Sometimes, yeah. Namely, ToB version of the engine has certain features that are different from SoA (like mirror image animation, the presence of HLA), and I am not sure if it can be changed back to the SoA version

I mostly mean being able/unable to install SoA without ToB. Or is it possible when you buy it from gog.com?

No, ToB is not optional. Is that a problem?

It surprises me too, now that I've checked it out. Thanks for the info, Echon
Still, will it be available forever? And besides, by what I understood you can buy there full games but not the original ones (i.e without TotSC/ToB/HoW)

Their games are all DRM free, so even if GOG.com folds in a couple of years you can still play your games. No, you cannoy buy the games without expansions but why would you want to?

An address and program that actually runs the ISO. It is not a physical drive like your CD or DVD drives.

And what's this Virtual Drive, then?

"What's this ISO image of the disk and how do I make it?"
The ISO "image" is the file that contains whatever is found on your CD. It is run from a Virtual Drive.
VirtualCD is one approach but I strike trouble with getting it to actually make the ISOs.
I normally use Daemon Tools Lite. It is freeware and handles both the creation of the ISO and mounting it into a virtual drive.

For my opening question, -- if anyone is still interested, -- dumping BG1 5 CD's on DVD works perfectly for both installing and playing
As for TotSC, I copied this disk to the root directory (on another DVD) and 5 first CD's to one subdirectory. Now I can install the game using this (2nd) DVD but can't play it (it insists on seeing disk 1) so I have to use the first DVD. It seems to me, I should have copied some file from disk 1 to the root directory, but I didn't know which

It surprises me that noone has mentioned that you can simply buy the games from gog.com and stop worrying about physical media for digital games.

It surprises me that this hasn't been explained in this section of the forums (and pinned)

Just drag and drop the content of your CDs to folders on your hard drive and then burn that to DVD using whatever software you have [...]
I did it with BG1 CD's (without TotSC) and it works perfectly. Must be OK for SoA without ToB and IWD without HoW. But for games with add-ons it must be done differently (TotSC/ToB/HoW is to be copied to the root directory, and the original CD's to a subdirectory. That's what I understood from the discussion at SHS, -- the link to it was given by Azazello a few posts above)

I just do a full install. I just make an ISO image of the disk I must keep in my CD drive, then I mount it in a virtual drive.
That way my CD drive is not monopolized by a disk I am not really using.
What's this ISO image of the disk and how do I make it?

Just drag and drop the content of your CDs to folders on your hard drive and then burn that to DVD using whatever software you have (Windows Media Player even). If you have two CD/DVD drives, you can skip the hard drive step, though it's usually wise anyway since hard drives have quicker speeds than optical disks. Edit: Since you are copying multiple disks to one disk (presumably), you will need to copy to the hard drive first anyway.

Thanks for the link; yet I can't say I am satisfied
Firstly, they only discuss the matter considering BG1 WITH TotSC and SoA WITH ToB, never WITHOUT
Secondly, I would also like to back up IWD1 discs in the same manner (both WITH and WITHOUT HoW), and even IWD2 if possible (though of the latter I care far less)
And lastly, I do not want to read the discussion consisting of 30 or 40 posts, which is what they have there. I just want to see a plain explanation, kinda 'do this and that, and never do that, period'
Thanks for the link anyway, though

So, how shall I copy original discs to make DVD's that can be used to install and play games? (BG1 with and without TotSC; BG2 with and without ToB; IWD1 with and without HoW)

There's a thread over on SHS that discusses this: Single DVD Full Install for BG2 which I think also covers BG1.
