cheer them on, as I am unconcerned about the whole affair.

Is everyone perfectly clear on that?

Jeff Buckley's version is my favourite by far.  I believe that rendition of the song has additional lyrics compared to the original Leonard Cohen.

Leonard Cohen's songs to slit your wrists to albums can be a bit depressing, but it isn't so bad if you don't listen to the lyrics. :).

Jeff Buckley has the voice for it when Rufus Wainwright doesn't.And Leonord Cohen can be depressing, but if you actually listen to the man try to sing,it's even more depressing

And James Taylor depressing? I don't see it.

Fire and Rain?  Don't Let Me Be Alone Tonight?  Sweet Baby James?  Ok, he's not THAT depressing, but a lot of his songs have a sad significance for me.

Now Bright Eyes, there's a band that makes you wanna die

Eh,the lyrics are depressing, but the music isn't.Don't get me wrong,I love James Taylor though.Though, more depressing if they mean something to you,as you said.

But for me,it's Elliott Smith(rest in peace) that makes me wanna jump off the nearest roof.

the excitement, the drama, the highs and lows, the coolest game in the world or so it claims..... :)
but it's mainly popular in countries that have winter....no quite the same in countries that constantly experience 25+ degrees Celcius (or 80+ degrees Fahrenheit) all year round

soccer which i also like is also quite popular thus quite similar to hockey in that regard :D

Or you just going to blame the our Evil Candian influence on this one as well ? :)

I'm not sure what you mean but i'm going to take a stab here and say that soccer and baseball are also in the Olympics (Summer Olympics that is).  In terms of global significance for hockey, winning in the Olympics is the biggest prize (i.e bigger than the World Championships), but at least for soccer the biggest worldwide event is of course the World Cup.  It just seems that soccer is more popular mainly cause more people on average play it for various reasons (not the case in Canada though).

Or you just going to blame the our Evil Candian influence on this one as well ? :)

Canadians aren't evil.........unless of course i'm in on the whole deal and i'm just saying to this deceive you all.....or i have already been influenced :)

Hockey costs so much to play, which may be a part of it.  If someone has played hockey for a while, you're pretty much guaranteed that they're really into it.  Soccer, on the other hand, doesn't need much more than a ball and a lot of room.  No zambonis.

Yes, money is definately a factor, but you'd still think that with the huge number of people playing soccer that we would be able to field better international mens teams.  I guess it might partially be the lack of a Canadian international mens soccer tradition and establishment or we may see stronger Canadian mens teams in the future when the current batch of boys youth soccer players get to be old enough to play on the international team.  Our international women's team fares much better than the men. *Shrug*

Sadly Canada just doens't have the tradition of other countries (not even a decent stadium to call our own....which is why we don't host many international soccer events), and i guess it's hard to develop an effective style because of several factors (i.e weather, no real professinal league, lack of player development).  And the women do better because compare to a lot of other countries in the world they have actually been playing for longer and receive more support than other women (unfortunately sports such as soccer in other countries remain male-dominated).  Not that I want to take anything away from Canada's women soccer team and the Canadian men still don't have an excuse for playing so below-average....GO CANADA!!

As a Canuck fan though the rivalry (and sometimes displeasure) is strongest with Colorado :)

I don't hate them, it's only a sport.  I just prefer Calgary, since it's my team.

Great game tonight if you are a Flames fan. 4-1 over San Jose.  It just seems like Calgary is the hungrier team right now.

I hate the red wings because they can buy victories.  They're like the yankees of hockey:  huge icty, big bucks, lots of fans and an expensive franchise.  They're like the Rangers, but they win.

I'm afraid the Avalanche are in that category too  :'(

So wait, I'm confused. You hate them because they try to build a team with a bunch of really good players? :P Isn't that kinda what you are SUPPOSED to do with sports? And since when does a franchise come from a small city?  ;)

I don't think the Red Wingds buy victories, they do spend a fair bit of money but they have good coaching, the right team make-up and they also have heart........the only thing annoying about them is that they win a lot.  I think in baseball money plays more of a factor than in hockey though.

If this degenerates into a baseball discussion, I'm going to murder you all and burn your respective towns to cinders.  Except Calgary.  If you live there, I'll just torch your house and probably your neighbourhood.

Perhaps I will merely let your own incompetence and bad taste be your downfall.  Yes, that sounds like a much better plan, as it means I can continue to sit on my ass and do nothing.

Consider It brought on.

The majority of hockey teams are losing money.  Meanwhile a small few can afford these teams full of superstars and with experienced coaches and huge stadiums and such.  That's whyTEH NHL NEEDS PROFIT SHARING!!!!!!!!11111

Yeah they definitely need to do something about keeping spending in check and levelling the playing field..........but I doubt that profit sharing will be implemented...

The NFL is the most profitable league in the wrold, and they have profit sharing.  I'm pretty certain the NBA does too.  Why can't hockey follow the common sense trend?  (Don't the NFL and NBA also have salariy caps too?  I know the NFL does)

Only the NFL and MLB have profit sharing, and the NBA has a "soft" salary cap meaning that exceptions can be made so that a team can go over it..........I think revenue sharing is a good idea but it'll most likely get accepted only if both the owners and the players see it as beneficial to the league (i.e improve profits)

On the whole profit sharing will help the league, but certain larger teams *cough*Detroit*cough* will not really gain anything and might actualy lose money
Title: Re: Hockey, eh?

The whole idea behind revenue sharing is that richer teams won't be able to dominate the sport year in and year out and that teams with less financial resources will actually spend any profit they get on improving their team, but yeah not everyone will like it........it's probably safe to assume that this will only happen if a salary cap is put in place first

With Philly it would have probably been a more physical match......it's hard to say with the Lightning although their captain has plenty of motivation to win the cup........
