Title: The ORIGINAL entrance to the Candlekeep catacombs
Post by: SixOfSpades on February 27, 2006, 03:34:08 PM
Well, I'll be jiggered! I learned something new again last night.

At the back of the ground floor of the Candlekeep Library, there is a kitchen.
Next to the kitchen, there is a pantry.
On the rear wall of the pantry, there are some shelves.
Below the shelves, there is a secret passageway, with stairs leading down.

I guess playtesting does have its merits after all.  ;D

It is closed when you first enter the library. It doesn't seem to be detectable by a Thief looking for Traps (most likely because it's been almost completely disabled). But I have found that it can be revealed/opened in two ways: Either by killing the Iron Thronies, or by looting the library for everything worth carrying away. Too bad that you can click on it and it won't take you anywhere.
In a minute, I'm going to send the screenshots to icelus.

Largely-Unsubstantiated Hypothesis: Originally, the Watchers would only arrest you after you exited the library. This would give you the opportunity to go up to the 6th floor and talk to Tethtoril who, if you were on his good side, offer you a way out of imprisonment and possible execution: Go to the chest in his room and take his Ring of Protection [exactly like every other RoP, just with a different item code], which doubles as a ward key which will enable the party to bypass the protective magics around the secret door hidden in the pantry wall. The party goes through, and the find themselves in the little room that Tethtoril teleports you to in the current version.

If somebody with some more potent modding tools could open up this section of the game and see exactly what triggers the secret passageway to open, that would be mighty nifty.  :)

Yeah, this looks correct. The ground floor, ar2608, has an entrance point named Exit2613 at 539,538. (By convention, this is the point where an exit from ar2613 would enter into the area.) ar2613 is the small area prior to the catacombs, and has a reciprocal Exit2608 entrance point. There's also a door2613 listed in the ar208 area file.

edit: It's just a door--there's no script or transition attached. It's flagged as open, but 100% difficulty to detect. The info point in ar2613 ("This door leads back to the upper levels of the keep.  From the looks of it, it is heavily warded.  Luckily Tethtoril teleported you past such an obstacle.  Common sense dictates that you make your escape through the opposite door.") looks like it may have been a transition before.

I always wondered why Tethtoril was up there when the game tries to get you arrested before you've got up to his floor--this restoration sounds like it makes some good sense. :)

Definitely something worth restoring, but it's going to take quite a bit of editing of the kind which I've never done before.  This'll have to be a weekend job.

I like your alternate scenario, Six, and thanks again for finding this.  It's the kind of thing that all the NI searches in the world won't find.

But there must be SOME kind of script, or it wouldn't have opened for me when I did either of the 2 things I listed above. So I'm really wondering my head off about this. Gotta go catch a bus, ciao.

Heh, I actually knew about this. I found it while making FotD but clearly forgot to write it down somewhere.

Six: The door has no script and the area script for AR2608 only contains the block that displays the movie.

Well, then....since I couldn't detect the door and I couldn't open the door....how'd the door get opened?

As you can see from my previous post, I have got no idea. :)

Hmmmm.....try checking the area scripts for the other floors in the library, that should put us on to something.

Nothing there either.

Could this be something that's affected by the game version?  I only have The Original Saga, so I can't really check anything else.

If I'm reading the NI info on the area file correctly, the door is always open.  I can't find a script or trigger or anything that allows you to "see" it.  To be honest... I have no idea how to fix this (though I would very much like to).  :-\

I have Tales of the Sword Coast version 1.3.5512.
You might perhaps test your own game to see if this bizarre quirk is present in your game as well: CLUA yourself to Candlekeep, check out the pantry, kill the Iron Thronies, check out the pantry again. There's gotta be something that opens that passageway, I can't believe BioWare would bury this particular script in the Baldur.exe or something like that.

Well, I teleported to AR2608, and I see the area on the wall that you're talking about.  I went to the third level, killed the Iron Throne people, then got caught and sent to jail.  When Tethtoril teleported me back to the secret library, I CLUA'd back to AR2608 but I still was not able to activate the passage.  I will try one more time, but this time, after killing the Iron Throne members, I'll transport back down to AR2608.

Even if the trigger isn't present in some or all versions of the game, it's not to say that it's impossible to restore it.  I just don't know how, s'all.

EDIT:  Still couldn't recreate it, sorry.  :(

I won't be able to follow through on this anytime soon, but would Before and After savegames be of any use to someone with a different game version?

If you want to go ahead and send them over to me, I'll hang on to them to see if anyone else would like to test it.

EDIT:  If you have any screenshots, send them, too.
