As I'm a complete novice at this can anyone help me out. I've downloaded the patches needed for BG/TOTSC and BG2/SOA. When I try to apply them I get a pop up message saying that the installed game isn't found. Can someone give me a step by step guide on how to apply them as I don't really know what I'm doing - I only know that I enjoy these games, have played them several times and would like to get the most out of them. I'm hoping to install the tutu and also some mods as well. Thanks in advance.

I'm assuming you're referring to the official Bioware patches...
If so, make sure that you're installing the correct patch.
Do you have the version of BG1 that contains both the original game and the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion (entitled The Original Saga)? If so, you do not need a patch. Also, make sure that if you've only installed Shadows of Amn (and not Throne of Bhaal) that you've downloaded the correct patch. The Throne of Bhaal patch will not work with Shadows of Amn alone.

Hiya, yep they are biowares patches, I've got the 6 disc totsc which automatically installs with bg1, I don't have tob yet. I downloaded the patches to the same files that the games are saved in but when I go to open and install the patches that message (you don't have a game installed) pops up. Do the patches automatically run when you play the game or do you have to do something with them first? I'm sorry if this sounds really basic but I'm totally in the dark about this stuff - thanks.

From your post on another forum (was it PBG), I think your problem has to do with the games being installed on your secondary harddrive, not your C: drive. Is that the case? Could that affect patch install, I don't know, but it's information that could help someone else answer.

IIRC, the patches can be manually unpacked with WinZip or WinRar. Not a perfect solution, but an option nonetheless.

My winzip wizard says that it isn't an archive it recognises - even the classic dosen't unpack it. It allows me to view the individual files in the patch but thats all it will let me do. The game is installed in my d:/ directory and the patch is saved to the override folder in the game - hope this helps to shed some light on where I'm going wrong - thanks.

The patches can be unpacked with WinRAR, but this won't help you since you still won't be able to install it. The patch shouldn't be saved in your override folder, although I doubt it will do any harm there it is still best to save it somewhere else. It doesn't actually matter where you save the patches since they search the registry to find the game. Evidently the patch's installer isn't finding the game in the registry. So...
- If you have Tales of the Sword Coast installed you only need the TotSC patch (version 1.3.5512) you do not need the straight BG patch as well.
- Are you using the right language patch? For BG1 there are separate US and UK versions for BG2 there is just the english version. (I haven't looked into patches for other language versions).
- Gah... I'm out of ideas for now.

I've double checked and the patches are correct for the game versions I have - I've also found out that the patches aren't zip files - they're exe files - I would assume they could be self extracting and you only notice the difference once you are playing the game - other than that i'm out of ideas too......

Yes they are self-extracting, the BG patch I think asks you to creat a temporary folder where you unpack the files from the patch and then you run Setup.exe or something like this and define the path to the directory to where BG is installed (i.e C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Baldur's Gate). As for the other patches I believe you simply double-click them, and they install properly (they might ask you to set the correct directory where BG or BG II is installed but of this I'm not sure).
Anywayz if this is not working then unfortunately I too am out of ideas, one last thing that might be worth a shot would be to uninstall both games and do a clean install, and then try the patches.
If might also help if you tell us what operating system your computer is using and where your BG games are installed (i.e C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Baldur's Gate)

Hiya - I'm running XP pro on Athlon 2800+ cpu on a gigabite mb. Haven't done the setup.exe thing - DOH! The games are saved to D:\ - I'll give the uninstall/intall a go and I'll delete the patches and re-download them and i'll try my C:\ directory instead. Fingers crossed hehe.
