But if the roles were reversed, and the PC was the one acting pompous and condescending, he'd still get a Virtue hit for choosing conversation responses in a way that couldn't be termed as anything but deliberately picking a fight.
To paraphrase an old saying, whether the Dragon hits the Paladin or the Paladin hits the Dragon, it's going to be bad for the Paladin.

....should reputation changes be reserved for more severe situations, such as trying to deceive Sarles with the fake illithium (which would doubtless earn the party a reputation as liars and cheats)?Given that it's possible to come right out and say that "I was unable to get pure illithium, this alloy was the best I could do" (although this option should be removed if the PC has pursued the real deal as far as Unger), calling the party cheats and liars is unfair. Not that that will matter to Sarles and the Jysstevs, they'll still see fit to tread your good(?) name through all the mud they can find.
As for your real question, though, Rep influences such as Orianna should probably only have an affect if your Rep is already in the 8-12 range. Anything more extreme than that won't be swayed by a high-class hooker, no matter how many cottages she has.
