Title: "Modify" has gone!
Post by: Eral on October 22, 2005, 07:23:23 AM
Borsook asked this question, and I second it.  Is this a temporary glitch? Has someone shut down our Edit facility? What prevails?

I have it (at least I checked a specific forum).

Err, yes, here it's missing  :)

The facility to modify posts has been removed from Ensign First Class Blather, it is difficult to have a proper argument if someone is editing a post that your a replying to. The message informing you that additional posts have been made since you starting typing are invaluable, however, they are utterly useless if people simply add their new thoughts to the bottom of their previous posts.

The removal is an absolute bastard if you've made a typo, though.

Such as "your" instead of "you're" for example.

Perhaps there is a SMF plugin which gives the 'Warning: post x, y and z have been edited'?
[and, a similar plugin for IPB wouldn't be amiss either  :) ]

Is this necessary? I can only imagine that you are targeting a minority with this removal of the modify button. What's the point in being a member (except for the snarky bonhomie) if you cannot edit your posts? What about (my personal Achilles) broken links?

IMO this is catastrophic news. I am very sad. :'( On the bright side I will probably post less.

I have a feeling the absence of the modify button will end up annoying considerably more people than were being annoyed by its presence :).

I have found that I post more because of the required extra posts to correct typos that completely change the meaning of what I have tried to say. A modify button is hardly the only benefit to members, besides it is only in EFCB.

I would not call this the bright side. My typpoes shall live on infamy! :D

On the real bright side: POSTCOUNT! :P

No, no, no!
Bring it back! No, really! I'll give you my daughter's hand in marriage. If I have one that is.

Really why don't we just ask people not to add new thoughts by editing? Or add a field "reasons for editing"?
I make one hell of typos and not being able to correct them is a pain in... you know where, don't you?

No. I have disgraphy (if that's a proper English terms) and sometimes I don't see mistakes however long I look (I always read what I wrote) and only later when something "clicks" in my brain I'm able to notice them...

I would think the reverse would be true.

A modify button is hardly the only benefit to members...

Well there are pms and not having to give your e-mail or a purported e-mail address everytime you post. I would rather give up pms than the modify button. Strangely I receive few pms.  ???  :(  Membership is not required for posting.

The facility to modify posts has been removed from Ensign First Class Blather, it is difficult to have a proper argument if someone is editing a post that your a replying to.

I would think that you could quote the pertinent point which you are responding to in your own post thus negating the poster's ability to clarify, back away from their argument, or even obliterate their post which may have been tactless or inept.

...besides it is only in EFCB.

Which is where I predominantly post. Oh. This is directed at me isn't?  :-[

That is very true. Just because some people don't understand that highlighting substantial changes in previous posts is what should be done for many reasons, doesn't mean that this is denied to those who use it within its intended uses. Sadly many of my typos are cited and thus enshrined so quickly that by the time I sobered up and rephrased my statement, they were already history. I regard the malpractise to post in a thread a couple of times immediatey following up ones own post is quite disruptive and irritating for anyone to read.

It is much better to have one concise statement and rectify misunderstandings on the spot than to drag on forever explaining what that post meant.

As frustrating as it is to be trying to argue against a post which is slowly edited beyond all recognition, I think removing editing completely is somewhat drastic. If there's sufficient support, I'm prepared to trial a new subscription service whereby you guys PM me and I correct your typos for you. There'll also be a premium service where I remove the bits of the posts that I don't agree with.

Oh, and let me edit this for no reason.

The vastly superior world in which people may change their arguments five times every hour after being responded to by four other people has been restored.

As Jester said maybe it was not the way to do it, let's stop discussing with people who do that instead of being "totalitarian" and taking away the means... (sorry for draging this further the amount of irony on JC's part made me :P)

So now if someone does do the argument editing tactic, I hope everyone else who wanted the modify button back so desperately does their part in mocking and scorning that individual.  It's the only way they'll learn.

I can't speak for the rest, but sure, I'd do it anyway, that's very unfair, no doubts here.

Of course I will alter this statement tomorrow and deny any knowledge of it after page 3.

With this forum software (or at least, the settings PPG uses), there's a certain amount of time you can edit your post in without the message appearing.  Elsewhere, you may notice such a message always appearing, or the message never appearing while your post is the last in the thread (AFAIK the former is the Invision Power Board default, while the latter is the phpBB default).

Thank you very much for returning editing to us. I like a responsive government. Let's just have a Pubic Register of Shame - and that person induging in this pathetic behaviour can be humiliated for a week or two. That will be both edifying for him and fun for us.

Impressive, isn't it? I live in an alleged democracy and there's no way the Prime Minister would listen to me. This is why people like cyberspace better than RL.

BR, for you that's a party, not someone's punishment.

Or an 80% opposition to a proposed legislation...I hate our government and want to stab it till it dies.

Here in Australia it used to be the people who felt threatened by immigrants/refugees and resented their presence were people of extremely narrow views and experience. They were a fringe group, and they did not impact on the humanitarian policies of our government.
Today, we lock up refugees in prisons, for fear they may be trying to pull a swifty. We were keeping people in prisons, who have committed no crime. That's including children.
Our government tried to introduce a law allowing police officers to shoot whomever they fancied, and that would be OK.
Law denying workers rights to bargain effectively are being introduced - taking us back to pre-19th century workplace bargaining.

That's fascism - and I find myself unable to laugh.  :'(

Thankfully we also exported that crap to Latin America and the US. So they share some of the burden of keeping this planet white.
