First post in a month and totally pointless! Sorry.
The problem was not being able to initiate dialogue with Kresselak in order to accept his quest (that is, a second conversation). It's actually happened a few times since with others but always fixes if i quicksave and immediately reload. I assumed it was IWDNPC since it meddles with dialogue so much :P
In other news, I love IWDNPC. It's very fluid and fits together flawlessly. I think Severn is my favourite.
The only problem I have is that I'm a mage with shocking HP but have to keep him in the first slot for the banter and he keeps arriving in areas right at the front surrounded by the latest ambush. Any suggestions?

I'll check Kresselak, but I don't think we meddle with initiation variables, IWD NPC only adds phrases inside the dialogue itself if NPCs are present. With protagonist=mage, I can recommend different party formations, if possible - or "take" NPC 2/NPC 3 as your active NPC and "lead" him through the areas instead.
