Why didn't you say you were using Ding0berries right off the bat? Clearly, that is the problem.
I've looked at that list, and I am familiar with most of those mods. However, I am not familiar with Bone Hill. I took a glance at it, and it appears to be a large and complex mod. Further, I found this in its readme:
I am interested in whether you can replicate your ankheg craziness without Bone Hill installed. I wouldn't recommend that you mess with your mod list right now, seeing as you've got a game in progress. But perhaps some testing after you've finished?
Not first visit, first time going to that area, first visit was to get Ajantis, was L1-L2 at the time, later came back for farmer Brun's stuff, then went there on the way to BG.

Several areas has some of the BP "hardness" code added to it, so if you are a higher level character and/or playing at above Easy, you will get more enemies. In theory, this code should work with both the BGT version and the Tutu version.
