Post by: Cybersquirt on April 05, 2014, 08:12:31 PM
Anyone else curious about Microsoft's April 8 deadline?  I've been a downloading fool...

Harsh.

I still have at least three computers I've fired up in the past year which run XP. It's an interesting victim of its own success. I think they'll have no choice but to walk it back and publicly release some of the bugfixes they're doing privately for large organizations who are paying for ongoing support.

Aside from the OS XP stuff. I will always mistrust code. So should you. :)

I highly recommend using Autopatcher (http://www.autopatcher.com/) to keep ya XP (and win 7, 8, 2003, 2k) machines up-to-date.

There's two parts to it:
[1] it'll download--but not install--all patches & modules; Important, Recommended, etc.

You can keep this as an archive. But it'll also be used for...

[2] It gives you the option to pick&choose which modules to install, then will autoinstall them without prompting to the user (except finishing the process).

It also includes some extras such as 3rd-party apps confirmed to work in XP, e.g. 7-zip; XP system tweaks; Flash, dotNet & DirectX updates, and much more.

Uh, thanks? Be careful with 3rd party downloads.

Actually, the downloads are not 3rd party-- the ones from Microsoft come directly from their servers (MS mandated this - the AutoPatcher project used to use mirror servers) - and the 3rd apps like 7-zip come either directly from the home site, or official mirrors.
