Title: dont know how to install :/
Post by: jax on August 02, 2008, 01:21:17 AM
my problem is similar to one that someone else posted prior to me, but i couldnt figure out how to install it even from there. basically what pops up in that black screen is this:

[C:\Program Files\Black Isle\BGII - SoA/CHITIN.KEY] loaded, 590611 bytes
[C:\Program Files\Black Isle\BGII - SoA/CHITIN.KEY] 184 BIFFs, 41793 resources

ERROR: Unable to find DIALOG.TLK in:
   dialog.tlk

Please run this program in your Infinity Engine game directory.

FATAL ERROR: Failure("Unable to find DIALOG.TLK")

i dont really know how to do mod installs on my own, usually the program starts on its own and chooses a directory but when i try to install this, that screen never even shows. help?

First of all, make sure that your game is not running as you install this mod.

Second, open your BG2 directory and check that dialog.tlk is really there(anything can happen).

Third, when you click on the .exe file you downloaded, and it shows "choose the BG2 directory", choose the correct BG2 directory. In your case, it seems to be C:\Program Files\Black Isle\BGII - SoA

Then, when it's done, go to your BG2 directory and make sure that a /dbg folder appeared there.

If the mod still hasn't installed, run Setup-DungeonBeGone.exe in your BG2 directory.

i dont know what the baldurs gate directory is or how to find it. :/ i feel pretty dumb. and also when i double click the .exe file to start it up, it just goes straight to the little black window and the text automatically tells me

ERROR: Unable to find DIALOG.TLK in:
   dialog.tlk

Please run this program in your Infinity Engine game directory.

FATAL ERROR: Failure("Unable to find DIALOG.TLK")

and thats the end of that. i never get the option to choose a directory.

actually, i figured out where the directory is. there is a dialog.tlk file there but after that, i have no idea what to do.

When you click on the exe you downloaded, they ask you "Install, yes/no?", and you click "yes". Then, BEFORE actually installing the mod, you have to choose the directory(They ask you "Choose BG2 directory").

Don't just click "Install", but press "Browse" button. A window will open. In this window, choose the correct directory, the one where dialog.tlk is. The one you found.

Then proceed.

OR, if you have a tech person in the house, call them over and ask them to read this thread.

it never actually asks me if i want to install it so i never get the opportunity to select a directory. i click the .exe file and it just... GOES. no window asking which directory to choose ever pops up, just something that i think is extracting files and its done in 2 seconds and then the black window pops up saying i must use the infinity engine game directory. so its not necessarily that im clicking the wrong directory, i never get to choose one.

Well, according to what I've seen, that just can't be, so I'm not qualified to answer. All right, then, maybe jcompton can help you better, if he sees this.

Are you sure you've got the right directory? It might sound like a stupid question, but you mentioned earlier that you didn't even know what the BG directory was, so...

Unless you changed it yourself, it should be in a folder called Program Files. There you'll find another folder called Black Isle, and yet another folder called BGII - SoA.

Make sure you have the latest version of the mod. When you download it, put it straight into the BGII - SoA folder, then unzip it in there. Do NOT create a new folder to put the files in; leave them as they are. You should, all being well, now have the Setup-DungeonBeGone file in the BGII - SoA folder.

Double-click that file and report what happens.

I think Kulyok's answer might be a bit out of date, as the latest release of Dungeon-Be-Gone doesn't actually ask you to choose a directory; it just expects to be placed there when it is run. If it isn't, it doesn't work.
