That's why you get the turn-and-face, etc. One of the side effects of running the animation sequence is that you get banters, but it's kind of a bonus feature, not necessarily the intended event. You might even spam CTRL-I for several minutes straight and not get a banter, and then round a corner or whatever and get one that could have run before.
You won't be able to use CTRL-I to get banters when you're playing in multi-player mode, only in single-player. Just so you know. Also, since you're running what's pretty much an animation debugger, you can increase your chances of getting a particular NPC's banters by selecting only that NPC rather than the whole party.
