Title: Xan's friendship path for BG1 is here!
Post by: Kulyok on August 09, 2007, 09:13:47 AM
This small mod makes me feel insignificant.

If you see any point in downloading and playing Xan BG2 NPC (http://www.pocketplane.net/xan), Xan Romance and player-initiated talks from BG1 NPC Project (http://gibberlings3.net/bg1npc), or Xan BG2 Soundset (http://www.pocketplane.net/audio) (that's a lot of Xans, right?), give this mod a try.

Sixteen sequential Xan-initiated banters, and four additional Xan-initiated banters in Chapters 4, 5, 6 and 7 - if you're not romancing the poor guy.

This mod is available for BG(no conversions), Tutu/EasyTutu conversion, BGT conversion, BG:EE, and EET conversion in English, French, German and Russian.

Looks like it's incompatible with "Quests and Interjections" component of BG1NPC. With this component installed, when Xan tries to initiate a friend-talk, a PID starts :( W/o Quests and Interjections everything's fine, writing's great as usual with your mods :)
Oh, and there are some lore-related mistakes in dialogue about Faerunian history, is this intentional or not? I'm talking about Age of giants (which happened after the demise of creator races, not before) and Plane of Faerie having been destroyed by elves (although the latter isn't set in stone, IIRC).

Ah, weights. You can just try and install it before BG1 NPC, I suppose, but anyway, okay, I'll make a v2 when I come home. Sorry for the inconvenience!

The giants were, strictly speaking, before the Creator Races, yes - simply because they were the offspring/related to titans, the First Race. However, they didn't die out entirely in the Great Glacier, so they co-existed for some time, and, of course, while the Creator Races died out, giants and their kin are still alive, so there might be some confusion.

The latter isn't set in stone, and the Plane of Faerie still exists in the multiverse, as far as I am aware of. Sources might vary. Sources always vary. :)

Well, FR Campaign Setting (3 ed.) says Creator Saurial Race was the first, that's what I meant :) Still, it's not that big an issue, history isn't (and shouldn't) be too precise a thing.

Actually, it's perfectly believable that Xan might have been snoozing for that particular elven history lesson, or gotten things a bit jumbled.

I suspect both viewpoints are actually correct. I believe it's the mess on which races you'd call "Creator Races" - I mean, technically the first race, created by the Elder Gods, was "Creator Race", too, wasn't it - but to reference them all the same would create quite some confusion. So I reference "Creator Races" just like they're referenced in Races of Faerun/Complete Book of Elves/Evermeet/NWN game - lizardfolk.

What's about installation order? Can this mod be the last, even after Sword Coast Stratagems?

Updated: now you can install Xan's friendship path for Tutu before or after BG1 NPC Project. Yay. :)

(and there's a Mac version, too, which might just work)

And, yes, you can install it last, if you wish.

Another small update: Russian translation, BG/BGT version.

(Xan v6 should be available soon, and I've also finally fixed Xan's soundset for plain BG, so there'll be one big Xan announcement, when v6 is uploaded.).

When installing Xan's friendship path for BG1 within my BGT installation, I got the following warnings because of missing files

Yes, this is my fault: I forgot to remove MODDER flag from the final package. My apologies for the inconvenience, v4 is now available for download.

I was positively surprised to see a friendship mod so extensive :) If only there were also some more player-initiated dialogues I'd have to say that it suited me even more than a romance (because I'm not fond of playing elves and never do it otherwise). So I guess the whole point of this post is to give words of appreciation  ;D
Title: Re: Xan's friendship path for BG1 is here!

Thank you! I wanted to insert more player-initiated dialogues, but that would interfere with BG1 NPC project, which has its own player-initiated stuff for Xan (again, mostly mine), so, as I didn't want to be incompatible with myself, I had to dismiss the notion.

Oh - and as for a romance for non-elves, BG2 friendship path may (should you wish to) have a romantic conclusion in ToB.

