This reminds me that BioWare intended to have him find the body of Entar Silvershield's son although I do not know what the consequences of that would be. It also reminds that there is nothing that tells the player where to search, you have to metagame or run around randomly. Perhaps there should be some sort of hint at where to look.

Yep, mcruz has the right zone.  The ruined caravan should be located in the south east region of the map (to the east of the road).

I think it is one of the areas south of Beregost but north of Nashkel - can't recall the exact area code though.
