For the best playthrough it's best to create your own multiplayer game (just pick serial as your protocol) and create 6 of your own players

Remember always make your protagonist a "tank" due to fact if Player1 dies... It's gameover!

Now that I think of it, I couldn't agree with you more, Six. I used Dan Simpsons excellent walkthrough on occasions during my first run of BGII, and in retrospect, I regret not taking the only chance to discover the game for myself.

EDIT: great site BTW, Six!

This is the part where I jump in and advise you not to read any walkthroughs at all, at least not until you've beaten the game at least once. This is the ONLY chance you will ever have to actually play the game for yourself: All future runs will be colored, for better or for worse, by your own experience and the opinions of others. If you beat the game relying on someone's advice, who was it who actually beat the game--you or them?

As this is a role-playing game, you might consider roleplaying: Recruit party members as you come across them, provided that their personalities mesh with the group and their skill-set seems likely to come in handy. Put your proficiency points in, say, Long Sword, if you so happen to find a Long Sword worth investing in. Etc.

Just in case you wish to avoid spoilers, Volothamp's Comeuppance will tell you everything that you need to know.

For a fighter, max out the longsword first. Grandmastery (5 stars) will let you smack down anything in your way.

You might suffer a bit from not having a thief also. Imoen will eventually get her thief levels back, but that might not be worth much if you dualed her early. There are some things in the game you can generally get only by thievery, or by taking a rep loss in some cases. Personally I like having 2 of them - one to specialise in locks and the other for pickpocketing and other stuff. If you put them in the back ranks with bows or crossbows, they make decent archers too, wihch come in handy.

See Dan Simpson's walkthrough for more party advice.

In my experience, a healer will come in useful in the more difficult areas. They're not neccesary as such, as healing potions can be used to replace them.

Yeah, im good/neutral.

Whats the point of the healer? Right now ive just fight and then rest. Are there big dungeons later where you cant rest and need a healer? Also, healer can just use a few spells so whats the point?

Many options possible, depending on your style and alignment. I'm going to assume good/neutral alignment, and suggest characters that are available relatively early, so you won't have to change things around in chapter V.

PC
Imoen
Khalid (fighter, Friendly Arm Inn)
Jaheira (fighter/druid, Friendly Arm Inn)
Minsc (ranger, Nashkel)
Dynaheir (mage, Gnoll Stronghold)

Given events in BGII, this seems to be the party you are "meant" to use. A disadvantage is a lack of healing power. An alternative to Khalid and Jaheira is Ajantis (paladin, area north of Friendly Arm) or Kivan (ranger, High Hedge) with Branwen (cleric, Nashkel Carnaval, bring a Stone to Flesh scroll).