I thought that was the case. Shame, but you can't have everything ;)

Is this for half-elves only (as I remember rading in read-me) or for humans, too? Anyway, I'm definitely gonna try it. Love developing from a long friendship has a realistic feel to it.

It does, I think. And, yes, it's for humans, too.

I've just reached friendship talk 30 and I'm about to leave for Spellhold, so I think this is the right time for this question: what should I do to have a romantic relationship with Xan later? Confess my love? Hint that that I'm interested? Nothing, just wait? I'm looking forward to it, it's been great so far :)
Title: Re: Xan's friendship path for BG1 is here!

I think you are asking about Xan mod for BG2, not the friendship path for BG1. Yes, you can go to Spellhold now. As for confessing, I think there are some options in SoA, more than one, perhaps, and you could _try_, but... there's a but. :) (Blunt answer: I say it's too early, wait until ToB.)

Thanks for the answer :) Yes, it was about BG2, it was mentioned earlier so I asked here actually forgeting the thread is about BG1, sorry ^^;

Small thing, but in one of Xan's dialogues he laments that if there is a war (between Amn and Baldur's Gate) what a shame it will be that so much of what is essentially peaceful farmland will be destroyed.  Actually, that's not the nature of the Sword Coast at all.  It's untamed wilderness, and very dangerous.

Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast:

Quote
For years, the lands between Waterdeep and bustling Amn have been thought of as the Empty Lands--a vast, inconvenient stretch of wilderness folk venture into only to get from one place to another. Legends abound of grisly fates that befell unfortunate travelers at the hands of orcs, trolls, hobgoblins (and worse!) said to infest the area in veritable armies... As the merchant Falodel of Amn once put it, “The only reason to set foot in the Coast lands is to get down from a caravan wagon that’s going to make you a lot of coins--when it gets to someplace else.”

The strategic, in-the-middle location of the Coast lands forces most overland travelers in western Faerûn to visit them, ere long. The main caravan route to the Inner Sea from Amn to the south, and Waterdeep to the north, runs through the Sword Coast. Thanks to both human and bestial predators, the trip has always been dangerous—hence the name Sword Coast. Down through the ages, many folk have dreamed of founding a kingdom in the verdant valley hidden in the moors. A few have tried, notably around Daggerford and northeast of Beregost—but only tattered tales and well-hidden ruins remain of such glories today.

The Sword Coast is home to some important independent cities: Baldur’s Gate, Berdusk, Elturel, Hill’s Edge, Iriaebor, and Scornubel… [T]he sparsely inhabited, lawless wildernesses between the cities… are studded with many independent holds, castles, and self-styled baronies... Those not traveling with a caravan in the Sword Coast are warned to hire escorts of armed, trustworthy adventurers…

Indeed, but we're talking about the game of Baldur's Gate. In the game, we see farms, villages, etc in abundance. While what we see in the game doesn't actually contradict this piece of Volo's guide, it's still more than that. The mod is all about the game, though it takes FR lore. But the game comes first.
Title: Re: Xan's friendship path for BG1 is here!
Post by: Lemernis on September 05, 2008, 05:09:21 AM
Like I said it's a trivial thing.  Most players probably aren't going to know FR lore that specifically anyway.  I only happen to be versed in it because I researched the setting once for a NWN PW project.  But as far as I can see, the game is actually quite consistent with that depcition.  There's almost no farms at all out in the countryside.  Also in line with canon, you do see some farms closer to Baldur's Gate.  But otherwise for most of the Sword Coast between Baldur's Gate and Nashkel it's anything but peaceful.  The land is in fact a wilderness teaming with monsters.  That's what I see in the game anyway.  It's a small enough detail however that ultimately it won't matter if you leave as is or change.

Also, a bug report:

I'm running a BGT game.  Just after completing Cloakwood, I went to FAI to rest, identify items, sell loot, and so forth.  A conversation from Xan fired where he tells the protagonist that Sarevok Anchev is his brother.  At the end of this conversation I selected "so you're deserting me then?" and IIRC Xan says yes (? best as I can recalll...) but he remains in the party.  But the party hasn't even entered Baldur's Gate yet.  I'm wondering if this is related to BGT's change in chapter numbers.

