Title: Banter Packs not working?
Post by: Mageofthesands on April 06, 2004, 06:39:36 PM
I installed the Banter Packs v.3 while playing. I have since completed SoA, and didn't notice any new banters. If anything, there were less. And is there any new for ToB?  I started a new ToB game, added Valygar and Jan to my party, and used SetCurrentXP to max, and no new inventions.  Might it be conflicting with UB?

Did you install it while the game or Shadow Keeper was running? If so, then it won't install properly. And yes, there is ToB material.

UB shouldn't effect it, though your really better off asking Icelus.

- The Jan inventions come up in SOA only, currently.

- Yes, there are definitely new banters and yes they definitely work. You might try installing the banter accelerator component and/or whacking CTRL+I a few times every so often to encourage the banter engine to work faster.

- Yes, there are new TOB banters, although not as many as SOA. More TOB banters coming in the next release.

Looking back, and running set up again, it has come to my attention that I didn't actually install the SoA part of the pack.  Oops.  My bad.  I was sure that I did.

Sorry to hear that. There's always next time... or CTRL+I. :)

Yeah, thanks.  I'm still wondering why weidu nows autoupdates and stuff.  I got a message that I may or may not have installed the accelarator.  I think that may have undone the install.  Or something.

The autoupdate helps avoid problems that could and did crop up where one version of WeiDU was used to try to do an uninstall/reinstall of another mod in the stack, but because the mod used a newer command, the reinstall would fail.

Really?  Well, I'm sending you the debug file, as per the orders of the Great Weidu Window.

The #1 problem with banter pack installs happen when people select the SOA banter accelerator when it's already installed in Kelsey-SOA. Try answering No to that element.

I believe Camdawg has included the ability to detect if a certain mod component is already installed from another mod, with his fix pack, and possibly some of his other works.  It might be worthwhile to include such a check so the option is automatically skipped over if it is already present.

I'll look at how he does it. I do it with FORBID_FILE but perhaps there are more subtle ways of doing it these days.

CamDawg uses the same way you do, with dummy files, yeh.

Yep, I just checked an the already installed components are not auto skipped.  If it is possible, it could save some headaches if the components that are already installed are autoskipped.

That would probably require Weimeric Intervention(tm).

Gee, I might make that a feature request if I wasn't banned from Studios, where the WeiDU forums are currently hosted.

What, exactly, does Control-I do?

As near as I can tell, CTRL+I goes to look at the INTERDIA.2DA list (which lists out everybody's banter DLG, BANOMEN, BAERIE, etc.) and tells one or all of them to attempt to start dialogue. I suspect that it is either a random or sequential selection, but I've never really rigidly tested it, because it's been good enough for me to know that CTRL+I = stimulated banter.

(It also spews out resource names on the game screen, but you don't need to worry about that, it's just a side-effect.)

No banters of any kind are showing up after installing v4.  Uninstalled and reinstalled v3, they are all back.  I have a full SoA and ToB installed along with all the latest patches.  And no SK, the game, etc was not running during installation.  Any ideas why v4 would not work?

Re-check to see you really installed it. Alot of people think they did, but when they check they realize that they really didn't.

Or reinstall, that helps sometimes :)

Yes, it was installed.  Tried reinstalling before going thru the uninstall and reinstall of v3.  Reinstalling v4 made no difference.  Any other ideas?

What, exactly, did you do to verify that you weren't getting banters? And if you have V4 installed, please post up your weidu.log file in its entirety.

What, exactly, did you do to verify that you weren't getting banters?

I was guessing you had not removed any of the v3 banters to begin with and none of those were showing up in the game like they normally do.  Example:  Minsc asking Aerie to make sure Yoshimo was not cheating while playing the game.  This one normally shows up pretty quickly once all three are in the party.  I completed over half of the quests and the only dialog windows that appeared were LTs from the romances.

And if you have V4 installed, please post up your weidu.log file in its entirety.

I'll have to write it to CD to transfer it to this computer, but I will do that and post it for you.  I checked the log and the banterpacks was listed there.

But had you already seen that banter in your saved game? The variable that indicates that the banter has run would still be present in the saved game, so you wouldn't see it again.

But had you already seen that banter in your saved game?

That's just it I had not seen any of them with v4 installed - not one showed up.  After unistalling v4 and installing v3 I got 2 of Jan's back to back right after reloading the game.  The one mentioned above didn't show up at all.  Here's the logs:

(Original installation order)  This is a copy of the log before I did anything.  It's from another game folder but it's the same installation.  The only difference being this one is Banter Packs v3, (FW) Kelsey SoA & ToB, and Improved Oasis II v3.  This game had no glitches and all other items installed are the latest versions.  Also have this installation order in another game folder with another beta mod I'm testing and have had no issues with it either.

This is the log after reinstalling v4, then uninstalling v4 and installing v3.  This game had Improved Oasis II v5, (FW) Kelsey SoA, (PPG) Kelsey ToB.  Beta testing I write down exactly what is installed and the order of installation.  So after downloading the Banter Packs v4, Kelsey ToB and Improved Oasis II v5 from the new site, I installed them in the same order in a new game so not to mess up the other if anything went wrong.

If you think it could just be a corrupted download, I'll download the files again and try in a new game.

No, it's exceedingly unlikely that a corrupt download would extract and install yet not function.

You say you can't get the Minsc/Aerie/Yoshimo rock/paper/scissors to show up. Do you know how to decompile BMINSC to .d and send it to me, after installing Banter V4?

I installed the SoA portions, the ToB portions and the accelerator. Its not working.CTRL+I doesnt work either,i DID get SOME dialogs, but those were the original ones.It will run through a list of filenames when i keep pressing CTRL+I,and SOMETIMES,one of my characters will face one of my other characters all of a sudden,as if they are preparing to initiate a conversation...but none occur.

All im getting is the original banthers that almost never happen and the scripted comments(Such as Jaheira telling Rylock shes a harper).Ive played for AGES(Real time) doing nothing but sitting there waiting for Jaheira to finish the romance dialogs, and the banthers didnt trigger.

Do you have the party combinations listed in the FAQ? Will you post up your weidu.log file so we can confirm that you actually have it installed? Have you installed any large-overwriting mods since installing the banter pack that would overwrite the banter pack changes? Have you re-run Setup-Banter.exe to reinstall the mod?