Not sure if it could be related but right before I just started DSotSC by accepting Jet'Laya into the party, and got the chapter style screen with narrator.

Title: Re: Xan's friendship path for BG1 is here!
Post by: Kulyok on September 05, 2008, 05:36:37 AM

In BGT files, this talk is attuned to BGT chapter numbers: it happens about eight minutes after Chapter variable strikes eight - a correct value.

I can either surmise that
1) my mod didn't recognize BGT 1.06, and simple, BG1 version installed, which means that bg1start.2da file is no longer available in BGT files; I am checking this right now;
2) BGT changed its chapter numerations, or some other mod turned Chapter variable to 8 before its time, which is less likely, but still possible.

Does anyone know better than I do?

I asked Ascension64 about BGT check; we're doing all right here, so it's most likely (http://www.shsforums.net/index.php?showtopic=36603) DSotSC.

It forces a chapter change, which means that all your characters from BG1 NPC will start saying things about your heritage and Sarevok soon, too.

So, it's DSotSC people you need to speak to.

Kulyok is talking about your local problem. I am sure Kulyok will find a workaround for her mod, with or without getting in contact with the authors, but currently the bug is in your game, and there Kulyok did all she needs to for solving it.

I don't have anything to do with DSotSC, no. If they screwed up, they didn't just screw up Xan's talk - they screwed BG1 NPC, Finch, etc. It's their problem.

EDIT: I did post a notice at DSotSC forum, though. Hopefully it'll be fixed... eventually.

I hope that comment was taken in the light-hearted, gentle chop-busting spirit that it was meant with the  ;) attached.  I guess an emote can't always do justice to tone of voice one intends.  Spoken, tone would be friendly and kidding.  :)

Anyhoo, I'd be very surprised if there is a fix for something like this with a game already underway.  Just reporting the bug 'sall.

Welcome to PPG, and I'm sorry to hear about the trouble.

We check our mods with various antivirus software; so far we've been fine - I hope. You can install Xan's friendship and other mods. Please, check this post (http://forums.gibberlings3.net/index.php?s=&showtopic=16687&view=findpost&p=143260). I'll certainly do another re-check on my side, but, like I said, usually it's a false positive.

Okay, problem solved. Weidu 208 was giving false alarms. We switched to Weidu 210, and the warnings have gone. Re-download the mod again, if you were concerned the first time.

Kulyok - I can't find a speciific bug-report thread and I haven't turned up an answer to this particular problem, so I'm hoping you can help. I started with v4 and updated to v5 just in case it was fixed. Now, the problem....

On beating seven bells out of Marek in the Blushing Mermaid, some locals got caught in the crossfire and turned red (maybe a result of having SCS installed?). I slept and they turned blue again. On leaving the BM Xan starts

'<CHARNAME>, you have started down the dangerous path <etc>'

It doesn't matter which answer I give, the interjection is in an infinite loop and triggers approx. every two-three seconds. I tried kicking Xan out and reclaiming him, but the moment I did so he started again. Any ideas? I tried following the .dlg file myself to see if I could spot a possible problem but I failed miserably.

Dangerous path dialogue is from BG1 NPC mod, x#xanlt.d - if your rep drops. It should trigger ONLY if Xan is in party, naturally. It looks like this in v17:

IF WEIGHT #-2 ~%BGT_VAR% Global("X#XanLowRep","GLOBAL",1)~ THEN BEGIN X#XanLowRep
SAY @784
++ @785 DO ~SetGlobal("X#XanLowRep","GLOBAL",2) RealSetGlobalTimer("X#XALowRepTalkTime","GLOBAL",7200)~ + XALREP1
++ @786 DO ~SetGlobal("X#XanLowRep","GLOBAL",2) RealSetGlobalTimer("X#XALowRepTalkTime","GLOBAL",7200)~ + XALREP2
++ @787 DO ~SetGlobal("X#XanLowRep","GLOBAL",2) RealSetGlobalTimer("X#XALowRepTalkTime","GLOBAL",7200)~ + XALREP3
++ @788 DO ~SetGlobal("X#XanLowRep","GLOBAL",2) RealSetGlobalTimer("X#XALowRepTalkTime","GLOBAL",7200)~ + XALREP4
END

- you see that it should be closing itself. So, either your installation is screwed, or there's some problem with dialog.tlk - you don't have Virtue installed?

It's definitely not Xan Friendship, in other words, but it's still a problem. I recommend you to post a new topic in BG1 NPC about this, with your Weidu.log(which Bg1 npc version are you using?). Uninstall Xan Romance from BG1 NPC if you have to.
Title: Re: Xan's friendship path for BG1 is here!
Post by: Yovaneth on June 28, 2009, 05:13:27 AM
Thank you for taking the time to check that. I hadn't realised my rep had taken such a dive from a fight that I didn't even start! The version of BG1NPC 'should be the latest' but it has to be worth a re-check. I don't have Virtue installed - now I come to look at my Weidu log, I'm surprised at how little I do have listed for BGTuTu (UB, Tweaks, BG1NPC, SCS, Xan, Indira, Grey Clan). In the past I had always avoided taking Xan perceiving him as a weak choice but this time through I have really enjoyed having him, thanks both to you and the BG1NPC team.

Small typo in O#XanBG1.tra:

Looked through O#XanBG1.tra and noticed some things:

@145  = ~I might be wrong, but it seems that everything we do is - every our step is directed towards achieving immortality. One way or the other.~

do is - every our step -> do - our every step

@200  = ~(sigh) Whatever possessed me to bring it with you?~

bring it with -> bring it up with

@235  = ~(sigh) I wish I could escape being Mulahey's prisoner, but then we might have never travelled together.~

could escape -> could have escaped

@266  = ~Then, the time of giants came. Aggressive and prone to intestine strife as they were, they doomed themselves to a slow fall into chaos and savagery, as have their descendants: ogres, ettins and others.~

intestine -> incessant or internal

@268  = ~At last, the Creator Races were destroyed in a great cataclysm. It is said - somewhat poetically, perhaps, that the very being of Faerun cried out, and from that grief were born those known as the Younger Gods. Corellon Latherian was among them.~

Latherian -> Larethian

Version 7 [BETA] for Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition is now available, thanks to Kaeloree's hard work. It works fine on my English install, but I'd appreciate an extra report or two from French, German or Russian players.

I incorporated most(if not all) suggestions from this thread into v7, too.

It is available from the mod's download page. (http://www.pocketplane.net/tutumods)

(All new content for v7 has been incorporated into v8 for BGT/BG/Tutu users, as well.)

Version 8 adds an Italian translation for all users. Huge thanks to our hard-working translator, totuccio5, and an equally tireless proofreader, Aedan!

Non-Italian users do not need to update or to reinstall, although the new Tutu/BGT/BG1 version incorporates some typo revisions(BG:EE version had them in v7).

The mod is available, as always, at http://www.pocketplane.net/tutumods

Does friendship pick up if you kill the romance? Or will he just sulk rest of game while you are with your other love?
Title: Re: Xan's friendship path for BG1 is here!
Post by: Kulyok on August 15, 2013, 12:26:53 AM
It picks up, but only if you killed the romance early enough. If you let it to get all the way to 2 - romance committed, and THEN dumped Xan - sorry, tough luck.

Post by: Kulyok on August 15, 2013, 09:32:17 AM
I don't have the code nearby right now, but story-wise I think that no, it absolutely shouldn't. That talk should be the point of no return: if you told him you wanted to be friends in one of the previous talks(where there were options for that), it'd have worked.

Oh, but it probably does, right about that corner, yes: the code says that unless Global("X#XARomanceActive","GLOBAL",2), you can have the friendship.
